    Self was still trying to recruit the Chicago area. He wasn't gonna say anything too good about Illinois. And it worked. He got Wright and Collins. Well that's because Bruce is racist

    It's not just Lee, it's 2 months of Nady too. As awful as Pena was last year, he outperformed Cubs 1B.

    I'll give both coaches credit for the way they spoke of each other in interviews prior to the game. Self talked about how he had a good thing going at Illinois and Weber took that to the next level with the title appearance. Weber talked about how Self set him up nicely upon his arrival.

    And Dee couldn't shoot a left-handed layup, though I'd say the blame for that lies on his high school (grade school really) coaches, not the one year he spent with Self.

    Offensively, 1B, C, and 3B are almost certain to be upgrades. There is no position that is certain to be a downgrade. I'm fairly optimistic SS and 2B will be upgrades as well. I'd be surprised if we're worse than a middle of the pack offense.

    I can't picture any scenario that would involve Bill Self still being our coach today. There are probably 10 jobs that have opened up since '04 that he would've taken.

    If Colvin can come close to matching last year's #s, I think Soriano is going to be protected from tough righties most of the season. In the very least I'd expect his #s to artificially look better thanks to facing a higher % of lefties compared to his total # of PAs.

    It's not baseless, and I don't irrationally hate Soriano. I just don't think he's going to be very good this year, based on a number of factors. I readily admit I could be wrong. I really hope he does great though, even if it means I have to see him do that John Cena thing 40 times this year. I love that John Cena thing.

    Oh I'm sure he realizes his leash is tightening, and with a new AD on the horizon, it's do or die. He just doesn't seem the type to look for a golden parachute.

    He was fine until he did the funeral thing. Not sure what he thought that would prove? He's not the most savvy guy in the world. It worked on the team though.

    To defend Weber a bit, he went all spazzy because the media and coach hairpiece's adoring fans wouldn't let go of him. Self's southern charm won them all over, and they weren't going to like the dorky Purdue guy coming in to replace him. You still see the cult of Self operating here and there amongst Illinois media and fans. It's a really strange phenomenon.
