Bit my tongue clear off here. Whether a school is willfully ignorant while a student is enrolled at the school, or willfully ignorant in order to get him enrolled at the school, it really doesn't matter. This wasn't Rose taking the test once, not getting his scores, realizing he needs to get his act together to be eligible and that's it. This was Rose failing to reach the scores 3 times. This was Rose then travelling to Detroit(home of friend of the program worldwide wes) to take the SAT. You don't think Calipari knew exactly what was going on? He just thought Derrick would be more comfortable taking the test in Detroit? Away from all the pressure of Chicago? He just thought Derrick flipped the switch the 4th time around, and took the test seriously? You think Memphis's compliance department saw this as standard operating procedure? Detroit's where most kids go to get a boost in their scores? With Calipari's history, Memphis held their nose and said let's go for it. It bit them in the ass and now they're pleading ignorance. If they weren't willfully ignorant, then they were accidentally stupid.

I kinda agree with this. I really don't get the difference between this and the Darrell Arthur spot. Did the NCAA prove Memphis knew about the SAT? Cause in both cases it seems like the NCAA Clearinghouse approved the kids? I'm not going to act like Cal was running a completely clean program because that's likely not the case. But this whole Rose thing is pretty ridiculous. I don't know what else Memphis or any program is supposed to do. The guy was cleared by the NCAA clearinghouse. Are programs now supposed to dig deeper to clear players on their own? What's UMass supposed to do? The NCAA cleared Marcus Camby to play even though he was getting paid! What are they supposed to do, stop their players from getting paid on their own? What's Michigan supposed to do? The NCAA cleared Chris Webber to play even though he was getting paid!! What are they supposed to do stop their players from getting paid on their own? What's Georgia supposed to do? The NCAA allowed the kids to take those fake classes and be eligible! What are they supposed to do make their players take real classes on their own? What's Washington football supposed to do? The NCAA allowed Jeramy Stevens to play even though he raped that girl! What are they supposed to do stop their players from raping girls on their own??

hahahahahahaha Please tell me you're joking. Yes, I was. There always should be sport where 60 kids do stand around for and scratch their crotch while 11 play. I'll give basketball its kudos it is good for getting HJ, LJ and Trpl J in shape. The rest I am dead serious, especially number 3 i always preferred BJ's to HJ's, but i'm intrigued by this LJ business. edit: holy [expletive] beaten. I was this close to making this post today. My family would have been so disgraced.

you know what's even crazier? i saw him pitch in a [expletive] minor league game while on the DL for a bad back. A MINOR LEAGUE GAME! GET YOUR HEAD ON STRAIGHT, ZAMBRANO. Too lazy to pitch in the majors.

In his contract year,probably a coincidence. He was on a terrible Nationals team so pitching to him wasn't that damaging. He had 46 HR and only 96 RBI. That makes no sense. If he's on a terrible team, you wouldn't want to ever pitch to him. You do if you're up 7-0 every game. I would imagine a lot of those HRs came in garbage time. Nope. -

So as of last year the Cubs had supposedly one of the worst farm systems in baseball but now they are in jeopardy of a lot of their players getting picked in the rule 5 draft? Seems to me that people here may be way overestimating the amount of value other teams will put on these mid level prospects. It's not that people expect 6 guys to get taken, just that there are a lot of guys who have a chance at being drafted. Veal got drafted this past year and the system was in much worse shape than it is now. -

Memphis is high profile? If Calipari stayed and he had his army of paid 18 year olds there instead of Lexington, the NCAA would've found no wrong-doing. With Calipari gone and Memphis's program an afterthought they were able to actually do something(however pointless it may be) You don't know what you are talking about. Well you're certainly an unbiased source.

What do they have to do with Memphis? There's just as many examples of schools losing high profile coaches and still maintaining elite levels. There a lot of examples of [expletive] conference schools losing high profile coaches and not missing a beat? The Self to Weber transition was pretty seamless--and then Weber started getting talent commensurate with the rest of the conference. Memphis isn't Illinois and C-USA isn't the Big Ten.

I would have agreed if it weren't for their Fed Ex connection which has helped deliver a ton of money and great facilities. I think Pastner will keep them about as relevant as Gonzaga. They'll fly around to play tough teams in the non-conference, clean up in conference and have a handful of Sweet 16's. The question is how much of Memphis's success was their facilities and how much was their skirting of the rules. There's no big name coach to save them anymore, Memphis continues what they've been doing they're fucked.

The only thing similar about UMass and Memphis is the coach who left. Memphis had success well before Cal arrived. I never said we wouldn't miss a beat without Cal, sure this next season is going to be challenging but there's a lot of talent still on the team. And like I mentioned, the major recruits still have Memphis on their list. There's still a very good chance the program can stay on an elite level. Umass has success before Cal as well. Maybe you have heard of Julius Erving? They had one NCAA appearance from 1950 to the Cal era. I meant actual success. One? That's almost as many appearances as Memphis has vacated Final 4s.
