  1. i said no because i don't really get into "booing". it just seems pointless to me. i will say that there will be a part of me wanting him to fail misserably right from the start so that Lou doesn't stick with him. as mentioned already, the worst case is he starts off moderately productive and Lou rides him the rest of the season despite him actually sucking.
  2. I'd like to formally retract this post. Thank you.
  3. Still waiting for Marquis to get the Rich Hill treatment, Lou.
  4. Speaking just for myself, the problem I have is with the (seemingly) prevailing assumption that Pie is the solution, and all that's needed is time and opportunity. Nowhere do I see anyone contemplating the possibility that the solution to the problem of who to play in CF against RHP is neither Pie, nor Edmonds, nor Johnson. Now perhaps given 5 starts a week, Pie could become this year's Pedroia or Tulowitzki. It's certainly possible. More possible, IMO, is that despite the defensive advantages he can offer, Pie remains a liability for a contending team. The guy's just not good at all right now offensively, and expecting significant improvement is really nothing more than an act of blind faith that any minute now, his MiLB success will translate to MLB success. Maybe it will, but maybe it won't. If nothing else, one thing we should recognize about Lou is that he's not one to sit on his hands and hope what isn't working suddenly will start to work. This doesn't make sense. If Pie is a liability, then what the hell is Johnson? He's worse than Pie against RHP. Edmonds is likely to be equal to or worse than Pie.
  5. Being a formal Cardinal doesn't mean anything to me. He's old and declining (rapidly). That's the problem. I couldn't possibly care less about what team(s) he's played for. At some point Hendry needs to force Felix on Lou. I don't think he'll continue to let Reed get dominated by RHP, so don't give him the option of having someone like Edmonds at his disposal. Force him to go to Pie eventually.
  6. You act as if this team can't win with Felix. That's nonsense. Thats not it at all. I just think that Cubs have put winning a World Series in front of developing Felix. I don't know if this is the right move or not. I not sure if I like the idea of signing Edmonds. Felix needs ABs and Lou is not going to play him then only way he will get ABs is in the minors. sorry to pick on you but i see this all the time and it drives me insane. saying you are putting a world series infront of developing a player is a bs cop-out. these things are not mutually exclusive and its incredibly inaccurate to say they are, particulary with the way the Cubs offense has produced. they can have Felix in CF against most/all RHP and still wait for him to adjust while still winning. saying felix needs to go to Iowa to get at-bats is equally insane in my opinion. he's done absolutely nothing but completely dominate PCL pitching the last two years. it's time for him to get a valid oppurtunity at the ML level to see if he can/will adjust, just like he did at every other level. Jim Edmonds may come in and put up better numbers than Felix against RHP in the short term (I doubt it), but it's still a poor strategy if the overall goal is to win championships (with an "s").
  7. jesus. this was stupid when i thought it was just writer speculation. if they are seriously considering this, they are dumber than i thought, and that's saying something.
  8. This would be an incredible waste of time and resources (not to mention Pie's talents). That probably means it will happen.
  9. they're going to have to stick with Marquis for at least one more start. the numbers just don't work out otherwise with Hill unavailable until May 14th. they might as well let him start Saturday the 10th and pitch Gallagher or Marshall on Monday the 12th (in Lieber's spot). Hill could then pitch on the 15th in Marquis' spot.
  10. gee i wonder who/what would giving felix that impression??? i think it's interesting that this is Hendry, not Lou. i'm still curious to know how Hendry feels about Pie's usage. i think he really wanted Pie to be the starter against all RHP, at a minimum. he passed up some trade oppurtunities to give Pie a chance this season and Lou won't play him (enough).
  11. Marquis' next start would have fallen on the 10th, I believe. What day was Hill optioned? Saturday, May 3? I guess that means he wouldn't be able to pitch for the Cubs again until the 14th? I don't think they'd do that anyway, I think they'll give him at least one more start in Iowa. Marshall may not be stretched out enough to start by the 12th. Gallagher threw 41 pitches yesterday, so I don't know if they'd run him out there on Saturday (in Marquis' spot). He could definitely start in Lieber's spot on the 12th. Either way, they're going to have an issue finding someone for either the 10th or the 12th. Maybe they will go with Marshall one of those days and have Lieber ready for long duty. What a mess.
  12. interesting that derosa is out again. i thought soto or ramirez would be good bets for a day off, but soriano makes sense too. i think i'd rather have derosa in LF instead of johnson though.
  13. every time i see this thread get bumped, i'm a little scared to open it. please don't let this happen.
  14. i wonder if soto will be rested with the day game after night game. i know there is an off day tomorrow, but Lou may want to rest him even though the Cubs will likely need his offense today. i guess i could understand either decision.
  15. i still don't see Soriano leading-off as a major issue with this team. it's certainly not ideal, but i don't think it's costing the Cubs runs. i do think Fukudome should be hitting 2nd. i've said before, my primary concern is getting the best hitters the most at-bats for the most part. Soriano is likely to end up as one of the more productive hitters on the team by the end of the season.
  16. i don't think anything should be out-right dismissed, but i don't see any way they would do that this year. he'll probably need to show he can make it through a full year of bullpen duty before he can convince anyone (including himself) that starting might be an option again. if he stays healthy all season and wants to try it, it might be an option next year.
  17. it's especially frustrating given Pie's history. he's always shown that given some time to adjust at a new level, he will. add to that the fact that Johnson sucks against RHP, and it's borderline criminal.
  18. interesting thought. i guess it depends on whether hendry prefers patience with prospects, or whether he's willing to throw in the towel on them when they struggle for five games, as seems to be the case with lou. my guess is that hendry would prefer that pie be playing most days, but he isn't about to tell piniella how to manage his ballclub. right. i'd like to be a fly on the wall if/when the topic of demoting Pie to carry 13 pitchers comes up between Lou and Jim. i really wanted to believe they weren't giving up on Pie when they brought in Keller, but i obviously have my doubts now. additionally, Marshall has options left correct? why not send him down to stretch him out instead of carrying 13 pitchers? i definitely agree with stretching him out and getting him in Marquis' spot, but let's be smart about it (for once).
  19. neither Theriot nor Cedeno should be expected to maintain their current numbers. however, Cedeno is much more likely to put up superior numbers over a full season. it's not a tough concept.
  20. well, i don't really fall into any of the options. we'll get a sizable amount between me, my wife and our two kids. our plan is to spend about half of it on home upgrades/vacation and put the other half into the kid's savings accounts.
