  1. Once they came up with a deadline of sorts on the 28th, there very clearly wasn't going to be a deal a minute sooner. But I really did think they'd be in a place by now to get something done on the 28th. I still naively think it's possible but this is a big bummer
  2. So based on the reports it certainly doesn't seem like a "great" offer or whatever horsefeathering Manfred said. I feel like owners aren't going to budge any more on the CBT thresholds themselves but I'm really hoping there's wiggle room with the penalties.
  3. I'm surprised there wasn't a review for a fumble there at the end when Romo thought Reid was arguing about formation
  4. Kaplan has said on his Cubs-whatever-it's-called podcast with Wittenmeyer a couple times recently that the Cubs were seriously involved with Corey Seager. Another sign they're not completely sitting out the top SS market. Obviously though he didn't sign here for a reason and could also be another signal that years is going to be a holdup. Also, I know it's generally assumed by writers/sites/internet places that Correa was the #1 FA at the start of the off-season but I wouldn't be surprised if the actual "industry" or whatever values Seager a little more given he's a better and left handed hitter, and the Astros cheating stuff. I'd mention Correa's apparent back concerns but Seager has had his share of injuries as well. No doubt, in Correa's favor, there's a defensive gap. Either way, I have some doubts the top bidder will be over $325 million, let alone the $350 million territory.
  5. I don't have an Athletic subscription but that Mooney headline going around seems like he might be hearing different things than he was a few weeks ago. He was pretty adamant there'd be no long term deals.
  6. I'll guess 4 years with still the same or similar total value as Gausman and Ray. And I could see them ending up with Story on a similar 4 year, really high aav deal. Even if you have concerns about his non Coors offense(which might be overblown anyway), that glove would be super valuable right now. I can't quite get myself to think Correa is realistic but I'm also struggling to see many fits for him..
  7. I could see Jed targeting both Gray and Rodon. I think we're in a position as good as anyone to take a risk on Rodon and to offer a short deal (like 1 or 2 years) at a really high AAV. I can't imagine teams will line up w long term offers and we (theoretically) have a lot of payroll room.
  8. With the number of scouts PTR laid off during and after Covid, I wonder if the Suzuki posting is something they were even the slightest bit prepared for or if they're going to have to trust Baseball America articles like us. Hopefully they are able to do their homework these next few weeks because he seems like a great fit.
  9. Given the influx of low minors talent the Cubs brought in over the past year, I could see them willing to sign a QO free agent. As you said, I could also see them reserving it for a top level talent (Correa, Seager, Semien, or maybe Rodon if you trust his health ((and I think they showed interest last offseason)). I think there's virtually no chance they sign Story, Taylor, Conforto, etc for this reason. There is still some good talent out there without that QO attached like all of the recent former Cubs and Stroman and Gausman. Though of course every other team will be thinking that too.
  10. Yeah Sahadev has been pretty adamant on the Onto Waveland podcast too that there will be no long term, $100 million deals. But then they always talk about how much money is available. It seems like there will be at least one long term deal in there, even if it's someone like Castillanos who might get 9 figures but still quite a bit less than the top shortstops and pitchers. Going the extreme volume route doesn't really make sense with 40 man considerations.
  11. horsefeathers it, I'm buying in, he's our Muncy.
  12. I hope he keeps up this prime Albert Pujols impression into 2022
  13. Looks like Brennen might be running out of gas here at the end which is understandable. There's a whole lot of strikeouts without much production lately.
  14. I wonder if the volume of prospects brought in at the deadline makes the Cubs more likely to sign multiple free agents who received qualifying offers, like a SS/Castellanos and a pitcher. If they stick with just one, that makes some of these combinations a little more difficult and would likely include at least one reunion. And, personally, I could do without re-signing Javy.
  15. I really want Seager. He won't be a SS for some of the contract but I don't care. Without any actual data to back it up, I think he would have a Castellanos-ian jump in dongs going from a pitchers park to Wrigley. And the K rate well under 20%.
  16. Will be fascinated to watch Steele start. If he (or Thompson for that matter, though it feels like there's more upside w Steele) look like a good Major League starter, the path to contention next year becomes a lot easier for me to envision.
  17. I do expect a competitive team next year and I suspect Wisdom will be penciled in as the starter at either 3B or 1B entering the season. And I think I'm ok with it.
  18. I do like adding Madrigal's bat to the lineup, though I don't know if I love locking into a Hoerner/Madrigal middle infield w the SS free agent class as strong as it is, plus Nico might be the best defensive second baseman in baseball. Does Madrigal have the arm for 3B?
  19. Isn't it a little surprising how often Davis has been playing a corner outfield spot? In RF again tonight
  20. Anthony might want to sign that 5/70 quick
  21. Man what a dud of a season. After such a fun May too. Wrap Kimbrel in a bubble, don't even think about pitching him in back to back games
  22. what do we do with Rizzo and do we still want to extend a sub .800 ops, anti vaxx first baseman with a horrible back
  23. It has to be awkward the next inning when the catcher strikes out looking and argues like that.
  24. Get your head in the game, ump. horsefeathers.
  25. Can't afford to force Davies to get extra outs against this lineup. That 2-2 pitch to Muncy hit the zone, the spot, and was received well. Zero excuse to miss that one
