    Hey if he wants to push the Padres or Mets to make a trade to acquire them after he signs on to manage, I’m all for it.

    Well now every one of the Cubs core four players have had significant injuries on the season. Javy is out of the season and that Rizzo injury doesn’t promising.

    I posted most of my thoughts on the season in one of the disastrous Brewers game threads: This team is infuriating. Sure they could make the playoffs, but I’m okay with a significant shakeup. 2016 was a once in a (possibly) lifetime team. I get that, but 2017 it was “the hangover”. 2018 was “everyone got hurt but we still won 95”. 2019 had a couple injuries, but nothing extreme or unexpected. [They lost Javy in September. It's not like they were cruising for 90+ wins and he went down. Really his production since the heel-injury derailed his season and he kept playing through it (the medical staff strikes again).] It’s the same unit and has a handful of very excellent performances, but is just so up and down. It’s just not there. Honestly it falls on the entire organization. Ownership tightened purse strings on a team that they make hundreds of millions in profit a year. The front office made poor decisions. Joe plays the hands he's dealt, but still proceeds to make terrible choices related to line-up and bullpen. And ultimately as Theo said “judge us by what we do on the field”, it’s on the players. This year has been exhausting. Hope they give us a fun memory or two in the next few weeks, but I'm trying not to get emotionally invested.

    I'm not sure what I expect the front office to do as far as search process. It's possible the Cubs have the most high profile opening this offseason. Unless the Red Sox situation changes that. Regardless, the candidate I'm most intrigued with is Astros Bench Coach Joe Espada. He's in his 40s and has been a scout/special assistant for the Yankees, 3rd base coach for the Yankees, and now the Bench Coach for the Astros. He's bilingual and regarded as a strong communicator. He also declined to interview last year for any positions, perhaps because there weren't many intriguing options at the time (Baltimore, NYM, Cincinnati, Texas, Minnesota). So it's not as though he's been passed up by teams.

    A couple bad calls and a bit of bad luck, but some self inflicted pain in this game. Very frustrating day.

    I also think that it was that they didn’t even try. As a fan it was frustrating but I can’t even imagine how maddening it must have been to be a star on this team, hear the President of your organization discuss how the offense just broke, and then two weeks later cry poor as two young offensive superstars (including his friend Harper) sit on the market without a [realistic] offer from your club. Players don't give a horsefeathers about this as much as fans. Show him the most money and he will sign. I'm sure he's far more pissed they dicked with his service time and cost him a year of free agency. Oh I don’t think it’ll affect signing him. Even without the Boras factor, he’ll take the best offer for him and his family. I was referring to just being frustrated in season about a lack of support for the team prior to this season.

    He’s just waiting for free agency and a big payday elsewhere. The owners didn’t sign his friend Harper and I still think he’s ticked about that. I also think that it was that they didn’t even try.     That is exciting. Always good to see them associated with the top bonuses. The Cubs have been very strong in IFA and I don’t hate the overall approach (aggressive but spread out over several players), but I am hoping one of these years they identify and splurge on the top talent like Franco, Dominguez, etc.

    Counterpoint, it's great news for Willson. More guys to gun down trying to steal. Best wishes to anyone who tries to steal first on Willson and finds themselves out of the running lane.

    I interpreted it as “has performed the best” this season, which I suppose you could make a case since Miller has been really great all season. I’m a fan of Miller, but I’d take Alzolay over him easily. If they actually mean Miller has surpassed Alzolay, I’d have a very difficult time understanding that especially with how he’s looked recently.

    Tom will be pumped with the latest Fangraphs mock. Very interesting that now it’s been a couple draft pundits connect them with HS arms. Wonder if the new Pitch lab has changed the way they view pitching development structure of HS arms.

    BA too. Would like to get that type of power in the system With the track record of this front office on college hitters, I’d be very excited if they felt like they should draft Hoese. It’ll be very interesting next weekend when the mocks firm up a bit and guys like Callis and Kiley can give a better idea of who is connected to whom.

    Also Zobrist was scratched late yesterday for "personal reasons". He was also late to ST for "personal reasons", right before Harper signed with the Phillies. It could just be an actual personal reason or IL-stint, but a trade of WS hero and seemingly (hopefully) good-guy Ben Zobrist to make room for domestic abuser Addison Russell would be some kind of juxtaposition.

    Pace doesn't really think like that. He'll probably try to get into the 1st or something. I think Brian was saying that it would be amazing if the Bears first rounder they gave up was something like pick #32 and the pick they receive from OAK was #37 or so. It wouldn’t be that we gave up two first round picks for Mack, just a first and move back a couple spots.

    MLB.com had 6 Cubs in the top 100 (top 72, really) and 4 in the top 50 at the end of '14. 3rd Bryant 5th Russell 36th Almora 48th Soler 53rd Edwards 72nd Schwarber At BA it was still six to start 2015, but even more impressive. The Cubs had four in the top 20 overall prospects. 1st Bryant 3rd Russell 12th Soler 19th Schwarber 38th Edwards 83rd Billy McKinney

    Yeah the front office really pulled off the opposite of the “paper clip into a millionaire” with that series of moves. Yikes. At least the current trade from last night is much better. I mean several years of Taj, Noah, and a couple from Omer is certainly more valuable than Eddy Curry. There are just multiple stops along the way that would have been much better places to stop. Great point. I actually had no idea this whole set of transactions started with Curry. I was thinking this started with Nurkic/Harris draft.

    I believe he had TJS in July so this is like a Smyly situation. It’s probably a two year deal. Have to keep him on the 40 man till season starts and then move him over to the 60-day DL.

    I’ve always been very skeptical of Loxas, but I think this is likely true. I mean it’s almost negligence for a team in contention to not check in with any reliever on the market. Granted I know he just seems to throw stuff at the wall to see what sticks. This could be that. I will say maybe he is somewhat connected. Loxas actually posted about the Cubs being interested in Realmuto possibly at the expense of Contreras and then Craig Mish reported the same thing a day or two later. I’m still surprised.

    I think there’s a lot of value in bringing in Jon Gray if you can this offseason. Every team is going to need extra SP and his team control/stuff is a good combination. It was posted earlier, but if Eric L from Fangraphs is right that Happ is too much for Jon Gray, maybe David Bote actually makes sense for both teams. COL is likely losing LeMahieu and launch angle will certainly play in Denver. It’s not too cost prohibitive for the Cubs’ side provided that they do bring in someone who can play 2b/SS Completely separate, but I’ve been hoping Happ to PIT for Vazquez will be an option.
