  1. Cesar Izturis is leading off for the Cardinals today. Cesar's line this year: .239 .309 .293
  2. I was just thinking... Ryan Luckwick 2008 = Richard Hidalgo 2000? Luckwick 08 - .307 .384 .623 Hidalgo 00 - .314 .391 .636 Luckwick career minor league line - .270 .345 .501 Hidalgo career minor league line - .282 .324 .440 Pretty big different in minor league OPS, but both showed great explosions in unexpected seasons. Of course Hidalgo played during a time where a lot of suspicious activity was happening. Either way, Hidalgo could never quite get back to that form after 2000, although he did have a pretty good 2003 (.309 .385 .572)
  3. Yes. This. If we had a good O-Line, a solid proven RB, and at least one dependable WR, it makes sense to try the high risk guy. If you're the Bears, and you have none of these things but a good defense and presumably a good special teams, it makes a lot of sense to use the low risk guy. Actually, if you have a good line and solid running game then a safer QB is probably good enough to take you a long way. A team that is all defense and special teams, then if you have any hope of going far, you are going to need a QB who can make some plays. I see your point, but I'd still really have the safer QB with a really good defense. If the defense plays like it did in 2005, I don't want a QB that will throw a lot of INTs that leads to extra drives for the defense and eventually wears them out. Also I don't want a QB who is going to throw an INT in the red zone right after the D makes a big play to get a turnover.
  4. I honestly think the HR Derby seems like one of those things that you think is going to be cooler than it actually is.

  6. Colvin's OPS is over .700 now! (.701)
  7. Just for fun, I went to Yankees.com the Sunday before the Home Run Derby and was able to pull up individual tickets to the HR Derby. They were like $350 though.
  8. I'm glad that Soriano is getting hot in August. Hypothetically, this means that he will go cold in September (and hope that it doesn't matter) and then go on fire again in October instead of going ice cold like last year.
  9. Why would you say that? Kerry Wood has no say in the new owner and neither do the players. They should be careful what they wish for if they enjoy having their clubhouse to themselves. JMHO based on past observations. Just asking...but if Cuban wasn't involved, would most fans really care that much who has the winning bid to purchase the Cubs? I think not. I think its just a good sign that not only is he the highest bidder thus fan (and of course that can change), but he is actively attending Cub charity events in Chicago.
  10. Guys, can you get the spelling of his last name correct? It's Luckwick
  11. Still, fantastic performance.
  12. Karstens now has 2 more hits (2) than he's allowed today (0)
  13. Really weird to see 15 runs scored in the first 4 innings and then 0 the next 4 1/2
  14. Only 15 hits for Ward this year. 15-66
  15. We'll definitely re-sign him next year, probably try the platoon with Pie out again. He may not be Carlos Quentin or Josh Hamilton, but he was one hell of a pick up off the trash heap. He's maintaining his solid numbers against lefties, and that's good enough for me. I'd rather Fukudome gets moved to center for a platoon so that a big bat can be added as a corner OFer to slide into the #3 slot and Lee hits #2 or #5. It all depends on whats available and how much Mr. Cuban wants to spend. Personally, Id like the put all our free agency eggs in 1 basket this offseason and go after K-Rod, however, I dont think the Angels will let him go. He'll get a record shattering contract for a reliever for sure. That is seriously way beyond the last thing we should even consider doing. Yeah that's an awful idea. Why the hell would be do that?
  16. I'm so glad that Dusty isn't the manager of the Cubs. If that were the case, Reed would have already gone Todd Hollandsworth on us and won the CF job against righties and lefties.
  17. Wow that makes me feel a crapload better about last Friday.
  18. We should win the series quite easily. Carp looked good in his last start, but he's still not pitching that many pitches in a game and we can definitely get to the Cards bullpen. On paper, we should win the first 2 games quite easily. I think even if Carp is throwing well we can take enough pitches like we have in the past to get him out of there early. He can't be on a pitch count of more than 80 at this point so if we can get to the bullpen before the 5th, we're good.
  19. So...looking ahead to this weekend Friday: Looper vs. Lilly Saturday: Wellemeyer vs. Zambrano Sunday: Carpenter vs. Dempster Thoughts?
  20. 89. Last time they were 25 games over was 1984 I believe.
  21. how many people really stuck with that team? i remember game threads that were 2 or 3 pages long, mostly fred doing play by play for himself. they were a complete waste of time to follow (except on rich hill days). There were a few of us. Sometimes Fred's PBP was uninterrupted for entire pages, but we were there. Even if you didn't post obsessively in game threads doesn't mean you didn't follow the team on a day to day basis. Sure if just about anything came up, I would not watch the game and check the box later, but if I was home it was still always on. I was at work listening to the O'Malley game on the radio. The night before I managed to stay up until 12:45 to watch that 17 inning game (or whatever it was). We swept that series IIRC.
  22. What's the question and who is Ryan O'Malley? Favorite Cubs vs. Astros moment Woods 20 k game Sammys 66th HR a comeback from 9-0 in 1989 Ryan O'Malleys debut I forget the 5th option. The 5th one was "Cubs pitcher retires Carlos Lee (Hypothetical)"
  23. What's the question and who is Ryan O'Malley? Not a true Cubs' fan. Go sit in the corner. Anyone who stuck with the team until the bitter end in 2006 knows the name of one of the bright spots that year, Ryan O'Malley
  24. Anyone realize that Backe gave up more ERs than outs today?
