  1. Reggie Golden #9???? I know he's a toolsy, boom or bust guy but doesn't that seem to high for him? Isn't he more of a mid-high teens guy? But I guess there are usually 10-20 guys every year where an argument can be made that any of them can be put into a teams 7-10 ranked players in a system and I guess Golden falls in that category.
  2. We're right at 115 on the 40 man right now. We went into last year at 135. either way that still 20 million. no one was getting 20 mil from us except Fielder who is gone now. And soler may not have to count against the 40 man if they get creative. Well the plan right now seems to be going after Soler, Cespedes and a veteran relief pitcher (guess we have interest in bringing in one since we have been linked to a few guys before they signed elsewhere) right now and if we actually sign all 3 of those that could add $10-15m to the payroll on the 40 man for this year pretty easily. If those were our last three moves that would be a great finish to the off season. Two moves for the present and one for the future. I dont see us getting both cubans though with the marlins out there trying to make a marketable splash. I agree, it seems 1 or 2 of those things happening is more likely than all 3, but like I said the plan at least appears to be to go after those 3 with what is known. So if that's what they are doing now, they need to have that money in the budget and they may very well budget those three moves to bring us into last years payroll range (which is where Ricketts has said he expects/will allow us to be on opening day).
  3. why would that mean no money for soler? we were promised by ricketts that the payroll would remain the same. We are 40 mil short right now by my calculations. Plus were are going to get more advertising revenue from the right field renovations We're right at 115 on the 40 man right now. 4. What's Soler's status in terms of getting residency (guessing he's going to the DR as well) and time frame on when he becomes a MLB FA? Or has he already gone through all that?
  5. But he was probably too busy out on safaris and finding priests to bless the stadium and dugouts to actually follow through with seeing the rule enforced.
  6. Eh, don't really care if we miss out especially if he gets a deal for $50-60m+. Soler is the guy I really hope we get, as I prefer him to Cespedes. If we only get one Soler is my preference, younger, cheaper, probably equally as much upside as Soler will get to be developed in the MLB minor league system and not Cuba (which the MLE is somewhere around A ball), and if all works out he should be ML ready around when we, hopefully, become annual contenders in a few years.
  7. Szczur kinda looks like DeRosa in that picture
  8. Didn't the Brewers get stuck with a reliever that unexpectedly accepted arby to the tune of ~$10 mill.? Did the Brewers even make an offer to Fielder? K-Rod accepted arby, think they settled on a deal around $7m. The Brewers reportedly offered a long term deal to Prince sometime around the end of the regular season/during the playoffs that he didn't take to seriously and declined but it was for at least 5 years for over $100m, iirc. Think I remember reading it on a brewers message board (brewerfan.net). Edit: They officially made that offer two springs ago (oops), but I do remember there were rumblings that the Brewers were trying to sign him to an extension during/towards the end of last season and it was at least in the neighborhood of that offer.
  9. I think it's clear Boras/Fielder are grasping at straws and waited out the Darvish/Rangers negotiations to see if they fell through and now are trying to wait out/encourage MLB/McCourt/Dodgers/Dodgers new owner to give him the big deal. I am surprised there have been no reports on the Brewers trying to get creative to bring him back on a 1 or 2 year deal for large aav, or for them to offer him a long term deal with lots of opt outs or even ownership clauses. If they can bring back Fielder they would be right at the top of the division again. Without him, I think the Reds and Cardinals are better than them.
  10. Maybe you didn't follow the Cubs as closely in the early part of the decade. 2003 was the year that the was supposed to be the beginning of dominance for a decade. The 2008 team was the end of any relevance. but in terms of which team was better, it's not even close. the 2008 team was completely stacked. I think the 08 team was better, but I don't think it's fair to say 03's team wasn't even close. That rotation was damn good. What isn't even close, however, is how much better the 2004 team was than either of those teams "on paper."
  11. That hit his knee, I think.
  12. The 10 year thing is absurd and I doubt Prince and Boras are holding firm on that. I think it's weird though, that as to this point, there have been no reports of any teams even offering him a 5, 6, or 7 year deal. Granted we aren't privy to all the info out there and he may very well have offers in those year ranges from a team or even multiple teams.
  13. I have to imagine this is more The Red Sox wanting something exorbitant than it is The Cubs not wanting to give compensation or not offering something fair (money and/or an A ball player) that they are so far apart on an agreement that Bud needs to get involved. Either that or Theo and Jed just hate Lucchino so much that they aren't offering much at all and not budging from it. Whatever the outcome I'd be upset if we had to give up more than a couple hundred thousand dollars and/or a low level (and limited) prospect.
  14. That's really nothing new, the report they cite to make that statement was posted a page or two back. Whoops. Been too enamored with the Packers of late to pay real close attention. No problem, I was just on MLBTR and saw that as their top article and thought maybe some more news came out but when I saw the report they cited to make the statement I realized it was already posted here sometime between Sunday and today. Either way it's good news.

  16. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes down to +1.5 by game time. Think a lot of people will jump on the Giants with that line.
  17. Damn. That's gonna happen all the time isn't it. I got the over under set at 46 1/2. Why the heck is Campana hitting instead pinch running for whoever walked? Because he's the 4th OF and already in the starting lineup in place of Soriano/Byrd/Dejesus/Jackson/Johnson?
  18. Well, they will win at Nebraska (Nebraska is really bad). So they just need to get 1 from @ Wisconsin/Michigan/Purdue. They should be able to win one of those games. I would say 4-3 is quite likely in that stretch, while 5-2 isn't out of the question, even assuming a loss @OSU today. Umm...probably out of the question. You really think Indiana is good enough to win 2/3 @Wisky, Michigan, Purdue? Yes. Wisconsin sucks, and they will win one between Michigan/Purdue.
  19. Nats extended Gio Gonzalez through 2016 with options for 17' and 18' today. Dollar amounts aren't out yet but will probably be between $30-40m.

  22. So does it appear that Campana has a pretty firm grasp on the 4/5th OF spot? That's disappointing. Also did Theo/Jed/McCleod/Sveum/Anyone of importance in management mention anything about the plans for B. Jackson to start the year? Other than the token "he'll get a look in ST" line?
  23. No, but it's better than me flipping on a game for 10 minutes and seeing Wood come in as the closer for the Cardinals facing the Cubs and seeing a K, Pop out, Walk, and Tony Campana attempting to bunt for a hit and being thrown out at first to end the game.
  24. What exactly did he say or talk about that gave you this impression? I don't know much about him.
  25. That's a nice trade for both teams
