  1. Did Barrett catch all 15 innings last night? I couldn't watch the game. I guess Blanco starting is a good possibility, though I had assumed that would be tomorrow with the day game after night game. I guess it makes just as much sense to start him tonight and Barrett tomorrow.
  2. I wonder what kind of lineup we'll see with a LHP on the mound. I guess Jones will probably still be in CF as there isn't really a RH option there. Hopefully Murton in RF, DeRosa at 2B and Theriot at SS. No Izturis, please.
  3. Youre right. It does give us a better chance to win. The only reason why you would go with Pie and Murton over Jones and Floyd is defense and I think right now we can use every part of offense we can get. Since when are Jones and Floyd automatic offensive improvements over Murton? They are each still sub 800 OPS OF with checkered pasts (Jones usually isn't very good and Floyd usually can't stay healthy). Lets completely ignore Murtons sub 700 OPS though. I think he's talking beyond their small sample of ABs from this year. Three year splits: Floyd: 261/347/466 Murton: 303/370/462 Floyd's number have been trending down as he's getting old. Murton is on the rise. I still fail to see how Floyd is the sure-fire better option both long-term and short-term.

  5. Which is one of the reasons why this article was very irritating to read.... Does Dave van Dyck know what he's talking about in general? All he did was casually mention that DeRosa has started in right before-I don't think that really says much about what's going to happen against a LHP. It's not like Lou told him that was an option against a left-hander. I know we've discussed this before, but people have been saying this about Murton's playing time since the season started. Don't worry, it's early. He'll get the majority of the time. Floyd is just hot. It was just an isolated occurrence (DeRosa's start). I think there is reason for concern that Murton is the odd man out at this point. There is a simple solution to getting an "everyday" lineup. Theriot at SS. Murton/Floyd platooning in RF. Jones in CF. Send Pie down (if he's not going to play regularly) and bring in a RH who can play CF and platoon with Jones.
  6. do you want to win or develop young players? Both Jones and Floyd are performing well. You seriously want to take them out and put Pie and Murton every day? Murton and his every game double-play? And Pie who's lost at teh plate? Do you not see we're on a great winning streak? Or do you prefer losses? I really hate this old arguement. These two things (winning and developing players) are not mutually exclusive. In the abstract maybe that is true. But specific to Pie and this Cubs team, is it? In other words, can the Cubs win and afford to deal with Pie's growing pains compared to the production expected out of those 'veterans' in front of him on the depth chart? I think so, and would advocate trading Jones to create the open spot. But there are plenty of folks who would lessen the Cubs chances of winning with Pie in the everyday lineup over Jones/Floyd/Murton. I think you can have Pie in CF on a regular basis as long as you don't have another black-hole like Izturis or Cedeno in the lineup at the same time. Also, I expect Pie's bat to come around, as it always has at each level once he's had a chance to adjust.

  8. Oh yeah, I also wanted to mention my dissapointment in DeRosa starting in RF yesterday. I'm not sure why Lou is so down on Murton right now. I hope that wasn't a sign of things to come. They are better off with Theriot starting at SS with DeRosa at 2B.
  9. Murton has absolutely nothing to prove or gain in the minors at this point. I'd like to see him play more, but with Floyd doing reasonably well I'll try not to complain too much. If anyone is sent down, it should be Pie. The problem then becomes that there isn't really a second option for CF, aside from Soriano sliding over. He certainly could do that to fill in for Jones in a pinch while Pie is called up if Jones were injured or something. The best option is probably to send down Pie and try to find a RH option to platoon with Jones in CF. As for Lou getting sick of the same old question, he's going to have to get used to it. It was only a matter of time before that started happening. If it wasn't the OF it would be something else. It's a very large market team. What would he expect?
  10. why stop there? how about "Cubs Sweep Red Sox in 2007 World Series" "Baby Steps" By Dr. Leo Marvin
  11. I formally request that NomarSammy start a thread titled "1st place by June 1". Thanks a bunch.
  12. yay floyd. thanks for not sucking today if you're going to play instead of murton.
  13. more 3-0 swinging... edit: nevermind, gameday is lame.
  14. good, we have another excuse to use when Murton doesn't play for two weeks. I'm sure he'll be in the starting lineup once he heals up. :^o
  15. Not necessarily. He's started in RF as well - in case Jones is the one off to the bench. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA........good one.
  16. It's a matter of days before Floyd and/or Jones play themselves out of the lineup - a la Izturis. Weep not for Murton. People have been saying this for weeks. What about Floyd's 301 OPS in the last week is keeping him in front of Murton?
  17. If he's really only going to play against LHP, then AAA is the best option. I'm really just shocked (I don't know why) that anyone would consider only playing Murton against LHP with this roster. Shocked. I shouldn't be surprised (and to some extent, I'm not) but it's absurd.
  18. It is a start. that's the kind of reasoning that leads to people getting excited about back to back winning seasons. correcting one mistake does not excuse another.
  19. You've been saying that for weeks. I'm sorry to call you out because I know you're not advocating it, but I'm just sick of reading people's excuses. There is no rational explination for keeping Murton on the bench at this point. None. It's all just lame excuses. First it was Murton is stuggling. Then it was riding the hot hand. Then it was Murton is the emergency catcher. Then it was playing the matchup. Now it's Murton can't play against RHP, but don't worry........Floyd isn't going to play anymore. This is just an anomoly.
  20. CubColtPacer, you got some 'splainin to do. right-handed pitcher. From what has been said, normally Soriano and Pie would be in there and Jones would get the start and not Floyd. Today, they get a chance to both be together. When Jones/Murton/Floyd share one OF spot, it will likely be Jones against right-handers and Murton against left-handers, with the only chance for Floyd to start is days like this where Soriano or Pie sit. That's what I was saying before-and btw, I'm not in complete agreement with it-I want Floyd to get some starts, but I want Murton to play more than he has. When are you going to run out of excuses for this? It's always going to be something, just like with Dusty.
  21. Don't worry guys, Murton will get his starts. Floyd won't be playing anymore. Petition to ban rolley eyes so I don't use one here. I'm starting to hate you, Lou.
  22. You pretty much just summarized the last five years in four sentences.
  23. I'm guessing the reason now is that Pie is up for his defensive prowess in CF, so that only leaves 1 spot for JJ, Floyd, and Murton (in that order, I think). But I'd like to know why Murton is 3rd in the pecking order there. I don't think he's 3rd in the pecking order. My guess is that while this situation continues that Murton will get the 2nd most starts there. Which will be only against LHP, while Jones starts in CF those days. YAY!!
