Fair enough...although I'd argue that the player facility upgrades are a necessity and long overdue (and embarrassing in their current state). Could still be a better long term use of their money, though. If all of this [expletive] ultimately (and in a relatively timely matter) takes us from what would otherwise be the Yankees of just the NL Central (but well behind other teams in MLB who have pulled way ahead or already were ahead) to Yankees/Dodgers of MLB status, I'm OK with it. Unless by the time we become the Yankees of MLB severe restrictions are put into place to prevent that from mattering.

I don't know about the lining the coffers idea but it's pretty much an irrefutable fact that they have pulled back payroll they can afford to provide, but choose not to for now. A media member following this team absolutely should include statements like that in a discussion of the circumstances surrounding the team. I guess that depends on how you look at things. If payroll was reduced to privately fund renovations, does that count as money they can afford to provide to payroll but aren't? I suppose, technically, yes, but if they truly need to do that to do what needs to be done, then I understand doing it. But other than the infrastructure, none of the renovations are necessary. They're designed to make more money for a club with the 3rd highest revenue in baseball.

Well this is [expletive] pathetic. I wouldn't argue that at all. I'm just tired of people putting the blame on Theo, when its extremely likely he's not had a true choice in spending more. To me, the fact I honestly think we've got a realistic shot at contention next year, speaks very highly of our FO, given what I think is a [expletive] payroll cap, that Theo didn't see coming immediately, when he got here. Well Theo won't be staying past that first contract if Ricketts told him he could spend money and then said, nah nevermind.

The Cubs are not going to move. They know this. That is why they aren't negotiating from the standpoint of worrying about what would happen if the Cubs left. Not that Ricketts wants to work with the rooftop owners, but I wonder if anyone suggests putting the jumbotron where the current scoreboard is thereby avoiding the whole rooftop view issue. Ricketts would get the added revenue from the jumbotron and still get a cut from the rooftops. You wonder if anyone suggest removing the landmark protected scoreboard to replace it with a jumbotron so as to avoid blocking out maybe 1 rooftop in LF with it. Yeah, I wonder too
