  1. I know I'd blow as a GM in today's market. Because I'd be scared any expensive free agent is going to turn bad, simply because I think most of the good ones already have been signed to long-term contracts. I cringe at the thought of signing a B.J. Upton or Albert Pujols and paying them for their great years of production on their previous team....only to see them perform well below expectations on mine. It's irrational, but that's why I hate high-end free agency. I'm much more comfortable doing what we have been doing the last few years, which is find some pretty solid middle guys who have a chance to exceed their contract.
  2. Can someone discuss Andrew Cashner when he pitches in San Diego and when he pitches elsewhere? I'm not great at breaking down all the numbers, but it seems like his value is elevated even more based on where he plays.
  3. They need to set the bar higher than that.
  4. The big questions are whether his power will grow as he matures (it should), and whether the defensive adjustments made against him this year will cause him to have a permanently crappy BABIP (they may). Would I be right in saying that as long as his power does mature a bit, that it will be more than OK to have a 30-homer, 40-double guy with an acceptable OBP and a bad batting average to go along with a solid glove in the field? Sort of a better version of Carlos Pena, since Rizzo doesn't strike out quite as much? I'd guess that's pretty much a floor for Rizzo at this point. Then I'll be happy. Pena probably wasn't the best comparison by me, since he's never even had 30 doubles in a season.

  6. Why do I look at Rizzo's 22 homers, 37 doubles and .324 on-base percentage (impressive considering he's hitting .230) and still think that his first full season in the majors hasn't been quite as horrific as many think? And, yes, I realize one of the answers is that I'm an idiot.
  7. Sort of agree, but I'd be a bit worried. He hasn't played the OF in a few years and wasn't very good when he did. Add in a few more knee surgeries and a couple years to his age, and it might not turn out great. If I was betting, I'd say he's going back to the Brewers on a one-year deal assuming they are interested and don't want to go with Morris at first next season. Don't they have one of their heralded prospects coming off ACL surgery to play 1B next year? Gamel maybe? I don't think they are counting on him anymore. It would be Hunter Morris if they decided to fill from within and not sign Hart. I'm not a huge Morris fan, so I'd think they'd want Hart back if they think he's reasonably healthy and will sign a one-year deal.

  9. The only thing I know or care to know about Donnie Murphy is that every time I check the box hoping it was Rizzo or Castro who accounted for our only run, I have to instead see that it was flipping Donnie Murphy.
  10. Haha. B.J. Upton is hitting .177/.266/.300. Sweet Jesus. Never understood why so many on here wanted to sign him. Because he's 27 and was good 4 of 6 seasons prior to this year? Yeah his previous 5 years he put up fWAR's of 3.1, 3.8, 3.8, 2.1, 4.8 and we had a clear opening(s) in the OF. It's weird, though. Because when you watched him play, he always seemed to not be very good and yet I'd come on here and see things like this. You're obviously right, but yet it seems so wrong.
  11. Not that I think he is going to get traded, but the deadline isn't until 3. You never know when they might just get offered enough.
  12. I can handle losing to good teams. I can't handle losing to a crappy Brewers team twice in one day.
  13. Segura's lucky hit didn't help either I guess we can take comfort in the fact that the only reason we scored two runs is that the Brewers pretty much gave them to us.
  14. I will also now take a two-run double from Ransom. No need to be greedy.
  15. If Castillo hits a two-run homer here, I don't know why, but I'll run through my streets naked.
  16. I have nothing against him as a human being and I'm quite sure he's a great person, but Keith Moreland makes me feel lethargic and sad about life when forced to listen to him.
  17. Wait. Heyman saying Cubs expected to pay "more than half" his salary. If we actually save more than 4 or 5 million on this, that's a huge win.
  18. I guess there's enough of a mix of smart over there along with the stupid that I had forgotten about/overlooked the stupid. NSBB has left me sheltered. Why is it wrong to place some value on a speed tool? It isn't, it's just that he had a really nice bunt one time and you can't count on that being a legit force of his game looking forward. Well, actually two nice bunts, but agreed.
  19. Wait. Isn't Kyle the one who gets our prospects into hot streaks when he thinks they suck? If it is, this is a good sign.
  20. My first thought is to put Edwards at No. 6. Olt not in top 10. This just got me excited. If Olt is not even in our top 10.....this farm system is real nice right now. But it's Kyle who said that Kyle seems like a good guy. I'm going to go with him on this because it makes me even more excited about our system.
