  1. In case anyone wants to start their morning out with a good laugh, a poster on the tigers.com board posted that a package of Marmol, Villters, and Castro (not 1 out of the group, but all 3 combined) would be a good start to a deal for granderson
  2. Off to a good start. Assuming we dont trade for or sign a starter, any chance that he'll be in the mix for that 5th starter job? I'm guessing they will want him to work on some breaking pitches at AAA before bring him into the rotation. Smardz has the inside track for the last spot assuming they don't bring Harden back. If Samardzija is being given a chance for the #5 spot, so should Diamond.
  3. The Moneyball guy plays football too? I thought Billy Beane wrote moneyball
  4. Where is this being reported? I have mild interest, if the price is right.
  5. Stay conservative. Kick the tires on some trade possibilities and see if we can make some moves to free up cash/get a little younger. Don't bring in any new long term contracts. Next year we could potentially lose Lee, Ramirez, and Lilly. So try to stay more flexible for next offseason to try and bring maybe one of those guys back (preferably Ramirez) and we still should have room to add some FA next year.
  6. I would think most teams will at least be "interested" in Harden, with rumors that we aren't offering arbitration (no draft picks given up). Plus the fact he probably isn't going to demand much more than 2 years and not much more than $8-10 per. Also knowing the fact that he is presumably healthy now and when he is on there isn't a better pitcher in the game.
  7. I'd be willing to give Jay Jackson or Cashner as the centerpiece along with one to two of (depending on the combination) Marshall, Gorzo, Flaherty, Burke, Archer, Caridad, Castillo, Guzman, Stevens, or Carpenter. Then maybe a low level throw in or two.
  8. While I agree he is better than scales. The better comparison would be Andres Blanco. As the back up MI spot would likely be between those two. As Miles, unfortunately, has a spot on the 25-man as does Baker. So the questions becomes who is better between Blanco and Fontenot. Personally I like Blanco you get a guy who is superior defensively and can Play SS. With Fontenot you get more pop, but they were similar average and obp guys last year. Plus we save a couple hundred thousand with Blanco.
  9. I have no problem with non-tendering him if he is going to get $1.5 mil+. He simply isn't worth it.
  10. Could Guillen play 2B? If he could I wouldn't be opposed to a Marmol, Theriot, Marshall/Gorzo, Fox and maybe a Flaherty/Darwin Barney type for Granderson and Guillen. We could then sign Scutaro or Cabrera to a 1-2 year deal until Castro is ready. Lineup could then be Granderson CF Cabrera/Scutaro SS Lee 1B Ramirez 3B Guillen 2B Soriano LF Soto c Fukudome RF
  11. based on what? the reds offense has been crap the last 2 seasons, and that's with a ballpark helping them The Reds have a lot of young talent, I'm afraid of them over the next couple years. That's been the general sentiment for a couple years now, no? That's what I have thought, they have developed enough players internally that they should be a competitive team if they would have allocated resources better and made smarter moves trying to bring in veterans to build a supporting cast.
  12. Reports are Harang, Arroyo, Phillips, Cordero, and maybe even Votto could be on the move to keep payroll down. I'd be interested in Phillips, Cordero, and Harang if the asking price wasn't crazy. I remember Votto coming up and playing in the OF for a while, likely a pipe dream, but it would be great to get him and play in RF for this year and then move him to 1B next year when Lee leaves. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/11/reds-to-cut-payroll-big-names-could-be-dealt.html
  13. It would be stupid to not at least enter negotiations with Harden and see if a 1-2 year, incentive, deal could be worked out. I am just luke warm on Castro starting at SS this year, I would like to see him have at least one more full season in the upper levels of the minors (AA/AA). However I wouldn't mind inviting him to ST and see what he can do, if he shows he can handle it there then maybe consider starting him on the OD roster.
  14. who are these mythical solid MI's? I count two servicable 2Bs, a couple end of the bench iowa express guys and aaron miles. Baker, Fontenot, Theriot, Blanco. If by solid you mean league average at best the yes we have 4 solid MI. With Baker being the only one who might perform at an acceptable rate on a $130+ mil. payroll team.
  15. I see no reason either. Pretty much everyone agres that no contending team will have Sam Fuld as a regular starter, but as a 24th man(Aaron Miles is the 25th as far as Im concerned), hes just fine. Between Hoffpauir, Fox, and Brad Snyder, we'll likely have 2 power guys on the bench, so why not have an outfielder there for his defense? Aaron Miles is dead to me as far as I am concerned. But I agree with everything else, as long as we have 1-2 guys on the bench who can be good pinch hitters (between Hoff, Fox, Snyder, and a potential FA we should) I am fine with Fuld as a 4/5 OF and pinch runner option. Bench wise I am more concerned about have a good back up MI, specifically someone who can play good defense at SS and still hit .250+.
  16. Grabow is also a Type A. :-s Reed Johnson is unranked. List We should just offer arbitration to Grabow then, instead of signing him to a 2-3 year deal. Once teams see that they have to give up a first rounder to sign him they will back off and he won't have much of a choice other than to accept arby/go to a hearing and come back for a year.
  17. And with some protection around him? The best players he's had batting behind/in front of him in his career in SD have been Brian Giles, Mike Cameron, Kevin Kouzmanoff, and Kahlil Greene. He'd be a player I would be willing to deal Vitters or Castro for.
  18. Other than Bradford it probably is
  19. Really? Even if we didn't have Lee? We have pieces that are probably pretty attractive to the Padres. One of Vitters or Castro (probably top 30 prospects in baseball), 1-2 of Jackson, Carpenter, Cashner, Gaub, Archer, Parker, and probably some throw in pieces that can fill spots on the ML roster for low salaries and be at least league average like Fontenot, Marshall, Gorzo, or maybe even Wells.
  20. Hendry would have to get pretty creative to get him, both with finding the right pieces and figuring out what to do with Lee. He's available 1 offseason too soon or else we would probably be strongly persuing him.
  21. With Mississippi, Kentucky and Vanderbilt left. The only way, IMO, they finish top-25 (before the bowls) is if they finish 3-0 and win all those games by 2+scores. But if they do finish 3-0 and presumably go to a bowl against a top 3 Big Ten team and win that game then I can see a top 25, maybe 16-20 finish.
  22. [expletive] the NFL Network
  23. Superior in your opinion.(not saying you're wrong) I'd bet most people think Johnny Damon is better than all the free agent OFs of last year(2 of which got 3 year deals) Plus, he's a winner. Damon should get not better than a deal between what Abreu and Burrell got last offseason.
  24. I am really looking forward to not offering Harden arbitration and getting 20+ starts from 2 of Marshall/Gorz/Shark...
  25. I don't think this is a terrible pickup for the Pirates, it gives them a solid defensive 2B and can allow them to move Mccuchen to the 3/4 spot if they want. It also gives the team, who is developing guys at a lot of other positions, a position they don't have to worry about. He could also be a decent trade chip at the deadline and with a good year could be a type B and maybe net them a supplemental pick.
