    If Colvin progresses this year and performs well, he'll get promoted to Daytona quickly, but I agree, AA is a stretch. Knowing the Cubs, they might give him a quick look there right at the end of the season, but he's still a 2009 arrival date target. Your 2009 OF: Colvin, Pie and Soriano? I think either Matt Murton or Eric Patterson will not be a Cub long-term, there just isn't enough room. I am presuming that Patterson's struggles at 2B will push him to the OF sooner rather than later.

    Lou is the first guy we've had here who seems like a "real manager", an old school, traditional type of guy with authority, since Popeye. I love managers like that. Leo was the archetype of course, on other teams, I'm thinking of guys like Sparky Anderson, Earl Weaver, Lasorda, etc... I think Lou has his fun, but won't put up with any crap either. He's an adult running the clubhouse, not "one of the guys" like Baylor and Baker, or a "clipboard guy" like Riggleman. I know it's unfair to over-stereotype, but that's my feel of it, Lou has "it", for what that's worth. And yes, one of the highlights of the year will be when Lou blows up for the first time. In four years of Dusty, we saw that what, twice? There was the Larussa shout-out game, and the game where Dusty kicked dust on home plate (I forget the opponent), that's about it. Go Lou!

    Frankly, I'd like to see Floyd, Murton and Jones get about equal PT during the year, that would be roughly 2/3 of a season plus PH duty, so about 425 ABs each. They should be able to live with that. Murton--best OBP and defense Floyd--best SLG Jones--most consistent hitter strictly against RHP Each has their merits, none is an All-Star, none is a slug. Murton is the best baserunner of the three. But overall, I don't think he's so much better than the other two to merit full-time duty. He can always convince Lou otherwise with performance on the field, but I think the 3-way split would work well for everybody.

    A Phil Rogers article I actually like for once. Of course, it doesn't mean the Cubs are thinking this way... But a smart team should consider all its options, in the right deal, a trade of Z should be considered, absolutely. There's no such thing as an untouchable player, relative to the return it might bring. Besides, I'm one of those that believes a pitcher's value to a team is fundamentally overrated in the first place. Even the best pitcher can only help you win 1/5th of your games. Look at Steve Carlton and the 72 Phillies as one example. I love Z like everyone else, but he is not off-limits.

    I'm not overly excited at the prospect of a "VERY TALL" pitcher. Cause my opinion is....they will suck, eventually. Excluding Randy Johnson Sisco Rauch J. Juden Ryan Anderson Chris Young JR Richard This is NOT an impressively listed of 6'8 or taller pitchers. Now Richard and Young turned out great, but everybody else has either stunk, suffered career altering injuries, or flat not miss big time. So forgive me...if the Cubs had a choice between Wieters and Brackman, I'd take Wieters everytime. Huh? Your list has 7 names including Unit. 3 of the 7 turned out good. I'd argue (ignoring the small sample size) that's a much higher success rate than the typical pitching prospect. You give me Brackman to go with Pawelek and Samardzija, I feel good in predicting that one of those three will pan out. Just as I feel confident in one of Veal, Gallagher or Guzman working out for us long-term. We really do have better pitching than some are giving the Cubs system credit for.

    I still think we'll come out smelling like roses with either Weiters or Brackman, I prefer the hitter, but either will be our best prospect pick since Prior. Cautiously excited....7 foot pitcher?!!

    No, Brant Brown really did look like a good follow-on to Gracie, dude could hit. Then the flyball incident happened, and he was never the same after that. Turned him into Lieber, that was cool.

    I am very pleased to hear about Billy Petrick's returning health! I always liked him, maybe he can still have a shot. Just stay healthy, dude! Two years ago, it looked like Petrick and Blasko would be rocketing up through the system, damn injuries.....

    If Kerry Wood can throw 50 pitches with no pain on successive days, there is zero chance he is not the team closer by late May. I mean, let's get serious here. We have seen the best Ryan Dempster can be. We have seen the best Kerry Wood can be. Is there even a remote question who you should turn over the game to? Dempster will be one very expensive $5MM middle reliever, that is true, but who cares for a team that can spend $7MM on a Jason Marquis. Keep Kerry healthy and give him the job. I predict Gagne-esque success for Kid K as a closer.

    I want Wieters; we have enough young pitchers. But, I'm putting my money on us getting Brackman by default. I simply cannot see Tampa (which so desperately needs pitching) passing up Price, and KC (which has quite a few young pitchers now) needs a catcher. They'll take Wieters, and we end up with Brackman. The Royals won't come right out and say it, but they've given up on John Buck, they acquired Jason LaRue from the Reds to hold them over some. Wieters makes way too much sense for KC. I wish you could "trade down" in the baseball draft like in football, I'd trade the #3 to a team that needs someone like Brackman in exchange for a lower 1st round pick and a 2nd rounder, then maybe we could start filling in all of our position player holes in the minor leagues.

