  1. Because the GM is obsessed with efficiency and the owner is comfortable with the business model of a losing Cubs team still being profitable. but there are lots of guys who would still have fit into an efficiency plan with more bulk. jed can't be scared of 2 year deals. There’s still plenty of those guys out there if that’s the plan to go 1-2 year deals. Segura, Martinez, Brantley, Profar, Syndergaard, Smyly, Kimbrel, Smith, Britton, Narvaez, Aguilar, Belt, Mancini, Pollock, Anderson, Eovaldi, Givens, Nelson, etc. There’s plenty of guys left to go short term and maybe build a WC team if things break.
  2. he's probably trying to, but nobody wants to come to the cubs for whatever reason They’ve gotten a premier international FA in Suzuki last year, Stroman, Taillon and Bellinger in the last ~14 months. They clearly can get guys. Yes they haven’t gotten the big anchor (Suzuki may still be one) but it’s not like they haven’t gotten decent guys to come.
  3. If Crane/Ricketts/business side have all this money and want a big move they should just step in and push Jed away. Obviously not a healthy environment between business side and FO side, but if that’s what they want they cut the checks and a signing like Correa takes a Ricketts/business side sign off. So just step in and deal with Boras directly and get it done if they want that with the public comments about money and contending.
  4. Good, let them sign him and give us Correa
  5. We are the betting favorites for Correa
  6. Ralph says us and the Twins have “the inside track” on Correa in his article today.
  7. Wait wait wait…Why is this exclusive to the FA SS coming off the 6+ fWAR season? Here I was thinking Correa as One Man was a joke but that like…really is Plan A? Sweet baby Jeebus I hope against hope Hoyer more chutzpah. This team needs impact starters plural to do anything next year let alone the next 2-3 My thesis is I don’t think Swanson is an impact starter, be glad to be proven wrong if we sign him and will cheer for him. But I think there’s plenty of indicators he’s not really an impact guy for the money it will take.
  8. I’d prefer Narvaez to him so won’t hate it if we miss out. Prepare for Yan Gomes then to be your everyday starter. I mean just look at the rotation when he calls game! (that's some dumb Yadier Molina logic) Narvaez is a very good defender/game caller and has a 106 wRC+ vs RHP, Gomes 117 vs LHP. Bet you can cobble together a decent catching tandem there.
  9. I'm like 60/40 on whether I want the Cubs to come down with him just because I think the tantrums if they don't will be hilarious I’d prefer Narvaez to him so won’t hate it if we miss out.
  10. Swanson is a 2.5-3.5 win player most likely and committing 9 figures to him in a lost season when he’s getting closer to 30 makes little sense to me. He’s not a guy and there’s ways to create his value for cheaper and try and thread a needle vs having him hamstring you when maybe we’re good in 2-3 years. well i guess i'm just not down with giving up for 2-3 more years Signing Swanson really doesn’t help the next 2-3 years if they don’t add a real star and the 1-2 year vet deals can bring as much value without the money outlay for a guy who’s just a guy, imo. Maybe things break right enough they make a WC game and done have a burden of 9 figures on Swanson.
  11. They're not making the playoffs with Swanson either so just punt another season if that's the plan swanson will be on the cubs for more than 1 year, they still need to add talent and get closer Swanson is a 2.5-3.5 win player most likely and committing 9 figures to him in a lost season when he’s getting closer to 30 makes little sense to me. He’s not a guy and there’s ways to create his value for cheaper and try and thread a needle vs having him hamstring you when maybe we’re good in 2-3 years.
  12. I’d rather have Segura than Dansby considering the price and just keep Nico at SS and Segura at 2B/3B.
  13. Jed should come out and ask why Ricketts and Crane decided to take the legacy/long term play in the Marquee deal that required money put in and little money up front vs doing a comcast/Ballys/etc deal where they just got paid when we had our core so we had a bag to supplement them.
  14. Considering he was well above that pace in 2020, that means his per 150 pace the last 5 years is 25.6, 19.4, 14.5, 15.1, and 2.2 last year. Seems like it's pretty fairly regressing last year for someone playing the upcoming season at 28. Also we know if he signs he’s not staying at SS over the life of his contract, he’ll shift to 3B at some point (and probably be + there). And we already have Nico to shift to SS if he’s bad sooner than later or otherwise the prospects coming up and/or other acquisitions. I feel confident Correa will be a plus defensive SS for a few years yet but if he’s not we have options to upgrade the defense.
  15. I thought one of the ESPN channels usually shows the D2 championship. Yeah I think one of the ESPN channels (or ESPN+ streaming) shows the D2/D3 championship games for most sports.
  16. I’ll be mad if they miss out on Correa, don’t care the price or years. Swanson is a tbd for me depending on terms, he isn’t a guy we have to have at any price if we don’t get Correa.
  17. Loxas doesn’t know horsefeathers
  18. So, it cost us $39 million to trade Heyward for Bellinger and we still might end up with a weak hitting LH outfielder? Except Bellinger plays an elite CF
  19. Contreras contract isn’t good i said we could have had him on a good contract, he seemed to want to stay pretty badly and i'd still take him on the cards contract We’ll never know what the Cubs offered but the rumored offer to Rizzo as an extension is far more than he’s gotten from the Yankees (4-5 years for $75 mil or so I want to say). I think some of these guys overplayed their hand and glad we avoided Willy’s deal. Close to 9 figures for a 30+ catcher who has injury history and isn’t great defensively is a bad bet, imo.
  20. Contreras contract isn’t good
  21. With where we’re at. And I think it’s all feasible, wouldn’t mind doing Turner+ Swanson FA and a Murphy trade. Turner is 3B, Wisdom/Mervis/Bellinger 1B, Bellinger mostly CF, Morel is the RHH OF/utility guy then. Then do a Smyly/Syndergaard level SP add and then 2 of Kimbrel, Rogers, Ottavino, Nelson, Smith, Britton, vet FA RPs.
  22. That probably includes the posting fee
  23. Burdi is a lot of fun for the lab if he can ever stay healthy
  24. I wonder how much it would take to get Kimbrel on a 1 year or 1+1 deal? He can’t be too expensive, he was good in the first half last year but blew out in the second half. If that was mechanics and not health I’d be quite interested in bringing him back since he has comfort here and rapport with the staff to get things sorted out. Kimbrel, Smith, Britton, Green (coming off TJ and probably a second half add), and Jimmy Nelson are BP adds I have my eyes on. Would love to add Lugo but I bet he gets paid and don’t know if we’d go there on a RP.
