  1. The fact that something unlikely happened doesn't disprove that it was unlikely. Nate Silver estimates that the draw increased the U.S. team's odds of advancement from about 56% to about 65%. That sounds about right to me. Want to tell me that Nate Silver doesn't know the difference between 1 and 0? Since you've pretty much done nothing but act like a condescending jerk for the last page, I take joy in that. 9% isn't exactly nothing.
  2. It took me a second, but that's fantastic. http://drew3000.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/the-world-according-to-americans.jpg In our defense, we are #1.

  4. Wait, which ones are we?
  5. I promise, it's harder than it looks to be. if dave bolland can methodically knock a tiny puck off the skate of a goalie into the back of a tiny tiny goal with a stick in the time it takes one to blink while skating on a sheet of ice behind the goal and wearing bulky and awkward padding, some dude not wearing ice skates should be able to settle a ball RIGHT IN FRONT and put it into the back of a goal the size of a short bus without falling all over himself and totally screwing it up. maybe soccer players in general aren't good enough at their sport and need to practice more. maybe they should postpone the world cup until players can do that. You've obviously never kicked anything.
  6. You're not invited
  7. Also Brian McRae
  8. Not the end. The only people I would accept as the next manager are: Ryne Sandberg Andre Dawson Jim Riggleman Ron Santo George Bell Matt Murton Greg Maddux Anybody else will prompt an immediate "FIRE ____ (<--Whatever their name is)" thread from me. Addendum: I would give the following people maybe a month to prove themselves before I started said thread: Ernie Banks Sammy Sosa Mark Grace Mark Prior Kerry Wood Mark DeRosa Rick Wilkins Steve Buechele
  9. I knew a guy who was an MS-13 and he was [expletive] awesome! He was like 5'1" and completely insane but he seemed to like me so he was a barrel of freakin monkeys. My point, you may be wondering, is this...all the crackers in that clubhouse better watch it. The black guys too probably, I don't know.
  10. Vitters pedestrian professional production and horrible K/BB rate is the problem. The Cubs have promoted him so aggressively that they don't have the same benefit of time. If he stays around AA much longer and doesn't improve significantly, his value will plummet. As things stand now he hasn't come close to playing well enough to be a big trade chip. I agree, but I think he's going to be alright. He's struggled at every new level but then put up good numbers once he's adjusted. By the end of the season he'll have just turned 21 and if he's putting up good numbers at AA by then I don't think there's any reason to panic. But looking over his minor league numbers, he always does pretty pitifully when he's first promoted but he's adjusted to every level so far (excluding AA).
  11. That kind of research would take years, years that we don't have for the purposes of this game. What a stupid, stupid idea. I don't think you understand how a time machine works. It doesn't matter how long it takes to create. As soon as it's complete, just take it back to get Cobb and then come back to 2010. People may notice you're a little older, but it's not a big deal. Problem solved. Whatever happened, happened.
  12. Soriano is the only one that comes close to the type of hitter you're trying to describe. which doesn't bode well for vitters CubinNY being terrible at coming up with examples of the thing he's trying to describe is a dark omen for Vitters? It's looking like Vitters will never justify his #3 overall status, but I think he's too young to get too down on him.

  14. why? so you can see him on tv everyday? would you be equally content if there was a reality show about him or something? i don't understand why anyone would want someone they liked to manage the cubs if they thought they'd do a bad job (unless it was your dad or something and he could hook you up with tickets or tell you secrets about the players or whatever). Not a reality show, that's not the same thing. It would make me happy to see Sandberg out there in uniform every day. And I don't think he would be terrible. There are probably guys that would make our chances of winning a world series very very slightly better, but nostalgia trumps that for me. We're trying to get joy from watching guys we don't know play a game, it makes me feel ridiculous to try to be reasoned about it.

  16. Yeah, if a 20 year old isn't OPS'ing over 1.000 in his first month of AA then we might as well cut him. I don't think it's too absurd to question the future of Vitters. While he is still young, he hasn't exactly been outstanding. His 08 Boise and 09 Peoria numbers were good, but there's been a lot of mediocrity around that. It's not absurd to wonder if he'll be a good major leaguer, but it's pretty absurd to give up hope on a 20 year old that's struggling in his first month of AA. I don't see where anyone was giving up hope. Leave me alone
  17. This is one of those moments where I'm fine with letting my sentimental attachment to baseball overrule reasoned objections. I want Sandberg to manage the Cubs really bad.

  19. God love ya
  20. McCutchen is a better option than Kemp. My original outfield was really stupid.

  22. There are a couple people that seem genuinely upset about this. It was something I spent like 15 minutes entertaining myself with. However I realized my mistake of not including Heyward. I would definitely want Heyward. I acknowledged that Castro was a homer pick and that I don't care. I'm sure there are better MI combinations but I really like those two guys. I know the title is "best team" but I'm a rebel that doesn't even play by my own rules. With Wieters, I didn't pick Mauer because 37 is really old for a catcher. There might be better, younger choices than Wieters, but I couldn't think of any off the top of my head. So Wieters it was. And Wieters was actually a last minute substitution for Mauer. I know who Stanton is, and he'll probably be insanely awesome, but I'm a fanboy for Justin Upton. I tried to pick a decent amount of guys that will still be in their prime in 10 years. The way I saw it, having a team full of near 40 or 40+ year olds by the end of the 10 years is riskier than having a couple question marks. And as far as pitchers go, I wouldn't change any of them with any of the suggestions so far.
  23. Heyward...duh. I knew I was forgetting someone obvious. Stanton, maybe.
  24. ahem....Tulo at 2nd...ya right IT'S MY TEAM!
  25. Yeah. You've heard of him?
