  1. If the season started tomorrow our CF options (Baez and Szczur are pretty much it) have a combined -.6 fWAR for their careers, with one of them never having actually played the position. I think a CF is more than a nice to have at this point.
  2. I think that's more of a nice to have than a need at this point and 2.0 WAR guys I don't think are that readily available/willing to sign if they aren't going to be guaranteed starting jobs. But like I said a few posts ago, if that's insurance you think we need go get Colby Lewis, Aarong Harang, Doug Fister, Colon, etc or find an IFA that could produce this year if he's available (Iglesias I think).
  3. I don't disagree we shouldn't be looking to get a Carassco, Gray, Archer, etc if made available and use Soler or Baez as a main piece. I disagree with thinking its of huge importance to use assets to find a marginal upgrade over Wood, Richard, etc for a 6th starter. You can find those guys closer to ST. Is Hendricks not under control longer than 2017? I guess it depends on what you mean by "huge importance." We've got a 90-win team on paper right now, maybe a bit better. Nothing is of "huge importance." I think there's as much to be gained by upgrading from a replacement-level player in a spot you're 75% likely to use than a ~1.5 WAR player (Baez in CF) in a spot you're definitely going to use. I guess I just feel comfortable with where we are at now if Richard/Wood/whatever minor league FA/ST invite we bring in needs to give us ~10 starts. If there's a catastrophic injury to the rotation I'm sure we will go out and make a necessary move in season. Again I'm all for a significant addition to the rotation with a good young, controllable guy. But if it's just looking to upgrade Wood/Richard slightly who do you want to target, do you have any guys in mind? I also think it's incredibly risky to have Baez be plan A in CF and assume we would get above replacement value in a spot, like you said, we definitely are going to use.

  5. I've been intrigued by Odorizzi since the start of the offseason as the 2nd SP addition. If he's truly available for a reasonable price I hope we are in.
  6. Sucks, they have little interest in him starting, and sucks. I'm fairly comfortable with those as our back up options along with signing a few guys to minor league deals/ST invites, like Billingsley, Lohse, Colby Lewis etc. or if we really want to live give Petit a major league deal. Edit: or find a IFA(s) that could contribute this year, I know there's the guy Tim and others like that potentially can contribute. Iglesias I think?
  7. Your sixth guy isn't really "depth." He is more likely to be in the rotation than not And we kinda already have that in Richard, Wood, and maybe Pierce Johnson later in the year.
  8. Is Gordon in RF next year, at age 32, and thru the life of his next contract that much of a certainty to be a 3 WAR+ a year player? I don't have a problem trading Soler in the right deal and get he still has a lot of questions. I just don't necessarily think Gordon is the guy to replace him with for stability/certainty.
  9. Jensen/Chapman ending the game would certainly be formidable. With losing Greinke going with the strategy to strengthen the bullpen to shorten games in non Kershaw starts might be a better use of their resources rather than throwing big money at a SP like Cueto or Leake.
  10. Really don't get why we'd go after Shields unless throwing him in a Ross trade brought the price down. Like I wonder if they would do something like Hammel, Jeimer, Torres, and PJ for Ross and Shields with us paying all of Shields salary? Would that be worth it to get Ross?
  11. Sure, if he isn't gonna get pissy about not being a closer
  12. I wonder if the White Sox would consider moving Robertson? Just trying to think of guys who fit the "top closer" role and would be expected to be available
  13. We apparently offered the same AAV, but only were offering 3-4 years
  14. I think I prefer the Lackey deal over Shark's deal, though I wouldn't have been terribly upset at a 5/90 deal for him. Pitching half his games in SF/NL West I think Shark should do pretty well over the life of his contract.
  15. Why? I don't think his development is going to be affected, good or bad, at all if he's given 350-400 PA's as a utility player between OF/3B/SS/2B/PH vs. 500+ PA's as a full time starter at some position.
  16. Soo Harper is gonna get what, $350 million in a few years when he's a FA?
  17. Probably not bringing back Fowler? What, if anything more, would the cardinals get if we signed Heyward?
  18. Does this mean more Ross starts so the super friends can catch/pitch to each other?
  19. in a vacuum how could you not love it? it's almost guaranteed neutral value with some potential for solid surplus plus very short term commitment. it's outside said vacuum that you can find reasons to not like it, IMO I don't like giving a 37 year old pitcher $16-18 million a year who relatively recently had an injury when we also seem to have a tight budget to work with. Again I don't like it if it's our only significant signing/addition, but if he came in that much cheaper than other options and it will help us make other additions I don't mind it as much. Example if the option was Samardizja at $100 or more and then like Span or Parra for CF or Lackey and Fowler/Heyward/Gordon/etc. I like the move and the general decision
  20. I like the move, it's worth the try to see how he does. I also wonder if the decision to do it means Castro is very unlikely to get dealt now?
  21. I don't really like this move in a vacuum, but if it allows us to go after Heyward, Gordon or Upton (more so on the latter 2 if Soler is dealt) I don't mind it as much.
  22. I like this a lot
  23. Rat boy is LaStella, I absolutely consider him a serious candidate for a MLB job to start the year on the bench unless we add someone, Maddon used him a lot in important games down the stretch and in the playoffs.
  24. I'm guessing he's a reliever only? Hasn't really been a SP since early 2010's, only started 4 games between AAA/MLB this past year. Looks like he has decent velo for a LHP, in 2013 when he only appeared in relief his FB velocity averaged 95.5 MPH and was at 92.4 last year with about 60% of his innings coming as a SP.
