  1. I don't know what you're talking about. As you can clearly see, Hoffman received a Win for the game. Therefore, he was the major pitching contributor to the victory! Similarly, Chris Carpenter did not play a factor in the game, and thusly did not receive a L. Besides, Hoffman only screwed up on two pitches! He just forgot momentarily (twice) that he isnt supposed to pitch with a softball underhand toss in high-leverage situations.
  2. The bowling pin thing was amazing. I don't care about the shirt-untuck thing like some vocal Cards fans do, but it's pretty silly, anyway. I don't think Carpenter should have relayed his issues to the media. I guess he was just grouchy; it took him 6 starts last year before he gave up his first dinger.
  3. Ravech picked the Brewers to win the Central, and Aaron Boone picked the Reds. I also would enjoy their explanations. If the Cards falter this season with injuries, inconsistency, or McGwire Super-Soakering the crowd with gallons of HGH, fine. But Boone is going with that, and also throwing the Cubs down to 5th? Is it all a ploy so he can say "Well, I knew I was going for the dark horse but I super-duper like Jay Bruce!"
  4. Honestly I'm kind of surprised that lesson hasn't mentioned Cardstalk yet. Dear Lesson, Cubs/Cards will continue to be the biggest rivalry thirty miles west of the Atlantic. I'm not sure why you would possibly think it wouldnt be. Are you trying to polarize yourself against yet another message board community? Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.
  5. Cardinals fan here who agrees. Any Cards fan who sided with Buerhle simply because Wood was a Cub at the time isn't making much sense. 20K is just more dominant. Both games were absolutely terrific. I saw the end of the White Sox game after a buddy texted me to put it on, so I was lucky enough to see that great catch. Wish I'd seen Wood's outing.
  6. I'm pretty interested to see how his contract plays out. If he declines it, just how much would a 900 OPS, highly respected 32 year old third basemen be worth? 4/75? More years, less per? Obviously we have 162 - or more for you optimistic Cubbies, :D - to see if he continues to be awesome, or if his body raises some flags for GMs. If he misses more than a quarter of the season, though, I'd have a hunch that he'd take the 16.6 and go for one more 4 or 5 year deal starting in 2012.
  7. Quickly, Magdal! Move on to something else! McGwire's hitting and Pujols' slump were unsuccessful! I'd recommend the Holiday contract, as that one you're less likely to be made a fool of for several years yet!
  8. If TLR had been snortin' away, maybe he wouldn't have fallen asleep at the wheel?
  9. I enjoyed the [expletive] outta that!
  10. Sure you do. That's the game where the Pirates' front office allows a randomly selected Cubs fan in the stands to choose any Pirate to be traded to the Cubs sometime before the trade deadline. The Pirates would receive two middling prospects pegged as eventual AAAA relievers and/or backup MI's. That fan could be you!
  11. It was written in part due to the national opinion that Pujols is going to demand a 250+ million dollar contract, when he's repeatedly and clearly said for years that money is not as important to him as building a championship team. He's not gonna re-sign for less than 20 million, but he also won't be making 35 or 30 or probably even 27 million, as so many people that don't listen to him keep assuming. I expect the Cardinals to give him a big fat contract with a whole boatload of deferred salary. Anyway, it was a pretty hilarious article. Seems like Olney shits out a spurious column once every few weeks, between his usual decent-to-above-average stuff.
  12. Honestly, it'd be brilliant if it were a joke account. It'd be one of the most elaborate parody attempts I'd have seen in all my longtime forum lurking. As it is, though, as a real guy who just really hates Mark McGwire n Fam, it's just kinda confusing and upsetting.
  13. I'm confused. Are you implying that Mark McGwire should have bunted more in his career?
  14. Dear Magdal: I promise you that McGwire did nothing to harm your family. Calling his parents scum is a bit of a stretch, don't you think?
  15. As a kid, I told coaches that I modeled my left-handed swing after Will Clark. Unfortunately, although I had nice enough form, I had an issue with actually making contact with the ball. And we're talking coach pitch here.
  16. I think the Cubs have some chance to be a solid team and win the division, but there's simply a higher chance, in my opinion, that they stay a middling team right around .500. Watching Silva start games, for instance, is going to be as cringe-inducing as, say, my time watching Kip Wells try to get through 3 innings for STL. As a buddy of mine says, ya got too many anchors and not enough sails. That said, I still want the Cubbies to get second place; Cards/Cubs rivalry is always the highlight of the regular season for me.
  17. Perhaps this ? http://jonathanshaffer.files.wordpress.com/2009/07/bud-selig-microphone-4251.jpg
  18. Agreed. Basically, I think Pujols will receive a whole bunch more boos and catcalls than McGwire will, simply because the crowd won't notice him. Now if only there was a jumbotron to show his cratered face 30 feet tall, then there'd be a great time to unite for a classic Wrigley Cheer!
  19. I assume there will be about 50 drunk Cubs fans who will leave Sluggers pre-game early to yell at McGwire during BP. Just let it die, already. Enjoy beautiful weather, drunk women, and a classic stadium. Maybe even watch the game for an inning or two. Why waste time being a douche?
  20. Is there a reason that Millar was not in the MLBPA? Is he just super anti-union or something? Didn't want to pay his fees for the bake sale?
  21. Don't worry Cubs fans! He just needs to be traded to the Pirates sometime this year before AL pitchers figure out how to strike him out like it's whiffle ball. Then he can get shipped over to you in 2011! There's still time guys! Man, Dick just struck out twice more while I was typing this.
  22. I walked out onto the sidewalk and stumbled in to three different people who bought dope from Fergie in the 70s, so I really snickered when I read this stuff. McGwire juiced. So did a bunch of others. La dee da. Let's move the fack on already.
  23. Good god, I'm depressed to read this. It's too bad gender roles weren't reversed for him - I think all he's got left to offer is the fact that every female Cardinals fan I know raved about how attractive he was. He coulda gone the Anna Kournikova route. Instead, he'll just have to be satisfied knowing he was really good for a few years, until his body completely broke down. I got to see the guy throw a 10 inning shut-out against Roger Clemens, from the best seats I've ever had in my life, so I will always respect the guy. But, wow, I really would be surprised if a team even bothered to take a flier on him.
  24. I'm glad this came out now, so his face is plastered all over espn.com now and not during ST, when we Cardinals faithful should be much more worried about how he'll be helping Rasmus and Ludwick hit lots of moon shots. I don't know any Cardinals fans, personally, that defended him as a clean player. I guess there are plenty of idiots over at Cards Talk that will act all shocked and outraged and say "I ALWAYZ TRUSTED HIM!?!!!" Personally, I never liked what he did to Cards games in the late 90s. We'd be losing 7-2, and he'd get a standing ovation for a massive foul ball then striking out. Hello, people, we're losing the game! Argh. I can't say he didn't help revitalize fan interest in the team after a pretty crappy early 90s.
  25. What a stupid, stupid thing to say in public. Ugh.
