  1. :-)) Nate McLouth plays for Atlanta.
  2. What makes you think that? I would think the Pirates would have asked for a lot to trade a 27-year old CF coming off a breakout season to a division rival. But they'll trade us Ramirez without thinking twice? And we are not a rival of the Pirates. The Pirates don't have rivals. Um. That's a horrible comparison. Gary Gaetti didn't have nearly the career that Edmonds had.
  3. Well, I would only have considered Edmonds if he was willing to sign an affordable deal. I wouldn't have given him 5 mil or anything like that. I think you're missing my point here. If Edmonds refused to sign cheap enough to keep DeRosa, then screw him. I'm just saying if we had the chance to keep both of them, I'd jump all over it. And the Pirates probably don't care about trading within the division. It's not like they plan on competing or anything. And they had no problem sending Ramirez and Lofton our way. Either way, McLouth and Sanchez are just a couple examples. If you were to say that there isn't a single good outfielder or infielder in all of baseball that we could acquire, that would not be true. No use splitting hairs over a couple names I threw out there. Plus, if the Pirates aren't gonna trade with us, then all the "Sanchez to the Cubs" rumors need to stop right now.
  4. I would have to disagree. The difference between Soriano hitting a solo homer or a 3-run home can be the difference between winning and losing a close game. And if your leadoff man gets on base an extra time or two, that can be the difference in a close game, as well. Not to mention, considering our pitching, most of our games are pretty close. so batting 1st in the batting order prevents you from hitting 3 run homers? It strongly decreases the odds of it happening. I think it's impossible to argue otherwise. The bottom of the lineup is going to be on base much less often than the top. EDIT: And have you noticed that since Soriano was moved down, both of his home runs have come with people on base? And that they made a large impact on the game?
  5. Possible, but not certain. I'm just saying I would try it, if anything, just to eliminate it as a possibility. It's not like it would cause us to lose games that we would have otherwise won. The team we're sending out there right now isn't gonna be doing any winning anytime soon.
  6. I bet Edmonds would have signed for 1-2 mil just to stay with the Cubs. I'm sure we could have snagged Nate McLouth pretty easily and played Kosuke in right. Or, we could have moved DeRosa to the outfield and gone after an infielder (Sanchez or whoever).
  7. I know that it's not going to happen, and I know that Soriano is a horrible second baseman. I guess what I'm saying is that we need offense so bad, I would almost entirely disregard defense.
  8. I am agreeing with you, just not about that. I'm agreeing with you that it is unlikely that Edmonds would have repeated his 2008 performance. How would he fit in? Um... the same way he fit in last year. In center. Why would Fukudome be getting a chance in center? The only reason he plays there is because we signed a right fielder. Otherwise, Fukudome would still be playing his natural (and best) position. I don't think it would have been silly to resign Edmonds. If it didn't work out, we would have the extra cash to go out and get someone during the season. Well, obviously. I think the major concern there (at least for me) was defense. With Soriano in left, Dunn in right, and a right fielder playing center... that would be the worst defensive outfield in baseball. Yeah. I agree with all this. The fact that Hendry thought Bradley was what he was looking for is ridiculous. It's not even that Bradley has underperformed. It's that even if he was hitting well, he still wouldn't fit the criteria that Hendry was looking for.
  9. I think I would rather see Fox play every day than trade for a bat. I'd play Fonz at second because he can't possibly cost us more runs there than in left. And if he was really that bad there, we can always move him back. I would probably start trying it like, nowish. That way we have time before the deadline to see how it works and decide if we need another bat or not. Fuku - CF Theriot - SS Lee - 1B Ramirez - 3B Fox - LF Soriano - 2B Bradley - RF Soto - C On paper, that's pretty unstoppable. No real holes to speak of.
  10. I would have to disagree. The difference between Soriano hitting a solo homer or a 3-run homer can be the difference between winning and losing a close game. And if your leadoff man gets on base an extra time or two, that can be the difference in a close game, as well. Not to mention, considering our pitching, most of our games are pretty close.
  11. Looking back... I would probably still take Abreu and DeRosa over Dunn and Fontenot. But actually, if it had been up to me at the time, I would have brought Edmonds back, kept DeRosa, and then used the spare cash to upgrade somewhere else. Whether or not Edmonds would have panned out, we'll never know. BUT after the 2008 season, if it had been my call, that's what I would have done.
  12. The sad part is that despite the Cards having all these gaping holes and problems, they're still ahead of us. The difference is that our gaping holes take up half of our payroll, whereas theirs are very inexpensive.
  13. I have people telling me all the time that when Soriano is hitting well, he's a great lead-off hitter. My point is that it doesn't matter if he is slumping or if he's hot, he still should not hit leadoff. That's because if the rest of your lineup is awesome, then realistically it doesn't matter much. People are gonna knock in runs either way. However, if your offense isn't scoring runs, then the lineup itself is more crucial because a run here or there can make a big difference. IMHO.
  14. Well, yeah. But that's what people said before last year, too. I think the same could also be said about Milton Bradley after he lead the world in OPS. Like I said, we caught lightning in a bottle last season with Edmonds. It was highly unlikely for that to be repeated. I really don't get the point of this post. You just said the same thing that I just quoted, in nearly the exact same words even. Honestly, I agree with your point. I just think we should have given Edmonds the chance to show us that he was done, rather than assuming it. I mean, if we had signed him to an affordable deal, the worst case scenario would not be so bad. We would end up releasing him, trading him, or DFAing him. However, the potential upside would have been very large.
  15. The amazing part is that it doesn't seem like that long ago that the Cubs had one of the top farm systems in baseball. Then again, if I recall correctly, that was when we had guys like Patterson, Dubois, and Pie who all never panned out. So it wasn't actually one of the best, it was just rated as such.
  16. Screw Bradley, Dunn, and Ibanez. Abreu signed for 5 mil for Christ sakes. We could have KEPT DeRosa while still acquiring our impact lefty bat. Not to mention, a lefty bat that actually hits well left-handed. Discuss.
  17. Well, yeah. But that's what people said before last year, too. I think the same could also be said about Milton Bradley after he lead the world in OPS.
  18. Edmonds/DeRosa > Bradley/Fontenot I just wish we never let Edmonds go in the first place, that way him being out of shape wouldn't be an issue. I guess he wasn't left-handed enough. I'm probably one of the only guys who has an Edmonds Cubs jersey. Anyone else? I still wear it to every game I go to.
  19. I have tried as hard as I can to remain optimistic and positive... but I think this might be the end for me, guys. I just really don't think this team has what it takes. Even if we win the division, it'll be another three-and-out. The worst part is that there is little chance that we'll be better in the next couple years. I really hope I'm wrong. I would probably give up right about now and start selling anyone we can, though. Alot of people on this forum say that we have nobody that we can trade, but that's not true.
  20. Please Heilman, please. Just get out of this inning an I won't hate you anymore. As much.
  21. I can't believe Soriano caught that. I had my finger on the trigger ready to rant.
  22. Yeah. It was great to see him stick with it tonight.
