  1. There's been lots of complaining about overpaying for mediocrity. Corey wasn't even good enough to be considered mediocre last year. Hairston is an adequate backup.
  2. Why not? They've wasted far more on other guys who are mostly just gloves, and their entire offseason focus was on guys who can catch the ball. Like who? Entire focus??
  3. I think the most compelling reason would be that there is a good chance he was the 4th best OF on the team, and $3m is not outlandish for 4th OF, especially not for a team that guarantees $5m for Neifi Perez. There was also a decent chance he'd be the 3rd best OF, and an outside shot of being the best or second best OF on this years team. That's not saying I expect him to be all that good this year, but the current OF isn't any good, and it wouldn't take much to outproduce some of them, at least. Neifi had a far better year than Corey did. Perhaps. But he still sucked, and he consistently sucks. Corey's off year was an unexpected low. Neifi's crappy season was an expected clunker. The point is if you are willing to pay Neifi $5m, you have to be willing to pay Corey $3m, so money can't be the reason. The Cubs aren't going shell out $5.5 million or so for 2 gloves.
  4. After last year, Corey has nothing to stand on. Would look like lots of sour grapes. Fine, I'll settle for any current or former Cub blasting Dusty. I have a feeling Walker will. That's a given. I can't wait to hear what Walker has to say on his way out of town. I'll take the flipside. I could care less about what Walker has to say. He's a malcontent that will have played for 6 different teams over 7 seasons when he's dealt - that tells me enough. The fact that they still haven't moved him says a lot. Doubtful his complaint will have much impact when he's dealt for some scrubs. He'll just prove why few want him.

  7. Sickels gave him a grade of C in the 2005 handbook. In the BA Handbook for 2005, Spears was Baltimore's 10th ranked prospect. They suggest he profiles as a number two hitter and could steal 15-20 bases. Works the count & gets on base??? Must be a misprint..
  8. Patterson got dealt cause he can't hit or take a pitch, and moving Sosa was a good move.
  9. A lot of teams are in big trouble if they have one major injury.
  10. How much are they spending on pitching?? About $45 - 50 million?? That has to be one of the highest amounts in baseball. I'm guessing top 3. The Yankees are obviously #1.
  11. Not to start a huge debate on comparisons between Neifi and Fontenot, but Fontenot is a much better all around hitter than Neifi, IMO. Neifi is better defensively. Based on organizational philosophies, Neifi is a tools guy and Fontenot isn't. Neifi is good with the leather and can switch hit and doesn't strike out much. Fontenot is not as good with the leather, draws too many walks and strikes out more often than Neifi. Fontenot makes more happen when he does put a bat on the ball, however. Fontenot isn't quite the second coming of Mark Bellhorn, but he's not that far off. Dusty had no use for a guy like Bellhorn. This organization just doesn't put any value on the ability to work the count and draw the occasional walk to get guys 90 feet closer to home. Bellhorn has power which little Mike doesn't. Without the power, Bellhorn has no value either. How much power can one expect from a utility infielder? Given the current roster the Cubs have, would you rather have a sub .300 OBP/slick fielding utility infielder, or would you rather have a .340+ OBP/decent fielding utility infielder? Who's this .340 obp utility infielder you speak of?
  12. Crap. Why not keep him on the bench, spot him into action once in a while to give Murton a break against some right handers, take a chance that he'll perform well and build his value up ahead of the trade deadline? because that would be the smart move. we've got to make room for marquis grissom to play way too much, you know. Smart IF Corey produces. Huge if there.... $3 million or so is a lot of money for .215/.254/.602.... I highly doubt Corey ever gets it going w/ the Cubs again, but wish him the best. Seems like a good kid.
  13. Why would the Orioles want Barrett when they already have two catchers in Hernandez and Lopez? Also signing over thirty catchers to three year deals is not usually a good idea. Forgot they got Hernandez. Three way trade then. Seriously tho, the Cubs getting Tejada just ain't happening. Thus the :)
  14. Give me Molina over Barrett and package Barrett for Tejada. :) Catcher's the most important defensive position on the field, and I prefer someone who can really defend. Of course, it's nice if they can hit over .260.
  15. Can agree w/ goony & UK on Hendry's general view towards obp. He'll take the .300 and .340 guy over the .275 & .355 guy. However, I think the acquisition of Lawton shows that Hendry does value the walk @ the top of the order. Lawton was .273 & .380 @ the time of the trade.
  16. Then why didn't Hendry keep him and not the troublemaker? Hendry f'd up. Must have got too fascinated w/ the walk or something. Yeah, as if that's anywhere close to reality. Do you think Hendry values obp whatsoever??

  18. Reggie Jackson was great in the World Series (.357/.457/.755). However, his career ALCS numbers are terrible (.227/.298/.380). So he produced when it mattered most, which is "clutch." I'm sure there are some pitchers who have been dominant in the playoffs. I could be wrong, but didn't Bob Gibson, Sandy Kofaux, and Whitey Ford have real good playoff numbers????
  19. If you don't believe there's such a thing as a clutch player, you must not watch much sports, and you clearly didn't play many either. I watch a lot of sports and have played plenty in my time and I don't believe there is a "clutch player." The numbers don't bear that out. If being "clutch" is an ability, then "clutch players" would have good numbers in "clutch" situations from year to year or at least numbers that are consistent with their career numbers. They do not. You don't consider Mariano Rivera, MJ, Reggie Jackson aka MISTAH OCTOBAH or Larry Bird as clutch??
  20. Sure, unless he spends his spare time as Stretch Armstrong. Knees don't that bend that way and Walker was not out of position when he rec'd the feed at 2B. Plus, I vividly remember Grudzielanek having two injury plagued seasons with the Cubs in similar flukish type manners. Doesn't equate to the fact he's injury prone or what not, just bad luck that can reverse as Mark was healthy last year. Well, I think we can agree that Grudz is better built than Walker, but perhaps you're right. However, I still stand by the Cubs being better off w/ Grudz.
  21. The improved morale really helped results form 2004 to 2005. If Walker hurt the team's morale, and thus hurt their chances, a less stupid GM would have chosen to stay with that gutty team guy Grudz when he had the chance instead of resigning Walker. Yep, should have kept Grudz. Too bad Hendry went the Moneyball route. :( yep, grudz really eclipsed walker with his offensive prowess. Well Grudz had 156 hits & 26 walks last year compared to Walker's 121 & 31, and superior defense should count for something. Grudz also played in 27 more games. Walker was far superior offensively last season. I know. He would have kept Neifi off the field. That blasted Walker, getting leg-whipped and missing time. He and Prior definitely deserve blame for missing time. Would Grudz have got hurt in a similar situation??
