  1. As has been mentioned a lot, I don’t think they’d be against going over the LT this year for the right guy/moves. With all the money falling off after the year they could easily reset next year while having room to add. The only reason not to be in on Correa would be if this medical issue is really that big of a worry, which don’t blame them, or if they truly think they can get Ohtani next year and will wait until then to go over the LT. Nobody has said they are adverse to going over the LT, they try and not be repeaters but I’d be surprised if they aren’t over the LT in the next 3 years. According to reports the Cubs never made him a formal offer so I don’t think they’re interested at all. They made an offer last year, if the Mets thing falls through and they’re comfortable with the medicals I’d think they’re in on him.
  2. Can’t see it being the Cubs. Too close to the LT now I think As has been mentioned a lot, I don’t think they’d be against going over the LT this year for the right guy/moves. 3. I’ve always been a fan and like the profile, maybe now that he’s older it won’t happen, but I always thought there’d be a slight power increase getting out of SF too.
  4. I thought that was still Elway (thus my comment) He hasn’t been the GM since 2020 I want to say, he has a do nothing title job he gets to go the games in the booth and look important now and maybe he gets asked some thoughts on players or transactions.
  5. Seems like the GM should also be gone who picked this horrible coach, who they literally needed to bring in a guy to manage the clock for him a few weeks in and also made maybe the worst sports trade and extension of all time for a terrible QB.

    NFL Week 16

Since they usually stack division games in December, I’d assume it’s more the fact they gotten to face a lot of shitty teams vs it actually being a true talent/thing? The NFC North is largely terrible since Rodgers has been there.
  7. Weirdly I think the outfield is probably more shallow when you think about the likely 26 man roster. If Velazquez doesn't make the team, your primary backup OF is...Wisdom? Mastrobuoni/McKinstry? Morel? But yeah some sort of OF add could be needed yet too. Even if it’s like a Peralta (who can DH), Grossman, Pollock, or Pham as a cheap bet? Profar makes some sense for the roster now too since he can move all around but he probably takes a multi year deal and the others 1 year or like 1+1s. One of those guys with a 1B add of the names mentioned seems feasible and stay under the tax. Then cut bait with Madrigal and/or one of Mckinstry/Mastrobuoni and could start Velazquez in AAA
  8. Kay seems intriguing
  9. He shouldn’t have been determining any additions and certainly is just a guy but DFA’ing Rivas for the Kay guy…. we have to be adding some sort of 3B/1B guy, right? It’s Wisdom, Mervis (who we have no idea on), Higgins, Morel, Madrigal, Mckinstry/Rays guy (probably only keeping 1 of Mckinstry/Rays guy) for the corners. With obviously Bellinger able to play some 1B but then there’s OF problems. Have to think Mancini, Belt, Aguilar or Hosmer is gonna happen. Which doesn’t block Mervis if he’s a thing since there’s the DH.
  10. As overall value yeah and most of the profile I think so, but I’d hope PCA can do better than Varsho’s .230/.300/.440 slash line. Would hope PCA could get more in that 265-.280/.325-.340/.420-450 range
  11. Well they would be losing about 68m in pre-arb payroll going into 2024 (comparing 2023 pre-arb to 2024 pre-arb). Unfortunately that 68m savings is made up of Hendricks, Stroman, Bellinger, Happ, Gomes and Boxburger all hitting FA, so already an uphill climb to maintain that after this year. Obviously the hope/goal would be that some of the young guys all take steps that you have cheap production as replacements for some of those spots (Davis CF, Amaya C, whatever pitching emerges) and then can splurge on maybe only a guy or two who’s really a star guy. Also having Nico continue to grow, Suzuki take a step, Mervis being some sort of real thing would be big along with some of the young pitching on the roster.
  12. Assuming we are staying under the LT, I don’t think that’s a guarantee with all the money coming off next year to reset but still add a lot again. I think I’d go Segura for 3B and whoever is cheapest of Mancini, Belt, Aguilar, Hosmer (in that order of preference). Then add some other vet RP. Segura/Swanson/Nico and then a Wisdom, Mervis and whatever FA add of the 4 above rotate 1B/DH and OF (if Mancini). Then you hopefully move Madrigal and then have Mckinstry/Rays guy as the LHH hitting guy who can play basically everywhere.
  13. And considering he won’t have played in a game for like 16-18 months when the season starts
  14. Can’t see how it makes sense to trade Hendricks unless you are just trying to dump his salary Yeah I think moving Hendricks would be a salary dump preseason. I personally would keep him if his reported offseason training to get more velo and mechanics back is going well. But you dump Hendricks, maybe even Madrigal for whatever you can get to clear most salary then maybe we have enough for Conforto, Mancini and a RP in FA yet.
  15. Was just looking at our payroll, Spotrac and and Fangraphs shows Hendricks has a vesting option for next year for $16 mil. Anyone what know what that is as it’s not listed the benchmarks and if it’s easily attainable? If it looks like it’s pretty easy to hit there could maybe be a contract rework and add 1-2 years so save maybe $2-5 mil in LT money.
  16. Smyly official
  17. They were, though I would guess the Cubs looked a lot more appealing in the 2017 offseason than they do now. On the plus side the universal DH is here and that seemed to be a big sticking point for going to the Cubs. Yeah I believe there reports (local and national guys) that said we had a great/presentation fit and maybe even offered the most money and his interest to come was real. But there was no universal DH at the time and no confirmation it was coming. So it would’ve been harder for him to both pitch and hit having to play the field he felt because all the more physical demand.
  18. The Cubs cut Bote and literally nobody took him for league min. He has negative value. According to MLBTV, Escobar also has negative value (though Bote's is worse). That's why prospects might need to be added. How in the world does Escobar have negative value?? He makes only $10 mil this year and is expiring. He can play multiple positions and is average to plusish at them. He’s put up 2.3, 2.6, -.5 (COVID year), 2.9 and 3.5 WAR last 5 years. He’s projected for 1-2 WAR this year with average defense but power and can fit in to the lineup in multiple roles. He’s not going to take a lot to get, probably one of the pitchers who can be a SP/RP/Swing type this year and maybe a little extra lotto ticket type. But don’t see Bote having any value to them.
  19. The Cubs cut Bote and literally nobody took him for league min. He has negative value. I don't think anyone had the chance to get Bote for the league minimum, he was outrighted and any team claiming him would take responsibility for his contract. He does still have negative value because of the contract though. I thought they cut him and he decided to take the assignment to AAA when he could’ve been an outright FA (with Cubs owing him his deal and sign as a league min)?

  21. Stevie is a complete piece of horsefeathers and should be in prison for life, but at least he’s spending all this money on baseball players (that hopefully forces other owners to do it/get rid of the LT/cap ideally) and it leaves him less money to do insider trading and violate other securities laws.
  22. Ed Howard should be considered dead until proven otherwise with that injury. But yeah, I’m not super high on Morel but think there’s a defense and dongs profile there and he should be buried enough on the roster he’s not an everyday guy, unless he breaks out. Hopefully he cleans some things up (at least marginally) and provide some sort of split/platoon advantage.
  23. He throws decently hard for a lefty, seems like a nice piece to throw in the pile in ST and see what happens.
  24. I wonder if Escobar or Canha would be available now that they added Correa. I’d prefer Escobar by a decent amount more but Canha could be a fit too.
