The punter is typically the backup/emergency FG kicker so I’d assume most FG kickers are the backup/emergency punters.

With Reed gone there's really nobody left I'd feel comfortable with committing multiple years and decent AAV to in the relief market. But Oh on a 1 year deal intrigues me a bit as a last bullpen piece. I'd be fine trying him as the nominal closer to start the year if they feel he looks like he's back to his 2016 self or close to it.

I'm more surprised the Cardinals didn't make that happen. Gregerson, Lyons, and Cecil are all fine to good relievers, but Reed anchoring that pen would've made a pretty big difference and none of those 3 should've posed an obstacle to adding a closer. I guess they're counting on Reyes really bolstering things when he gets to the big leagues in May. Are they planning on Reyes being a pen only option this year or are they going to try and get him to start (with his innings likely being very limited and watched I'd guess bullpen route with maybe a handful of starts)? I could see them going after Colome now. Also Passan, or one of the baseball guys on twitter, I just saw said Reed had 3 year offers but the ability to close and be in the Midwest was the reason he chose the Twins. I'm guessing we were a team with a 3 year offer out but couldn't guarantee closing opportunities.

I was always dubious on how real their interest/financial ability was for Darvish and how much he wanted to go there. I never really saw them as a threat unless they really went over the top on a offer (which I don't believe they could really afford). I view them more as a Cobb/Lynn landing spot or some of the bargain/risk guys like Tillman, Garcia, etc.

Yeah 6/130-150 with an opt out in 2 of the first 3 years and front load it a bit. -
I wonder if they promised him the closer role and go him a little cheaper and he probably wasn’t interested/wanted more money to come here (or to another team) who couldn’t guarantee that

Seeing some things on MLBN talking about the LT. I knew it was bad but the visualization of them showing breakdowns made me realize how bad/restrictive these new penalties are. I can’t believe this was passed and the players union and/or big market teams stood for it. Hopefully it’s an unintended consequences thing and gets ratified soon because these penalty rules are ridiculous.

Grimm is going to arbitration apparently. Should have just non tendered him instead. I wonder if we were fine going to the top end of what he'd get/request and we just tried to come in a decent amount lower since he sucked ass last year and feel a compelling argument can be made in our favor in arbitration if it goes there but if we "lose" it's not a crazy number to go to.

I demand a MS Paint of this if we do end up signing him between the start with Theo/Jed seemingly telling Cobb to horsefeathers off and laughing in his face when he wanted $20+ Mil AAV then getting on a plane to go meet with Yu and that meeting involving Yu not using a translator (which made it go extra long), the stupid Barstool twitter fiasco, Yu's twitter game and now this report of guys at the airport/hotel with Cubs stuff in LA.

I really appreciate the time it must take them to do it and them putting it out there as a reference point but I don't think it's that hard to hit estimates within a reasonable margin of error. If they have a guy(s) taking the time to do it with the amount of information out there to compare similar players/past amounts I don't think it's crazy tough to find the 2-5 most similar comps for players and add a % increase for inflation/rising salary costs and hit in the ballpark of the final salary. I don't think it takes some super complex model. What makes it so impressive to me is how small that margin of error seems to be. I think building a decent model wouldn't be that tough, but this one goes above and beyond IMO. And while the sample is huge, when you're slicing and dicing by so many factors (position, service time, production) you end up with some pretty small cohorts for some guys. Basically as someone who has generally failed when trying to build out these types of models, I've got a lot of respect. Oh I agree and I certainly appreciate the amount of time it must take to do it. Just saying I don't think it would be that hard to do it if you take the crazy amount of time to do it that it would require.