    Cubs most overhyped? Mark Pawelek. High school pitchers are a lousy high 1st round pick, Pawelek is just another example of that. He has some talent obviously, he COULD become a genuine prospect, but right now color me unimpressed. For those that mention Dopirak and Harvey, please....You need to have a legitimate upside to be considered a prospect. No one outside of the Cubs fan sites thinks anything of either one's future. And Samardzija, too little information to say whether he is overhyped...or maybe underhyped. Let's hope the latter.

    Sheez, how many ways can I disagree with this list? E-Patt is grossly underrated, but they put Shark (who has proved nothing yet) 4th? Over Gallagher and Pawelek? Dope, that is just a joke, non-prospect bust. Harvey too, though I could see him at the bottom of the list just for "tools" sake. :roll: Not that anyone cares, but my Top 10; and despite his marginal "graduation", I'm going to include the Gooz-- 1. Pie 2. Veal 3. Patterson 4. Guzman 5. Gallagher 6. Samardzija 7. Moore 8. Colvin 9. Rapada 10. Ceda

    Absolutely Sori should go to CF if he's willing, it's much easier to find a corner OF than a CF. He has the speed and the arm, why wouldn't he be at worst, acceptable on defense out there? He looked fine in LF to me. If Pie is ready (he won't be), he's the kid, you put him in RF and tell him to learn it. No big deal. If his arm really is stronger than Soriano's, I'd rather have Pie in RF anyways.

    If Prior could be healthy again, the smart move would be to trade Z right now for A-Rod. Won't happen, but it would be killer. I'm like some others, I hate giving so much money to a pitcher when (a) at best, they can help you win games only every 5th day, and (b) they are always susceptible to serious injury and perma-worthlessness. Especially a pitcher with a track record of mindless abuse points and occasional injuries already (hand, back). You've gotta sign Z if you're Hendry, but I would at least consider the possibility if Cashman were interested.

    I'll be glad to take every one of those lines from those 5 guys. So long as D-Lee is healthy, that's an underestimate of his likely SLG. The guy was 660 in 2005! I think a full season in Wrigley for Sori underestimates his SLG as well. He could make 50 HR as a Cub, easy. I'd be plenty happy with those numbers for Murt and Barrett. I'm hoping for better from Aramis. If we only had a true #5 hitter on our team....(sigh)

    Way too much. I think Boggs could out-hit Sammy. Easily... however I was referencing an old Denny's commercial where Tony Gwynn is giving a press conference about how he was traded for Sammy Sosa and they asked what else and he said "Some scrambled eggs" or something. It was to promote their grand slam baseball cards and stuff. I'll never forget the end where he and Sosa are walking down the corridor and Sammy says in his broken english "Don't take it so hard, Tony! I got traded for Wade Boggs, and a side of rice pilaf!" Good times. Doh take ee so harr Tony. One of the greatest commercials in the history of television. YouTube please, I'm begging someone.

    I've seen Gordon play. He's a slam-dunk, guaranteed future all-star in the big leagues (barring injury). He'll be batting third in the KC order before Memorial Day gets here. Probably the fastest-rising, surest thing college 3B to come along since Bob Horner. Top pitcher? It would be hard to overlook Homer Bailey I think.

    Trading Jock for spare change is fine with me--IF the Cubs already have their 3rd OF on hand. Make a trade for Ryan Church, or even better, Rocco Baldelli, and I'll send Jock to Pittsburgh for peanuts, why not? If nothing else, you recover $5MM in payroll expense. Don't forget, Jones was signed as a free agent, so there are no sunk costs with him, we didn't give up any players to get him, so we shouldn't be too upset if we get nothing for him, either. Some forget that the only reason we have Jones in the first place is that Hendry had an awful offseason last year and found himself in the pickle of needing to choose between Jock, Juan Encarnacion, Preston Wilson and Jeremy Burnitz. In hindsight, Hendry picked the least of these evils, but I care less if Jock leaves as suddenly as he arrived. Once we have his replacement.

    I would like to go on record here in January and echo a comment Tim has made several times--I expect a breakout season in 07 for Angel Guzman. In the ideal scenario, Miller shows he's healthy, making him tradeable for other needs during the season, and The Gooz claims the #5 spot for himself. This would offer the added bonus of giving Sean Marshall a full season in AAA, which IMO, he needs (if for no other reason to build up durability and refine his breaking ball). If Prior is actually healthy and effective, then all bets are off, but that would be a lovely problem to have. Needless to say, I'll believe it when I see it. Gooooooozzzzz..........
