  1. I just was going to post almost essentially this. If Harper comes in closer to $30 aav than $35 like some seem to think. It doesn’t take a ton of crazy moves to fit him in and stay under 246. You would need someone to take about half of Chatwood’s remaining money +/-, Kintzler, Duensing, and Russell and we’d have some room to play with. Getting someone to take say $10 million remaining on Chatwood, or even look to trade Q and get something actually decent and cheaper back to clear him and someone to take all of Kintzler, Duensing and Russell (or just non-tender) money gets us down to about $200 for LT purposes.
  2. Ralph doesn’t list us as a “fit” for Bryce. But he predicts 10/320 for him. If he goes for 10/320 (or say ends up at 12/350) and we don’t get him that’s a horsefeathering joke. That AAV isn’t bad.
  3. “Position of depth” I’d assume means Kintzler and Duensing which shouldn’t take a ton to move. Catatini, Maples, Mekkes, etc types attached to either should be enough
  4. They had, arguably, the best player in college football running their offense that year. I think Clemson is plenty good and probably the 2nd best team but I think Bama is quite a bit better and wins easily when/if they play. I’d guess Bama will be a 8+ point favorite in that game. Oh I agree and it’s boring because Bama will almost assuredly win another championship. I just thought it puzzling to put Clemson in the “second tier” by Raw. If anything, they are the best bet imo to have another game of their life and put up a fight against Alabama. But yes, I think Bama +8 with Clemson sounds about right currently Clemson definitely has the best chance because their defense could hold them down enough and hope they get lucky with some turnovers and special team plays. I think Bama smokes Mich, OSU, Oklahoma or ND. Clemson could be mildly close, at least for most of the game.
  5. I don’t know. Clemson looks good. Yeah. They’ve scored more points the last two games than given up on the year. I don’t see how you sleep on them. I mean they beat Bama in a NC game 3 years ago. They had, arguably, the best player in college football running their offense that year. I think Clemson is plenty good and probably the 2nd best team but I think Bama is quite a bit better and wins easily when/if they play. I’d guess Bama will be a 8+ point favorite in that game.
  6. That’s a horsefeathering joke
  7. Agree, especially because he’ll probably be looking for whatever Manny gets as his comp (he won’t get that but that’s probably going to be his rough starting point) and end up at 6-8 years for ~$25 mil aav.
  8. Paul Sullivan seems to have been the most shut off from info since Theo got here amongst the beat guys. So maybe he wasn’t in on the coordinated leaks by the Cubs to manipulate the media. He paints a better picture here than what we’ve seen from everyone else.
  9. If they're deciding to gamble on the bats they have all clicking again and realizing (rightly) that their starting pitching is held together by Popsicle sticks and rubber bands, yes, it definitely makes sense. I still think it's also misleading to say they chose to give Hamels 20 million, without knowing if they really would have given him the $20 million without a coresponding move to save $7 million and really only make it a $13 million transaction. I don't think there is any question the Cubs aren't broke. They can do one year deals for $13 million. But if they are trying to keep flexibility for future years, these are the kinds of moves you make. What would we be trying to stay flexible for though? If you have money (we do) you stay flexible for when a guy like Bryce hits FA
  10. Yeah I still mostly think this is the case (obviously I want this to be true vs them not spending) but this is the same stuff we see every offseason with teams posturing and outside of the last ~48 hours goes against almost everything we’ve heard for a much longer time. Also the idea the Cubs are doing this to brace the fans for disappointment or gauge their reaction if they don’t sign Harper/Machado seems a little narcissistic by fans/media. I don’t think the Cubs, or any sports team, cares that much about their fans to do that. The Braves GM has some quotes this weekend about being unsure of ever committing to 10+ year deals and them not making sense. Teams are just doing what they do to try and manipulate things.
  11. GM meetings are this week, so we should be getting some Theo and Jed interviews and quotes within the next 2-3 days. They’ll be vague comments in all likelihood but hopefully we’re able to get some better clarity on all this whenever we start hearing and seeing stuff from them.
  12. That would be my guess too if these reports are true about money being tight. They realized they’re getting less and adjusted the budget/projections accordingly. Which sucks because the money is still there if they wanted it to be and also because we missed out on that bubble to take advantage of. I think Clown Kenney was overseeing the TV stuff.
  13. Anybody know how much the Ricketts spent/borrowed for all the renovations and developments? Even a rough guess? I’m seeing $375 million from some old articles about just renovations but nothing overly recent or if that ended up actually costing more and that doesn’t include the other things they’ve put money in around Wrigley for other projects. Obviously they did those things to one day make money (if they aren’t already seeing a payback). It still isn’t an excuse because the money is there regardless to sign Bryce, just more curios than anything.
  14. I’m willing to give the benefit of doubt here that they’ll spend in the end because they’ve proven to be willing to spend the last ~5 years. These articles of the last ~48 hours aren’t going to change my opinion until we get more solid info since up until then their actions and other articles, tweets, etc. written over a longer period went against this.
  15. He should do a decision 2.0 at the winter meetings when he picks us. Really get the hate train going against us.
  16. When was the last time Kaplan or some of these local guys reporting this really were tuned in and reported something/broke something of this magnitude? Our local guys seem to have sucked since Theo’s been here with breaking anything of significance.
  17. Charles The Cat was always a man of honor and integrity and shame on those who doubt a man of his track record
  18. I was looking for that quote earlier but couldn't find it, thanks for posting. I kind of wonder if there's a set payroll, but Ricketts is fine going to another number only for Bryce. Like payroll is 230, but if Theo can reel in Bryce then PTR is willing to go into the 250's. So like, we have the $ for Bryce, but if we miss on him Theo can't just turn around and grab Pollock, Andrew Miller, and David Robertson or whatever else $35m buys. I think that’s likely very much the case. You make special accommodations and exceptions for a guy like Bryce and are willing to go to payroll levels your normally wouldn’t unless it’s for him. You don’t go in to that upper level for the A.J. Pollock’s of the world.
  19. It’s possible something drastically changed with current or future cash projections/availability but a reminder of what Theo said after Darvish. This “Cubs having no money” narrative is all posturing by the FO/idiot writers being idiot writers, IMO.
  20. I think both will get longer deals than they “should” because teams will add 1-3 years for LT purposes. 11 to 14 years makes a lot of sense for that.
  21. VB’s hired Andy Haynes to be their hitting coach. So we need to find a new assistant hitting coach (hire someone close to Bryce imo). Hyde withdrew or isn’t in consideration from any HC Jobs so the rest of the staff appears to be staying in tact.
  22. Cubs Prospect guy broke the guy(s) involved in the Murphy trade and maybe even the trade itself, he seems to be at least a little connected and says he hears 246 is OK to go to. If that’s the case I’d assume 260-65 is in play since if we’re fine going over, you go over 246 a decent amount and not like $2 mil over. Using TT’s numbers (currently at 221.7) if we trade off Kintzler and Duensing for PTBNL and non-tender Russell we get down to 208.9. That leaves ~$55 million to add Bryce, backup C/SS and a bullpen arm(s). That’s plenty of money to work with to do all that without having to do other money clearing trades and if we did other trades it would be because we wanted to and not have too.
