There’s plenty of AB’s between 1B/DH for Abreu and Mervis to coexist. There’s also the likelihood/probability Mervis isn’t all that good (I want to give him a chance as well) that there needs to be some sort of 1B/DH insurance if he just sucks and Abreu seems like a solid fit.

Yeah I’m out on Nimmo for a lot of reasons (health, QO, age, defensive metrics don’t love him all the time), especially if a 9 figure deal is what it takes.

My ideal, relatively realistic offseason is; - Sign Correa (let’s call it ~$35 AAV) - Sign Abreu (2/16-25 or so with maybe some option/buyout stuff) - Sign Bellinger for a 1 year high AAV deal (assuming he’s NT’d) if not him find some sort of other LHH CF for cheap until Davis is up. - Sign/acquire a LHH catcher to compliment Gomes (assuming Willy is gone/use the money he takes for other stuff). Narvaez makes sense. - Explore extensions for Nico and Happ, I really don’t know what is a good/fair deal for either. - Acquire/re-sign 2 of of Marquez, Lopez, Smyly, Syndergaard, Manaea - Sign Carlos Estevez and some other RP, there’s plenty of options. - Trade Madrigal and include a Thompson or Sampson if you can get something useful Would negate a few of these moves if Ohtani is truly available and go all in for whatever it takes for him. But think he’s ultimately kept/we don’t pony up.

Signing/staying with a team because they extended a guy to a stupid long term deal who can’t stay on the field for more than 2 seconds and is a .240/.300/.470 slash line player with a 30% K rate is certainly a selling point.

Carlos Estevez as a FA would be a fun/interesting bullpen add, get him out of Coors and see if there’s some lab stuff.

Mitch Keller would be really interesting. There’s some things to be unlocked there potentially, I agree. And yeah Morel+ whatever not big prospects or even a Thompson type I’d be all in for Devers.

Yeah I really like the idea of bringing Smyly back and something like that 2 year deal makes sense with maybe a 3rd year option for $8-10 mil again with like a $2 mil buyout.

Yeah count me in on liking McKinstry over Madrigal for the roster next year. Since I agree there’s only room for one and McKinstry‘s versatility and LHH is likely better for the roster (assuming they really go try and compete and add a RHH SS). Madrigal sucks too but will probably go hit some empty .315 batting average wherever he is sent to. But McKinstry is the guy to keep with what we have to work with, imo.

This is all very dramatic considering his 4.45 FIP (also CSW%, SwStr%, GB%) is better than the supposedly safer Ace in Marquez...despite being Older...It's almost as if there's more to the game of life! I don't even love Lorenzen as a target so much as the Cubs are better situated to handle him failing than they are a Marquez He hasn’t thrown over 100 innings in like 6 years, there’s a 40-man roster crunch coming and he just doesn’t seem worthwhile of giving a spot to. Thompson/Sampson/Assad/Adbert/Wesneski are already here and likely a few are better and cheaper. Just let them have whatever role you envision Lorenzen is given because he doesn’t move any needles and costs more and is likely worse than multiple ones of those. Marquez has been so much more reliable/durable and actually good and is only 27/28 and while I don’t love him as a target if we are paying top dollar, it seems like there could be a buy low/discount opportunity there. Plus he gets out of Coors and a horsefeathers organization that maybe we can fix/tweak a thing or two with a guy who’s been a dependable 2-4 win pitcher most of his career.

Lorenzen or otherwise, if your FA goals include not getting older then you're already looking at FA wrong. You're going to get older by participating in FA, during an active offseason in general, it's a mental hump you're going to have to get over. 31's not even old for a healthy pitcher in the grand scheme, and Lorenzen's got one of the cleaner arms in FA Of course when you’re looking at adding through FA age is a factor, since that how the system works. Lorenzen has a “clean arm” because he isn’t actually good at pitching so his role(s) have been moved around trying to figure out what he is and replaced by pitchers getting a chance/are better. He is a completely mediocre pitcher and has very little traction of innings/track record of being any sort of a good pitcher. His age absolutely should hurt him at 31 since he hasn’t figured it out yet to be any sort of useful or good pitcher.

Lorenzen is gonna be 31 and has shown no durability/innings and quite frankly just kinda horsefeathering sucks outside he can throw fast. Hard pass. I’m in on Marquez for the right acquisition cost, but the Rockies are probably going to be too dumb to trade him/require a ridiculous trade.

It just seems so weird that they are saying they have the tech to call balls and strikes through challenges, which means they’re admitting umpires can’t always make the right call on strikes and it is a black and white ruling. But they’re just gonna keep letting the umpires make mistakes through a challenge(s) system to fix it. Just implement the automated zone already if you feel that’s the ultimate ruling on such calls. Just seems like a bandaid on an admitted problem they know they have a solution for but half assing the real fix/solution in front of their face.
