    They have a top 10 farm system and no contracts that look to be albatrosses. 55 mil in guaranteed money in 2013, 25 in 2014 and 26 in 2015. A good system and a lot of money is pretty much exactly how you'd want to be set up for the long term, isn't it? stop depressing us

    Honest question... Is there any actual evidence to back up the old "get more for pitchers/relievers/lefties at the deadline" theory? I'd be really interested to know. In this case, I'd think Marshall would have quite a bit more value now because at the deadline he'd only be under team control for half of a season. good point... didn't consider that.

    I wouldn't trade Marshall now anyway. assuming he doesn't suddenly become horrible, cubs could get so much more at the deadline from some desperate fringe playoff team needing a bullpen lefty. marmol's a different story, because there's a good chance his arm is already half detached.

    I'd be all over that. what the hell would be the point? we're garbage next year anyway, and after the season he'll either have sucked and not be worth re-signing or good and too expensive to sign. well, i'd be all over that if we keep garza and sign fielder.
