What do you need another pitcher for? If Lackey isn't #3, why is he even being pursued? As a #4 if you aren't sold on Hendricks/Hammel/Internal options. At least that's how I look at Lackey. If the Cubs are really in a "2 year window" as Kaplan said the Cubs are viewing this, I don't see them signing Lackey to be the 3rd starter, I see them as signing Lackey AND a 3rd starter. But who knows, maybe they do ride with that and re-evaluate the rotation at the deadline.

Hmm, not sure that's a position you want to mess around with defensively with Schwarber and Soler at the corners..but it might work and he might take to it well. Maybe thats why we keep hearing the Cubs pursuing corner OFs like Gordon and Heyward while also hearing talk of trading Soler

Hah, I looked it up last night and Kane is on pace for 127 points this year, which would be the most any player has scored since 1996. Boggles my mind that a player could get 26 more points in 30 less games.

Apparently Bruce Levine said on the radio this morning that the Cubs want to have a free agent signed before the meetings start on Sunday. They better hurry up then! PTR has his penny jar dumped out on the table and is counting them up as we speak.

I almost want the Cubs to do anything noteworthy, even if its a move I don't approve of, just for the sake of discussion. Can't wait for the Winter Meetings to get here.

Yeah his style might be ok, but I cannot see him being a particularly effective recruiter (unless the system has immediate results and is attractive to recruits), or a leader of men given what we heard from the Bears locker room at the end of last season. Yes pros have a different mindset than college players but I mean how can you respect a coach that stood by as one of his players berated an assistant in front of everyone, and then the next day named him a captain?

Just in general they need more out of their bigs. They are killed down there by any team with size. That said, Beilein has found ways around lack of quality bigs in the past.

Didn't even make it to the Winter Meetings. Surprising. -
I bet its because Washington is in a playoff spot and leading a division and Chicago is not. I don't think they put enough thought into the rankings overall.

They don't have one in 2016. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2015/07/2016-competitive-balance-draft-results.html yeah but not because they don't qualify for one, just that they lost the lottery. Don't worry though, every other team in our division will get one next year. I'll gladly trade a competitive balance pick every year for the right to play in the Chicago market. Me too...its a unique situation that has put the Cardinals payroll higher than us the last 4 years (I believe)...it shouldn't continue like that very long, but I think it also shows that they don't exactly need an extra draft pick to maintain competitive balance.

I think Hammel would be an effective swingman...I would be fine using him in that role.
