  1. I was a big critic of the deal as well. DeRosa has been far better than I thought so far. Still not sure about three-years, but I was certainly wrong about what he would provide this year.
  2. i have no problem with sending theriot down if it's to call up cedeno. however, if that's the case they still need to do something with jones and/or izturis. so they can bring up a releiver.
  3. seriously, even if it's just to DFA him, please get it done. there are too many roster spots being wasted right now, and he is one of them.
  4. Without an external offensive upgrade (i.e. a trade) I don't think they really have a chance. Stranger things have happened, but I'd be really surprised. This offensive upgrade most likely needs to be in CF (doubtful), RF or SS and preferably before Lee misses five games with his suspension. I don't think it's likely, unfortunately. Making moves like calling up Murton, calling up Soto and maybe calling up Cedeno are reasonable internal moves that should probably be made, but I don't think it would be enough.
  5. I liked him two years ago and I still do. Without knowing much about his injuries, my initial reaction is to say bring him in and put him in CF. Pie takes over full time there next year. I'm guessing Bradley can play pretty much every day between RF and CF.
  6. way to go, sammy. i was even happier for him than i thought i would be. i'm glad he did it against the cubs so we could see it. good for him.
  7. This doesn't make the team better in the short term, IMO. That's what I don't get. My only hope is that it's setting up another deal for a RF or SS. I won't get my hopes up though. The only good out of it is getting "something" for a player that was likely gone at the end of the year anyway. I just don't understand why they brought in another back up catcher. I think people that are clinging to Bowen's high OBP from 2007 so far are going to be disapointed. I'd be shocked if it stays anywhere near that level considering his high BABIP and his past.
  8. that doesn't make it right. i'm not against the move, per say. but i am against trading someone just to get rid of him if he still has some value.
  9. i'm not sure why people are mentioning "good OBP" and "offensive upside" with Bowen. I'm not seeing it. he doesn't look terrible, mind you, but i don't see anything to be excited/hopeful about. on a side note, Bowen and i attended the same high school. woot!
  10. When you look back (not just 2007), I don't think those numbers bare out. I tend to lean toward coincidence.
  11. My initial reaction is to think this is an ok move IF it's a precurser to another move to upgrade offensively at SS or RF, as a few others have said. They really can't afford to give up offense for defense at this point.
  12. my guess is if the Cubs are taking a catcher in return, it's because they don't want to call up Soto. That, or one of Soto/Hill/Bowan is going to be involved in a subsequent deal. I'm just guessing, of course.
  13. this is a message board. people over react. how is this suprising to you?
  14. Yeah, this is a bunch of crap but I'm not really interested in getting into it now that he's off the team. If you think a few past balls a year is worth having a black hole in your lineup, good luck with that. Yeah, I think a lot of people that hate Barrett are going to end up missing him. I hope to be wrong, of course.
  15. he's the greatest Cub player i've watched in my lifetime. i'm definitely pulling for him, but i hope it doesn't cost the Cubs a game. most of my friends are rooting against him tho. honestly, it surprises me a little that so many Cubs fans dislike him so much after what he did for this team. why let a stupid mistake at the end of his time there ruin everything? oh well.
  16. When you're talking about a 25 year old who put up respectable numbers the last two years, not to mention his minor league career (better than the guy(s) replacing him) who has struggled for about 100 sporadic at-bats...yes. If we were the Devil Rays or 20 games out, then sure. Instead, we're a team that has both a legit shot to win its division and a fairly weak, RH-heavy lineup. Given Murton's performance at the plate, in the field, and on the bases, Floyd is and has been a better option. It's up to Murton to hit his way into the lineup, even if he has to do that from the bench. It's not up to the manager to continue to start him until he does that, especially if it means a far more productive bat is on the bench. You mean like Jones has? What has Murton been doing the last two years that you wouldn't consider "hitting his way into the lineup"? I love double standards.
  17. The thing is, if you are going to use that stat, shouldn't Rex rate high there? Everybody talks about what a winner he is, how much confidence they have in him and all this other stuff. You would think going to the super bowl despite being such a terrible QB would add something to his intangible quotient. This is one of the things that got to me (sorry, i'm a little late getting to this article). King went on about how wins were so important in his ranking and then put one of the winningest QB's (Grossman) at/near the bottom.
  18. When you're talking about a 25 year old who put up respectable numbers the last two years, not to mention his minor league career (better than the guy(s) replacing him) who has struggled for about 100 sporadic at-bats...yes.
  19. i'd certainly be interested, depending on what's coming back. DeRosa has exceeded my expectations for him so far, but i'd like to see the Cubs get out of the last two years of that contract. Theriot and/or Fontenot can cover 2B with the hope that Patterson is the future long-term solution. having said that, i wouldn't just give him away because i think he has some value as a utility guy who can play RF, 2B, 1B and 3B if/when Patterson is ready. even if he is a little over-paid for that role.
  20. One of my favorite moments as a Cub fan. I was going to post this as a moment too. Although, he really shouldn't have even been hitting in that spot of the game, it worked out wonderfully and I went crazy.
