  1. I wouldn't cry if Aramis leaves. He's not a prime time guy. His "numbers" vastly overstate his value. At $10MM/year, OK, but Lee-type money at 13? Nope. Make the A-Rod trade and use the Aramis money for a pitcher. Heck, maybe there's a side agreement between the Cubs and Yanks; NY gets Aramis signed, they send A-Rod to the Cubs for a couple of pitchers and a reserve player like Jones. I don't care about the age difference, A-Rod >>> Aramis. Finally, LA doesn't seem to be interested in bringing back Nomar, but we could sure use him if he could give us 125 games started or so.
  2. I'd rather trade Barrett for Vernon Wells, a more realistic trade if the Cubs added a young pitcher like say, Marmol.
  3. It's the Cubs, need you ask? Of course we'd get the LA version.
  4. I love D-Lee, but I am not convinced 2005 wasn't just a fluke anomaly. I believe his 2002-2004 numbers are more indicative of what we can expect, and those numbers are nice, don't get me wrong! But they pale in comparison to A-Rod and his production at a more difficult position. Lee for A-Rod? Yep, I'd do it. That would mean in effect the Cubs would have traded Hee Seop for A-Rod. Think about that for a second.
  5. My understanding is the Phillies (1) want someone other than Burrell to protect Howard in the lineup (Carlos Lee? Soriano?), and (2) want some salary relief to invest in pitching. So I don't see why they'd take on both Dempster AND Jones, but maybe one of the two, and that would make me happy (both will make $5MM in 2007). That puts our net investment in Burrell at $8MM, and he's worth that. Plus, we rid ourselves of a player we don't want. Count me in. We'll include someone like Guzman or Mateo to seal the deal and see if they bite.
  6. The Mariners were Junior's team, the Yankees are Jeter's team, the Rangers no one cared about. You'd think A-Rod would like a team to call his own, and we be it. Come Alex, join us, the water is fine.... In reality though, no way the Yankees trade him, why should they? So he's unhappy and the fans don't like him, boo hoo, he's also extremely productive. Cashman isn't stupid.
  7. Why does Philly hate Burrell so much? The last two seasons, he's been dead on 390 OBP and 500 SLG. For all the man-love on this site for Adam Dunn for example, Burrell is just as productive and wouldn't cost nearly as much in trade. For all the talk about Carlos Lee, Burrell is a better hitter and a little younger. With Pat the Bat in your lineup hitting 5th, Murton could then be used to help acquire some pitching in trade. Murton for Erik Bedard? BTW, I realize Burrell is owed a lot of money, but $$ isn't a concern for us this year. We need the players, and Burrell solves LF for us. He'll be entering his age 30 season in 2007.
  8. I don't care about soft-tossing so much as (1) throw strikes, (2) give me innings, (3) give me lots of groundballs. That's all we need from a #4 starter. If one of these guys can chew up the innings and give you that output for $3MM to $4MM/year, they'd be a bargain in this market. Why not take a chance? Cubs have the money to spend....
  9. Didn't see any comments on this in Rogers' latest column, anyone have some info on these two?
  10. Mark Prior ain't worth the $4MM in arbitration. Put a fork in him, and put the money to use towards a pitcher that can help us. A chronically-injured guy has no value, despite the once-fearsome talent. Mark Fidrych, Bo Jackson....
  11. Lou would not hesitate for a second in platooning a guy like Jock, because Lou himself was platooned quite a bit during his career. He also used the platoon in Seattle some if I recall.
  12. Again, I'm not a Dunn fan, but if the Reds are going to GIVE him away darn near, then sure, I'll take his 390 OBP and 40 HR. I could then turn Murton into a pitcher, throw money at Soriano, and trade for Vernon Wells. Nice. Get in on this one, Jim.
  13. Yes on both, I'm keen for these two. The more I learn about Matsuzaka, the more I want him. He's younger than Hill for crying out loud.
  14. I'm not a big Dunn fan, he makes too much money for what he offers compares to what we already have. BUT, I'd do something like Murton + Marshall for Dunn + Freel. They get salary relief, a replacement (and likely, better long-term) LF, and a starting pitcher. We get two starting OF-ers, one of whom is the leadoff guy we need. Good trade for both teams. We'd definitely need to replace Marshall with one of the available veteran FA 4/5 starter types out there (eg, Lilly, Batista, Suppan), but $$ does not appear to be a concern this offseason. 1. Freel-CF 2. Theriot/Graffanino-2B (Tony G is a FA target for me, definitely) 3. Lee-1B 4. Ramirez-3B 5. Dunn-LF 6. Barrett-C 7. Jones-RF 8. Izturis-SS Even without making additional moves, that's not a bad lineup. Every guy 1-6 is a 350+ OBP type, and we'd have tons of speed at the top of the order. I like it. In fact, I'll include an additional prospect, something like Eric Patterson or Jake Fox, to get this deal done.
