  1. They're baaaaaaaaaack..... Once again, CR at the helm. Thank you, Raisin. Haven't seen Outshined in a while. O_O, are you out there?
  2. And that is why people who were talking about tanking for Rodon in 2013 like a year ago are insane. full disclosure - i might have said something like that at some point. if i did, i was being stupid. I agree. I don't ever want my team to tank a season intentionally for the hope of some great prospect being available to draft. But I also don't want to reach mediocrity in year two of a rebuild. If you've got a shot to make the playoffs, then go for it. If not, then in the immortal words of Randolph Duke, "Sell, Sell, Sell!!"
  3. I smell photoshop.
  4. They haven't been officially announced yet, so placements certainly can change. Just going off of AZPhil's depth chart dated 3/31. One thing I noticed on that depth chart, is that he's got Erick Leal stateside at the moment. He is one of the guys the Cubs got in return for Campana and just turned 18 two weeks ago. He could be returned to the DSL once their season starts, but it also might be a sign of what management thinks of him...
  5. According to AZPhil, current minor leaguers that are rehabbing are: Pitchers: Arodys Vizcaino ®, Kyler Burke (L), Marcelo Carreno ®, Hunter Cervenka (L), Gerardo Concepcion (L), Dayan Diaz ®, Jin-Young Kim ®, Chang-Yong Lim ®, Armando Rivero ®, and Casey Weathers ® IF: Junior Lake, Greg Rohan, and Ian Stewart OF: Albert Almora
  6. I was really hoping to see Maples in KC to start the season. He's had some apparent foot problems. Hopefully, he's not too far away. Besides the top prospects, my most interesting follows currently are: AAA - Rusin, McNutt and Watkins. AA - Cabrera, Alcantara, Villanueva and Szczur. High A - Torreyes, Bruno, Saunders, and a lot of pitchers P. Johnson, Peralta, Wells, Jensen, Rosario, Reed and likely Paniagua (after some EXST) if he ever gets his visa. A - Obviously Amaya, Candelario and Hernandez. After that, Martin, Arias and Scott. Can't wait to see who surprises. Prospect watching is back!
  7. AZPhil cited rust offensively. Makes sense. EXST might not be the worst thing for him. Could make Kane by May. I'm not high on him though. He's a "has a shot" guy due to his athleticism only at this point.
  8. I noticed that, too. I'm going oversight at this point. Obviously it's a wait and see situation. In other news, AZ Phil reports that Stephen Bruno has not been behind the plate at all this spring, not even in bullpen sessions. Looks that experiment is done, at least for the time being. Also noticed that Jose Dore was playing 1B in his first game since being acquired from the Padres. He played 1B exclusively last season in just 9 games at 3 different levels. But in his previous 2 seasons, he played only corner OF spots.
  9. So with about 2 1/2 months to go, is it fair to say that Appel and Bryant are distinguishing themselves from the rest of the pack with Gray, Frazier, Meadows and Manaea in the next tier?
  10. Not really prospect news, I just found it funny. Anyone who followed the minor league games last year knows what an RBI machine Justin Bour was last season. He led the entire organization with 110 RBI in 138 games and 577 PA on a Smokies team that was middle of the pack (5th out of 10) in team OBP. The only player for Tennessee that was amongst Southern League leaders in OBP was Logan Watkins (4th at .383), but not surprisingly (because he was almost always hitting a couple spots in front of Bour), he led the league in runs with 93. His next closest competitor had 81. After that, everyone was in the 70s. Suffice it to say, last season, Bour was clutch. Justin got his only 2013 spring at bat yesterday. He singled, and, you guessed it, drove in a run...
  11. Wow. Law had him 6th. College bats are the safest bet to make it and Bryant is distinguishing himself as not only the best college bat in this draft, but perhaps a really good one in any draft. He's certainly in the conversation for the Cubs at #2 in my book. I hope Manaea performs well tomorrow and throughout the spring. It'd be nice for there to be 3 really good high-end guys at the top of this draft for Theo & Co. to choose from.
  12. Kevin Gallo is reporting that many of the scouts he is talking to believe that Bryant can/will stick at 3B. Appel is growing on me with each dominant performance he puts out. My main concern with him is Stanford's pitcher abuse. Does anyone have any insight on this that will talk me of the ledge?
