    One thing that Lou said when the season started was that he thought the first 16 games or so (about one tenth of the season, he said) was a good time to play around with some different things and try to figure out what might work best. Today is the Cubs' 16th game. Certainly the injury to Soriano has shaken things up a bit, but Lou may be getting close to figuring out exactly how he wants to use everybody, at least for the foreseeable future. Perhaps we'll start seeing more of a "regular" lineup in the next week or so, or at least when Soriano gets settled back in instead of seeing guys like Theriot, DeRosa, Murton and Jones bounce around the diamond. If and when the dust settles, Jones may be the odd man out in the OF and end up getting shopped at that point.

    When all (or most) of the management people from 2005 are gone, I'm sure the reaching-out process will begin.

    i see no evidence that leads me to believe that this is anything but a slow start. if he's got a 5+ era at the end of the season, then i'll concede he's had a bad year. but please don't imply that a 25 year-old pitcher who's done nothing but be very good is on the downside of his career. i generally agree, but not completely with the bolded. his (over)use over the last few years has been well documented and his walk rate has risen over that span. i wouldn't say there is no reason for concern, but i would say it's minimal. i still think he'll be fine and people are probably jumping on him a bit too much, but i wouldn't say it's a foregone conclusion. i worry there might be an injury.

    our......he could have not walked two people. call me crazy. I totally agree with not walking people. I also think it was obvious Eyre was running out of gas and under normal circumstances, had others been available, he would have been pulled earlier in the inning. Again, credit Cox for bringing in the RH pinch hitters because he knew the Cubs bullpen situation. The ball to Izturis should have ended the inning without a run scoring; He was too lackadaisical. Why are we crediting Cox for bringing in RH bats to face a LHP? It wasn't a difficult call. Especially considering that's pretty much all he had on his bench because he started all of his lefties. It's not rocket science, nor is the Cubs' biggest problem...WALKS!

    Wait till he has a week without a homer, and a couple of errors. He'll be on the block again. My guess is it will be after he doesn't hit any "clutch" homeruns against the Red Sox this weekend.

    Unfortunately, there's not really anything they can do before the May 1st game. I don't see any reasonable option to call-up for Sunday. They can't have all these guys go on short rest. And I don't even see anybody who should be brought up to help out the bullpen. The pitching staff is just going to have to get through this stretch until Guzman can be brought back. I understand that. But it just illustrates that Guzman should have been in the rotation from the beginning. Call it hindsight if you want, but making that decision based on Spring Training was stupid once you consider the history and the potential for the two.

    I made me feelings well known in this thread, but I'll simply reiterate that Miller can't be replaced in the rotation soon enough.

    The bad part is Guzman has to stay in Iowa for 10 days unless someone gets injured. I guess they could still put Soriano on the DL. Exactly. Or Miller could have a mysterious injury. does it have to be a pitcher that get's DL'd or just anybody on the 25?

    Wow...Murton, Theriot, Cedeno and Pie all playing at the same time. We're not in 2003-2006 anymore.

    I also think the more time Murton gets in RF, the closer Jones gets to being traded. I have to think Murton is getting time there so he can stay there if/when Jones is traded. Soriano in left, Pie in center, Murton in right. That does cause a problem with what to do with Floyd though. He probably can't play RF.

    I hope he pitches great. It would be a nice problem to have. If he does something like your scenario though (5 innings/2 runs) it wouldn't complicate things to me. He would have to be very good today and next week for me to consider keeping him there over Guzman.

    If that's the plan, fine by me. I won't hold my breathe. it's the only thing that makes sense I guess I've become a little cynical with this organization. I'll believe it when I see it.
