Yeah, I actually started to like him after the Harden trade, but now I'm just confused. How is it confusing? If Wood accepts arbitration, he's going to get at least $8 million, which will take the Cubs out of the Peavy sweepstakes, and really limit his options for a RF most likely. The only confusing part is why he traded for Gregg and let Wood go to begin with if Wood supposedly would have accepted a 1 year deal. Or why he can't trade Gregg after offering arbitration to Wood? Jim Hendry thinks Kevin Gregg is a better pitcher than Kerry Wood. -

You're asking Kerry Wood to go to Jim Hendry, say, "hey you know how I really badly want to come back and play for the Cubs again, and you told me no, you can't." Well, I want to help you anyway. I would like it if we could lower my value on the free agent market so that you, the person who kicked me to the curb could benefit. I'd like the franchise who I will be competing against for the rest of my career to benefit at my expense.

*laughs til he cries* Why? I even specified that it wasn't necessarily his fault. I guess you can't even allude to the fact that Wood might not be a saint without people here flipping out. Why? Because it's utterly nonsensical? I love this new Wood the saint strawman when much of this thread has been people calling Kerry a liar regarding his willingness to accept a one year contract. Apparently Jim Hendry(who's apparently Kerry's best friend now? When did this nonsense start?) believed he was willing to take a one year contract. That or he's following the Brian Sabean plan of first round picks = bad.

Then Wood would decline arbitration. Jim Hendry chose Kevin Gregg + whatever middle IF he throws 3M away on to suck for 150 ABs this year over Kerry Wood + a 400,000 piece of crap middle IF.

It sucks but its defensible. We really just don't have the unlimited budget we had in previous offseasons, or at least until we get an owner. Hopefully this owner crap will be resolved sooner rather than later. But at least we have Soriano! It's not defensible when it's a ~3M difference between Wood and the mediocre closer you acquired for no damn reason.

Agreed. If MSU plays like that they're going to lose by about 35 to UNC. If they play like that all year, the Big Ten might only get 3 tourney teams. (They won't, but still yeesh)

The difference for common opponents is basically the Texas Tech game.

It's to make sure the conference has its best chance at making the title game. If you have the #3 BCS team getting passed up in favor of the #15 team due to the #15 team running up the score in conference play it wouldn't help the conference at all.

I still don't get where the matchups come from. It would seem to make sense to me to just match them up spot to spot according to the previous year's standings. That would make the matchups: Wisky/UNC PU/Duke IU/Clemson MSU/VT OSU/Miami MN/MD PSU/GT Iowa/FSU UM/Wake ILL/VA NU/BC Doesn't really change much overall, but it makes more sense this way IMO.
