  1. The Detroit Free Press had a piece on Maybin back in the summer about his relationship with the family that he was living with (lots of minor leaguers live with folks during the summer in the town where the team is). They talked a lot about what a good kid he is.
  2. We just need a troll posting as a journalism student on assignment giving us fake updates. That should provide some excitement.
  3. I don't believe for a second that the Cubs are serious bidders for Zito. I think the Cubs have become this year's Yankees since we've thrown around so much money. All the agents are using us to hike up the price for their client. Could be. Or people are just guessing Cubs everywhere to try and be right because the Cubs are throwing around so much money. I was listening to Mike & Mike a little while ago and they said Rangers or Mets for Zito.......no other serious players. No mention of the Cubs. Musta changed their tune because they specifically mentioned the Cubs earlier.
  4. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/160122,CST-SPT-cub05.article An article in the Suntimes talking about trading Jones while looking for a lefty bat. Also mentioned in the article- Theriot can play all OF spots. Theriot for CF? I like the kid but that's a weak offense.

  6. On Mike and Mike this morning they mentioned the Rangers going hard after Barry Zito and said the Cubs were in the bidding as well.
  7. Why not Dunn? Because someone here would have to change their name to Douchebag McGee. I thought Detroit shoulda tried trading for Dunn instead of signing Casey(maybe they did and were rebuffed). He could have played first and the Tigers have young pitching to trade. EDIT- and the Tigers need OBP almost as badly as the Cubs.
  8. I don't know, but if the Cubs trade JJ they will need to get a slugger or a high OBP guy for SS or CF. And they're supposedly looking for a lefty bat this week. Unless you get a realy good hitter a JJ trade / sign someone else looks like a lateral move to me. I think we could be looking at Floyd, which would be fine if this were 1999. Exactly. That's why I don't get it. I know Jones' value is pretty pretty good, but we'd be creating a hole.

  10. Rotoworld preview- http://www.rotoworld.com/content/features/column.aspx?sport=MLB&columnid=2&articleid=27208
  11. When I started this one I was hoping for Bruce and Hoopscubs visits.
  12. More than once I've seen Hendry's quote about the market last year (Furcal going way higher than he thought) and I think Hendry's taking the if you can't beat 'em, join 'em stance. Hendry and company could have said "man, it'd take 8 years at 18 per to get Soriano. That's not a sensible contract down the road and we'd like to get better value." Then, they'd end up without an impact bat. It's funny to me the previous restraint for top players, but the nice paydays for role players. Now everybody's gettin' paid.
  13. Suntimes says Hendry is loaded for bear. http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/122329,CST-SPT-cub03.article
  14. Well, I started a GM meetings thread, may as well start one for this week as well. http://www.baseballprospectus.com/ Subscription link has two articles on what teams will be / should be looking for. They say the Cubs still need to improve OBP and need an innings eater, but right now are probably the favorites in a weak NL Central. I really believe there will be lots o' trading this week. Hopefully the Cubs can improve the squad for 2007.
  15. Bobby Bowden said ebay starts trouble!
  16. They're looking at every possibility, including putting Jock there. Nothing is firm yet as trades take a lot more work than do free-agent signings. I like that they're still looking at the lineup, even with Soriano. Next week has some potential for big time moves. ( I said that last year too, but I might be right this time.)
  17. Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones?
  18. :D And I thought your strength was statistical analysis of baseball players.
  19. Sign O' the times- past couple of years the Cubs have targeted Floyd to start, this year they are spending so much money he's an option for the bench!
  20. In my opinion- as far as satisfying a team's particular needs and given the current free agent market, that would be the best free agent signing of the winter in MLB.
  21. does "and" mean hendry would want both? there's no way they could afford drew and soriano... Best. News. Yet. (Cubs optimism) (Cubs pessimism: "Hendry pursuing Furcal AND Pierre...") Yeah, but in this case losing Drew and settling for Soriano or vice versa is way better than losing Furcal and settling for Pierre!
  22. Don't you mean 31-36 mil? 110 minus 79 is 31 and 115 minus 79 is 36. Man, if we could find someone to take our dead weight (Dempster, Izturis, Jones, Rusch retire, maybe Eyre) we'd have a ton of money to spend. I wonder if Rusch's contract might be a writeoff due to his illness? "It's a write-off for them." "How is it a write-off?" "They just write it off." "Write it off what?" "Jerry, all these big companies, they write off everything." "You don't even know what a write-off is." "Do you?" "No, I don't." "But they do. And they're the ones writing it off."
  23. Well, then that shows my lack of understanding. I think I'll be at BP for a few minutes. I have the general idea, but I'm need more learnin.
  24. HR/9 explains a lot of Maddux's decline. He had superhuman location in his prime, now his location is more like a normal human being's and he occasionally throws mistake pitches that get clobbered. I agree. I guess the way I'm looking at it is the homers count as hits. If they were just warning track flies, they'd be outs. I know it's not an exact correlation, but that's how I was looking at it.
  25. This is purely my understanding- The way I see it there's a league average for batted balls in play. When a player is way above that leage average, they may come back to earth the next year. It also will sometimes mirror guys who've had a huge spike in their numbers, like Gary Matthews Jr. This is the same with pitchers. Maddux allows a lot of balls in play. If they find people's gloves, great. If they find the stands or gaps, he's in trouble. When he's pitching well (past couple of years), it's usually because his BABIP against is lower than normal. It's why high strikeout pitchers are so desirable, they don't allow the ball in play as much.