  15. So......does Rothschild stay, or does Lou go with someone else? That's really the only coaching staff job I care much about.
  16. Change the thread title--Piniella gets the job according to the ST. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/deluca/96509,CST-SPT-deluca14.article
  17. 1. Hire Lou. 2. Prior, Eyre and Pie for A-Rod. 3. 3-way: Jones + Soto + $3MM to LAD, Izturis + Dempster + Eric Patterson to KC; Sweeney + Grudzielanek + Sisco to LAD; Drew + mid-level LAD prospect to Cubs. 4. Sign Matsuzaka. 5. Murton to Baltimore for Erik Bedard. 6. Sign Tony Graffanino. 7. Sign Dave Roberts. 8. Michael Barrett + Angel Guzman + Mitch Atkins to Toronto for Vernon Wells. World Series. 1. - Roberts, LF 2. - Drew, RF 3. - Rodriguez, SS 4. - Lee, 1B 5. - Ramirez, 3B 6. - Wells, CF 7. - Theriot/Graffanino, 2B 8. - Blanco, C SP: Zambrano, Matsuzaka, Hill, Bedard, Marshall RP: Wood, Howry, Wuertz, Aardsma, Marmol, Ohman, Clay Rapada?
  18. Can Mark Prior even be traded, given that he was on the DL at the end of the season? I have to think Prior is a heckuva lot more attractive than Garcia, and Pie is our best prospect who, if he pans out, solves the Yankees post-Bernie Williams CF quandary (with Sheffield gone, they could make Gorilla the DH and slide Damon to LF). Eyre is a quality setup man for Rivera, they'd surely like that. So really, the only issue (as always!) is Prior's health. As for 3B, with the money the Yankees would save by cutting A-Rod, they could easily take Beltre off Seattle's hands as one example.
  19. WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!!! Desperate teams that have screwed up and find themselves in a hole, need to overpay to get talent. That is the cost of your past mistakes. Look at Detroit. I sure wouldn't have paid what they paid for Ordonez and I-Rod. Kenny Rogers either. But they wouldn't be where they are without them. Would the Dodgers have made the playoffs without Furcal? Look, the Cubs suck. But they do have money. Hendry can buy his way out of the hole if for ONCE, he uses his money to get two or three talented players that are actual difference makers, instead of four or five mediocrities with the same money, who make NO difference to the team. Soriano 5/80, OK, pay it. We need the player.
  20. If Piniella is hired, then Scott Eyre can kiss his fat ass goodbye, because Lou makes his pitchers work. Eyre infamously stated, for those who forget, he loved the idea of signing with the Cubs to play for Dusty because he (Dusty) "doesn't make you run laps." Wonderful. And what a fitting summary of Dusty's approach. Prior + Eyre + Felix Pie for A-Rod, and hire Lou. I'm in. I won't hijack, but I have a 3-way trade in mind to bring us JD Drew too, and then I'd be PLENTY pleased. Warming to the Piniella idea, but still not 100% there.....
  21. I think Brackman is who we end up with at this point. Tampa has fallen in love with Price, and KC likes the idea of Wieters replacing Buck, or becoming a closer, either role fits a KC need. I think we get Brackman b default. I can live with that, tho I'd prefer Price for the Cubs.
  22. Read this: http://www.kansascity.com/mld/kansascity/sports/baseball/15208425.htm?template=contentModules/printstory.jsp
  23. If the Yankees decline to pick up Mussina's option, they will have more than enough money to outbid everyone for Matsuzaka, without any impact to their payroll. Chances the Cubs win this game? Nil.
  24. I love D-Lee; but 1B are easier to find than slugging shortstops. I would trade Lee for A-Rod in a heartbeat, but the Yankees aren't that stupid. What irks me is that the Yankees were able to get A-Rod in the first place, for nothing more than Fonzie and their deep wallet, that just stinks. We'd have to empty the boat to trade for Rodriguez, but the Yankees move one over-rated 2B to Texas and they get a HOF-er in return. Disgusting.
