  1. From what I've seen (anecdotal, yes), the large bulk of fans tend to be casual. They root for the team, but don't follow it intensely. They simply either don't care enough to dig into the deeper stats (math isn't exactly a well-loved combo with hanging out watching a game for most people) or don't have the time. So they go largely off reputation, what they hear and which players seem to be trying hard at the times they watch. I don't think it's as much intentionally avoiding stats as it is not feeling that sports is an important enough area to focus large amounts of time pouring over numbers. From what I've seen, the majority of fans who would identify themselves as die-hards are also stupid. Intelligent people don't have time to be heavily invested in sports, we're just the suckers
  2. Also we should extend Marlon Byrd at 12M/year
  3. Oooh, I hope we have Alex Rios OPS updates the rest of the year
  4. Watching AJ Pierzynski pop out with the bases loaded was way more satisfying than listening to Dawson sleepwalk thru the stretch
  5. Soriano had a long run to a ball down the LF line, he overran it and whiffed on the catch. With a 13-0 lead on a ball that Soriano gave it all for, the morons started booing
  6. I hope the fucksticks that just booed Soriano get arrested for DUIs tonight
  7. That one that Len commented on was right down the middle.
  8. On the other hand, Pam Ward She's doing games on ESPNU this year. The Wrigley game may be the Big Ten's only ESPNU game in 2010. Not that I mind her. She's called some big wins for Northwestern. Iowa will be one of 3 schools sending their bands to Evanston this year, which is unheard of. Iowa's passing up trips to Minnesota (first time in new stadium), Michigan, and Indiana. The athletic department must be taking the game more seriously. Also, the WAC is giving Fresno State and Nevada until 10/25 to pay their $5 million exit fee or else they'll sue. I'm surprised they wouldn't put the Wrigley game on a real network
  9. On the other hand, Pam Ward
  10. I'm already hearing and seeing the idiots clamoring for better fundamentals and defense; like those are the only two problems this team has. So you admit that those are two problems, but are upset that people want them to get better in those areas? :-k Yes, because people over emphasize that nonsense while ignoring the bigger problems and the Cubs often end up "fixing" stuff that doesn't help the team actually win more games. Defense is nonsense? I realize that this site is all about the numbers and that defense is harder to analyze statistically than offense, but your statement is ridiculous. You don't think playing better defense helps you win more games? I can't speak for jersey, but I don't see any issue with our defense. Certainly not to the point that we need to focus on improving it in the offseason
  11. Add 2005 to the list of horribly depressing game logs to look over. A week and a [expletive] half of Nomar
  12. If his [expletive] manager didn't keep sub 300 OBPs in front of him all year, he could've inched closer in RBI
  13. You mean his .335 OBP and sub .800 OPS? His line is .288/.335/.463/.798 at the CF position. I'd say that's about market value for 12M a year. So Kosuke's contract is fair? He plays RF. And FWIW, Fangraphs lists Rio's value at $11.7M. He's also been slumping recently. And he has the capability to play CF. Rios's "slump" is about 3 months and counting.
  14. It seems to be the consensus that the top 4 are a cut above anyone else in the conference. Here's who they only play once: Purdue vs. Northwestern @ Michigan Ohio State vs. MSU @ Northwestern Michigan State @ OSU vs. Indiana Illinois vs. Michigan @ Minnesota
  15. http://espn.go.com/ncb/notebook/_/page/notebooksummershootaround100830/big-ten Gottlieb picks Illinois to win the Big Ten

  17. I'd settle for November.
  18. Successful sexual conquests can increase one's confidence in himself, contributing to greatness on the golf course. Tiger established a level of greatness on the golf course (likely) long before any sexual conquests. lol - you don't know that for certain! Nobody cares about banging the dorky golf prodigy with no money

  20. Success while boning. Failure while not boning. I'm sure there are no other factors to consider in the equation. Like him being away from golf for a year, and additional scrutiny from all directions
  21. I don't think that was the boning everything that did that. It was the being married while boning everything that did. He no longer has that issue. I don't think it was the boning everything that made him a billionaire with athletic success either. Maybe...but it didn't hurt. (Again, other than the whole "married" aspect...that was problematic.) I don't see how there's any more evidence that it helped compared to hurting.

  23. I'm still trying to wrap my head around why Soriano was likely to get injured based on the fact that he'd never been injured. And that fangraphs article on Rios is 3 months old. He's now below the .350 wOBA they were cautiously regressing him to. Also, when can we expect you to refer to Soriano's salary #s through fangraphs?
  24. How does that show they know baseball? Santo was better over a longer period of time.
