  1. you honestly think that getting ONE guy back is going to turn the second worst offense in baseball to an offense capable of contending for a world series? i'd trade all the players and contracts in the marlins system for all the players and contracts in the cubs system. they've almost buried themselves this year, but i think they can be a playoff team next year, w/ a major personnel move or two. floria otoh is nowhere close.
  2. well then pierre should lose his starting job w/ his sub-.580 OPS. i hope so. trade hill for craig wilson and move jj to cf. wow, you turned on pierre quickly. he's choking. this isn't like being in florida where 3 fans show up for your games & 2 read the sports page. cub fans give a crap. it's a bad fit. time to move on.

  4. so much for accountability. .602 ops. that's ok corey. you get the starting job. baseball players aren't robots. sometimes a change of scenery can be beneficial. corey got 170 ab's in the bottom of the order last year, and sucked there too. thanx for sucking as a cub, bud.
  5. Slick, Florida's apparently on the verge of dealing off Willis. Florida has no chance of contending any time soon. That rotation is very thin. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I don't recall Florida ever gutting payroll like this. This is Tampa-like. Poo poo this if you want, but if Prior & Lee return the Cubs can contend. Lets remember the 2 most valuable Cubs aren't playing.
  6. I criticized Murton, Cedeno, Pierre & Walker earlier in this thread. Hill & Guz gave the Cubs little chance to win tho...
  7. that's what it says on their world series trophies probably - you kids are a disgrace. this is a discussion about 2006. I wouldn't call the Marlins awful. And they are a whole lot more fun to watch than the Cubs right now. Those kids are playing for their major league careers and they are all getting quality major league experience that will be quite beneficial when Florida adds role players to turn the team into another potential World Series champion in a small handful of years. You wouldn't want Hanley Ramirez, Jeremy Hermida, Josh Willingham, Dan Uggla on your team? While the Cubs continue spinning their wheels in mediocrity, Florida will rebuild and crush the Cubs in a few years. Heck, they're crushing the Cubs now. They aren't going to make much noise w/ that itty bitty budget of their's. Florida might not even win 50 games this year. The Cubs are probably in for a poor season, but Lee's return should push them over 70 wins, at least. If Prior's back, 75+. Woohoo. :) What? Thats not even good. Thats like saying you'll settle for 7-9 every season with your football team. Its better than being 4-12 right? Well except that 4-12 team might turn it around the next year and win the Super Bowl. I'd rather we bomb and get a better draft pick, shake up the organization...drop some players...etc. Being mediocre is exactly whats wrong with this team. And fans, like you, who are happy with a 70 win season is exactly what we don't need. What you failed to mention is dropping down to a $15 million budget. Baker might win 1 game out of 162 w/ that. I'm confused...shouldn't they be commended for doing so much with so little? no. they should leave florida. ok leaving now. :)
  8. Honestly, I'd rather watch a bunch of minimum base salary guys hustling their butts off and playing sound, fundamental baseball than watch a bunch of overpaid millionaires quit running half way down the first base line on a routine groundout or getting caught off base on a routine fly ball. There is certainly something to be said about trading your top players for a school bus full of minor league prospects. I like that option over trading your top player for a career platoon 2nd baseman and a couple of never were minor leaguers while paying his entire salary to play for someone else. My big problem w/ both Florida teams is that they've quit funding their teams. Like I said earlier in the thread the Marlins need to move... I gotta go workout. Go Cubs!

  10. yes. perhaps they should just lose every game tho.. :?

While the Cubs continue spinning their wheels in mediocrity, Florida will rebuild and crush the Cubs in a few years. Heck, they're crushing the Cubs now. Its really the only way (and the best way) for the team to eventually field a championship contender. They trade away all their quality veterans they no longer can pay for, stock up on young talent, groom 'em, and when its all set and ready, stock up on some free agent role players and make a run. Its allowed them to steal away 2 World Series trophies in little over a decade of existence. Considering how small market the team is, its pretty darn impressive. It certainly is more impressive than the wheel of mediocrity that is turned every year here in Chicago. Every year we trade away promising talent from our farm system, stock up on mediocre free agents over the hill and past a prime that wasn't...and well, you know the rest. The Cubs were a Bartman interference away from taking it in 2003. Huzienga spent like a fiend in 1997. Iirc they spent like crazy on free agents. The Trib would never allow that.

  13. that's what it says on their world series trophies probably - you kids are a disgrace. this is a discussion about 2006. the organization you call a disgrace has won 2 of the last 8 world series. I'm sure you would have called the 1998 team a disgrace as well. unlike the cubs, the marlins have a plan and they stick to it. this year's team is not good, but they have a future. the cubs future is more mediocrity perhaps a future in san antonio.. you're taking what I wrote out of context.
  14. You dismiss is out of hand saying it would have been unpopular here ... hindsight works both ways. It's pretty easy to say they should have found someone better to pitch for them ... I was pretty concerned about the pitching coming into the season and supported the Rusch signing cause the Cubs needed something. He's been awful tho. :( I wish they would have pulled off a deal for someone like Derek Lowe, who was supposedly on the block. As for unpopular here, the majority tends to lean towards more hitting. If Murton & Hill were dealt for some pitching, I think the majority would have been ticked. jmo

  16. His April appearance was his best right?? Kinda went downhill from there.
  17. Who should have been starting instead of Hill and Guzman? I've seen the stat that the Cubs have gone 1-15 in the "#5 starter position" ... but I honestly don't know how that #5 position was computed. I think the 1 win was Rusch vs. the Pirates. ETA: to change the verb tense re who should have been starting They should have traded some of the kids for a starter or signed someone. This would have been real unpopular tho, and the Cubs would have been criticized for wasting money or never giving the kids a chance. I'm basically taking the often heard "give the kids a chance" theory to task. The Cubs can't do the things Oakland and Atlanta can cause they don't draft well. Your last point is one that will get little to no argument. This was debated often last year when Baker kept going to the vets instead of the kids, and was one of the things I was hoping to elicit some discussion on. The Cubs farm system just can't be depended on. I think Guzman will turn out to be good, but I'm losing faith in Murton & Cedeno. Hill might be good on a small market team...

  19. What's florida's record? against the $95 mil cubs? pretty darn good. and despite the 80 mil difference in payroll, the cubs are only four games ahead of the marlins. you know what i meant and you're making no sense. It's hard to criticize Florida?? LOL. florida & their kids are awful. the organization is a disgrace. Florida should be moved to a better market.
  20. It's another thing entirely to post an entirely misleading stat, implying that Ronnie's performance in May has somehow been acceptable. Don't recall citing Cedeno as the MVP, just stating that it's hard to say a guy has disappeared over a stretch when he has as many hits as the team leader over the defined time period. Plenty of blame to go around, hardly fair to pin it on two guys just because they are "rookies". it was primarily pinned on 4 guys. that 0-7 of hill & guzman really hurts, especially considering hill was supposed to be quite good.
  21. omg you're trying to embarrass people!
  22. What's florida's record? Good night for cedeno & murt. Good to see.
  23. where would thome or glaus play on the cubs? prior to 06, lee was one of the most durable guys in the game. you might have something w/ vasquez. who did the sox give up to get him? El Duque, Luis Vizcaino, and Chris Young(who is comparable to Pie). hmmmm, pass. not nearly as good as Kenny's loazia for contreras trade.
