  1. And Jensen catches the yips in his pro debut. 3 walks. An rbi single allowed. Zero Ks. About as bad as you could draw up.
  2. Hearn debuting tonight, in addition to Jensen.
  3. Have to wonder if both of them changed their asking prices after the draft or just Hendrie that threw the wrench in the works.
  4. Weird to call that news at this point, since he supposedly agreed to terms weeks ago. Yeah, but it isn't "official." The agreeing to terms weeks ago is how Callis knows it's going to be official today. Just my guess. It also helps if I remember that Chambers agreeing to go pro weeks ago probably IS news to most people.
  5. I'm guessing Mack Chambers is signing. Weird to call that news at this point, since he supposedly agreed to terms weeks ago.
  6. Luckily we know that he isn't seriously hurt, since he played last night.
  7. [tweet] [/tweet] The deadline is this Friday. I figured if the Cubs didn't sign Hendrie by this point he's not signing. Maybe something came up in his physical? Maybe he thinks he can improve his draft stock and get drafted higher in the coming years? Yeah, it doesn't seem likely at this point. I just got a bit nervous when I was crunching the numbers as to the available bonus pool space, but I was mathing all wrong. I thought the Cubs needed Hendrie to sign just slightly underslot to fit everything in, but I redid the figures and it looks like they have $17K or so available from the 5% overage.
  8. No it wouldn't. The biggest spenders aren't going to be able to horde everybody any more than they already can. A team's operating budget will still be a budget. If a Baltimore only wants to spend $60m on the major league roster they will have all the money in the world to sign any prospect they want. Hard capping it solves nothing. Get more money into the hands of younger players earlier in the process. Yes, set the luxury tax inclusive of draft/IFA spending and get rid of the pools, and that problem solves itself. If someone would rather give the next Kris Bryant(or Mark Appel) a 15 million bonus instead of the current Tyler Chatwood a 15 million AAV in free agency, that's fine with me. It also opens up more opportunities for teams to be smarter about their scouting and be more creative with where they try to find value at the amateur level. Maybe a team wants to experiment with paying through the nose for 5 guys who are top 20 talents and then doing no other draft spending of note, or maybe someone wants to give 1 million to 20 different guys. You can't do that in the pool system. A few problems I see there: 1. Maybe the biggest, is that there is absolutely no way the Union agrees to lumping amateur spending into the LT calculations unless the limit is raised by tens of millions, while also having a salary floor implemented for the big league team. The Union will fight for amateur bonuses right up until the point that it could theoretically take even $1 away from the guys already in the bigs. 2. What penalties are you putting out there to prohibit the big markets from simply blowing past the LT? Without a draft anymore, easily the biggest deterrent to blowing past the LT is now gone. Teams have already been taxed heavily for going over previous IFA limits, and it wasn't a deterrent. Hell, they even showed that having to sit out entire years of signing amateurs wasn't a big enough deterrent if they wanted to go balls out one year. 3. Like Regular Show said, the elite talents would garner tens of millions straight out of college if it were true FA. Only the big markets can afford to take these types of chances on the young, elite guys. It creates a world where the rich can get richer. I mean, it would theoretically make it quite easy for a team like the Yankees to win the WS and then still get the #1 overall pick in the draft the next summer. This isn't parity related, but I'd be remiss if I didn't also point out that the lack of a draft would create a lot of the same backchannel shadiness that plagues Latin America and the IFA process. You would have scouts meeting with 15 year olds in HS; coming to agreements with them; paying them under the table in HS or college (more than the college already is); etc.
  9. Anyone know why Wyatt Hendrie hasn't signed yet? I've looked on Twitter, but can't find a thing.
  10. Yeah, they need to focus their attention on getting minor leaguers a living wage; getting more money for pre-arb players; and putting a stop to service time manipulations. As much as I would love to see the Brewers never get a 1st round talent to sign with them, I agree 100% that it would kill parity.
  11. Bases were actually loaded. That was a real heads-up play to get the runner at 3rd and end the inning, rather than trying the longer throw to home.
  12. This take didn't age well. :D
  13. That's really aggressive, but I love it.
  14. He's also been blistering at the plate for over a month now. Since June 2nd (123 PAs) - .345/.369/.593, 21.1% K rate, 170 wRC+ That will definitely play as a 19/20 year old in full season ball. The talent that got the rave reviews in AZ is finally starting to show.
  15. Hated the Hannemann pick because of how old he was, his cost, and his lack of experience (due to missionary work or whatever it was). No way you spend a mil on a guy like that, IMO. Same here. I remember being floored when I saw that they gave Hannemann a 7 figure overslot deal. To be fair though, none of the guys I wanted at that pick have amounted to anything either.
  16. Nico starting at 2B tonight. Very interesting.
  17. No worries. Little and his 5+ ERA in his second attempt at Single A South Bend is on the mound tonight to make you forget about Pearson.
  18. Definitely been fun to follow. The ISO stat is a bit misleading due to your qualifier of 120+ PAs (drop it to 100 PAs and he isn't anywhere near the top), but the rest of the game has been nice. I wish we had an idea how many of his boatload of doubles are "hustle" doubles so common in the lower levels of the minors, and which ones are legit.
  19. I think we would all agree on this. This is why it was so hard watching them piss away the 2017 draft on all pitching; especially since there were 2 first round picks. Stick to what you are good at, boys.
  20. Fairly certain that one of them just got rounded up the additional $1,700. That's what I assume. Still surprised they went with the 3 7-figure guys route for this class. Same. I think I like the idea of going hard for 2 upper tier guys (like Quinterro and Made) and then spreading the remaining million+.
  21. It's been a week since he pitched. I hope he isn't dealing with another injury already. Believe he’s currently sidelined with a groin injury, but not expected to be serious That's great news, all things considered. Thanks.
  22. Good stuff. Nothing really new in the article for people following him closely. He could be a late season addition if he continues dominating at AAA. It's been a week since he pitched. I hope he isn't dealing with another injury already.
  23. Fairly certain that one of them just got rounded up the additional $1,700.
  24. https://www.bleachernation.com/2019/07/02/cubs-sign-the-top-catcher-in-the-ifa-class-to-the-largest-bonus-in-team-history/ Wasn't the Araujo money in the 2018-2019 period?