  13. I'm hoping for that, too. Things would have to fall right, of course. If teams are taking catchers just a few picks ahead of the Cubs, I wouldn't want them to make a big reach just to fill a need. And who knows how the Cubs are grading these guys internally. This front office has done nothing to make me second guess them thus far so I trust them to make the best pick. However, if Theo & company have some strict rule of taking BPA and only BPA with no wiggle room for consideration of organizational weaknesses, I'll be disappointed. But I haven't heard or read anything yet that leads me to believe that they do.
  14. While I definitely agree with this, CR, I just thought it would be interesting/encouraging to note: 3 IP, 5 H, 7 R, 7 ER, 1 HB, 3 BB, 0 K. If they can stash him on their 25-man roster with him pitching like that, more power to them, but he's got to turn it around big time. They've got J.J. Putz, Heath Bell, Brad Ziegler, Tony Sipp, Josh Collmenter, David Hernandez, Matt Reynolds and probably one of Wade Miley/Pat Corbin whoever doesn't make the rotation all ahead of him. If things fall right with injuries or trades, he could stick, but for me the odds are long and getting longer with every poor performance Peralta delivers.
  15. Yeah, it's possible to come up with a justification for just about anyone. At this point, I'm going with who I perceive has the highest ceiling. Frandy de la Rosa Josh Conway Willson Contraras I'm interested to see, whether they voted for them or not, who people think has the highest ceiling of the guys that are left.
  16. I think what they see in Raley that they don't see in Struck or Hatley is left-handedness. Southpaws are indeed rare, which I guess you could factor into their value as a prospect and, thus, rank a lefty higher simply by virtue of them being a lefty. But we're at #41, and at this point this is all about who has a better ceiling. In a purely logical discussion about the value of a AAA 23-25 year old who hopes to stick around in the majors for a while versus a 17-18 year old IFA shortstop with a chance to be somebody, you could probably make a decent case for the AAA player. But, for me, logic left this discussion after the top 20 players. And so, I'm bringing the sexy back with guys who could actually be somebody still... Carlos Penalver Frandy de la Rosa Josh Conway
  17. One of the doubts I have about him he alone can't erase. Overuse. Last night was the exception. He was so dominant that even though he went nine, he did it on just 105 pitches. For me, right now, if Appel doesn't distinguish himself as the obvious choice but is in a group with 1 or 2 others, I more inclined to go with one of the others because of that concern.
  18. If they can make Mesa or Boise by 19, then they are more than on track with stateside high school draftees. I too am in agreement with going "all-projectability all the time". It's easy enough to find and develop mid-to-back end of the rotation guys in the draft. Signing kids at such a young age it's difficult to really know what you're getting so you might as well as aim high.
  19. Interesting...
  20. Man, I'm sorry to say it, but you really don't know what you're talking about here. Golden will be 21 all year long and will likely be at Kane County where he will be basically age appropriate. He's a 2nd round pick who has been injured a lot but flashed an IsoD of .090 and an SLG of .420 as a 19 year old in Boise. Carlos Rodriguez is a 17 year old diminutive lefty who was just signed a year ago and put up eye-popping numbers last season, albeit at a level where numbers don't mean a whole lot. And Dunston Jr. was just drafted in 2011 as an overslot 11th rounder with terrific athleticism. What reason would the Cubs possibly have to simply release these guys before February 2014?
  21. Here's BA's write up on the trade. It is interesting to note that they wouldn't have normally commented on such a minor deal "but due to the unique nature of the 17-year-old righties acquired, we decided to break format and cover the transaction in Trade Central."
  22. I am a fan of this strategy. When you have a guy who is a marginal major leaguer but can help a team with playoff aspirations, the younger the players are you get in return, the higher the ceiling they are likely to have. Any low risk high reward trades are good ones at this point in a rebuild.
  23. Given all the electronic advances on the farm, this shouldn't be surprising but I am still super impressed by this news. Yes. I think the quantitative record-keeping is going to really impact the way they evaluate, and train. I think it's a pretty big deal. Plate discipline analysis will go a whole lot deeper than the W/K kind of assessment that's about the best we fans can use. I also think having the comprehensive video records of every pitch is also a big deal. Not like days when a bigwig makes a couple of 3-day visits, and gets a skewed opinion on a guy if he happens to slump or happens to hit a couple of HR's. This is awesome news. I love what the Ricketts family and the FO are spending their money on. Tom Tango. Cameras in every stadium. A pitchFX guy. Derek Johnson. Needed and aesthetic improvements to Wrigley. The Triangle building. A hotel. New Dominican and spring training facilities. All of these things will improve revenue and performance.
