  1. No, there really isn't. Our outfield (overall) is pathetic, our infield is average at best, and our pitching is absolutely atrocious. A handful are having down years, but most of what's happened is because we do not have enough talent in those positions. Lee/walker/cedeno/ramirez would be above average if ramirez was playing up to standards. That infield looks good on paper.
  2. You forgot Zambrano. If he's not the definition of "untradeable," I don't know what is. I'd say that Neifi is the definition of untradable. We have very different definitions.
  3. READ THIS: ANDERSON HAS A HIGHER ON BASE PERCENTAGE THAN JUAN URIBE WHO CARES ABOUT HIS 177 AVERAGE, HE'S HITTING BETTER THAN URIBE. But there's no difference between an intentional walk and a regular walk here. Batting average is the only factor to consider (aside from bunting, potential for sac flies, etc) when you're thinking about an IBB.
  4. Aramis with a pathetic bloop single that scores pierre. Now the cubs have 2 cheap hits in the first
  5. Did dye miss home with his slide? That was pathetic, given that there was no reason to slide and no one around home plate
  6. Bloop, ball off of diving ronny, ball past diving lee (He usually gets that one)
  7. Brenly: I think AJ gets booed at family reunions
  8. He's coming off an injury apparently and he was feeling like he might have aggravated it. Apparently.
  9. How does Pierre not catch that thing? at no point did he run for that
  10. Cheap strike 3. I keep accidentally rooting for the cubs, too
  11. How do you define "respectable", Dusty? Playing .500 for the rest of the season? Really getting a "run" going and flirting with getting back to .500? Either is not "respectable" in my opinion with a $100 million payroll, fool. Either way, Dusty has now said A) they're out of the race and B) his goal is not to put the team in the best position to win next year, but to make himself look as good as possible. This is not something a gm can tollerate.
  12. The first commercial on the radio was for a new prescription heartburn drug. I think they found the right audience.
  13. I guess you just didn't look at the numbers. His "clutch" stats aren't routinely better than his regular stats. Sometimes they are a little better, sometimes a little worse, and in the case of this year, his close and late are much worse. He's the same hitter virtually all the time. And that's a very good hitter. So, when you give a very good hitter lots of opportunities to have a bit clutch hits, which is what a great team with great team OBP will give a guy, you will have numerous instances where he'll come through. You'll also have a lot of times when he'll fail, just like every ballplayer has lots of times when they fail. In what universe is .326 .408 .724 worse than 297 .383 .600? Runners on and risp you know he'll have a higher OBP/lower slg. And that's not "sometimes", that's "every year you posted"
  14. I jumped to rooting against them about 10 days ago. It's a shame that their management is so clueless that it will take horrible failures to improve the team, but that's the way it is.
  15. Ortiz 2006 Overall .264 .374 .551 Runners on .298 .388 .583 RISP .279 .398 .523 Close and late .231 .286 .667 2003-2005 Overall .297 .383 .600 Runners on .309 .409 .575 RISP .328 .425 .555 Close and late .326 .408 .724 When you are a really good player, and you player for a really good team that is really popular and really emphasizes OBP, you are going to have a lot of chances to have meaningful hits. All it takes is a handful of walk offs or other heroics to give you the label (just as Jim Leyritz), and the more chances you get more likely you'll cash in on a few. As long as your failures don't stick out too much, and your team enjoys success, they will forget those and concentrate on the big ones. This explains why Jeter is excused for coming up short so often and considered clutch, even though his postseason numbers mirror his regular seasons and he has come up short repeatedly in recent postseasons. I don't get your argument. "Here are some numbers showing that he's been better in the clutch. Then I will say that you probably just think he's better in the clutch because of the way memories/ESPN work" edit: I guess it would make sense if you went all out and found numbers for many of his teammates showing they, too, had good clutch numbers
  16. In the last year of their existence (1952), there were 8 teams in a league. (I don't know what year you're talking about, so that's what I used) Last I checked, we're only in a 6 team division. And the Braves were further behind when they turned it around than we are (and won the league by 10 games). Huge difference between being the #15 team and the #8 team or whatever they were (just what were they, anyway? what year?). They're at a flatter part of the curve. Edit: and 1914??? There have been literally thousands of team-seasons played since then Further edit: and they were only 11 games below .500 at worst
  17. In the last year of their existence (1952), there were 8 teams in a league. (I don't know what year you're talking about, so that's what I used)
  18. We have the third worst record in all of baseball. We stink. While it is possible for the Cubs to play better, it's ridiculous to assume that the other teams in the league will play bad enough for the Cubs to pass them. I have never said it was going to happen. I'm just saying it is possible teams have done it before. I assume the Cubs will continue to stink, but that is only an assumption, sometimes they can be wrong. Hence the reason they are not called facts. I also assume Hendry will resign Baker. And I definitely hope that assumption is not right. The harm: loss of trade value. Lost development potential of young players. When was the last time a team in 15th place at the end of june made the playoffs? I'm going to guess "never" (partially because 15th place isn't that old a position) Has it ever happened 5th to first in a 5 team division? doubt it
  19. The Astros had a much better team too. Not if we can get Pagan back soon
  20. they need to win 69% of their games over more than half a season to get to 90 wins. That's 111 win pace. We've passed "well, the Astros did it" levels here
  21. is he telling us he's superman with that last one? i'm confused. Wow, am I glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read this, might have lost a laptop. Instantly my new favorite Baker quote. Maybe he's planning on becoming a Kwisatz Haderach? But hey, if Baker wants to drink the Water of Life, I won't stop him
  22. I actually applauded when I read this. I hope it's not too hot. If I took a sign, it would read "I'm booing Dusty and Hendry"
  23. Rocker insulted a powerful city. Guillen insulted someone everyone dislikes.
  24. 1. This isn't Venezuela - it's America. You've lived here long enough to understand what our words mean. 2. I didn't realize hateful slurs had different meanings in different regions. I know one of the WNBA's biggest stars, Swoopes, is openly gay, but is that really something to list to prove you're not homophobic - women's basketball? Madonna? His entire "apology" is fantastic and hillarious. First, the venezuela thing. It's a defense that a derogatory term for homosexual has different connotations in his home country that he's lived out of for most of his life? (example: When I said the team played like crap, I meant "crap" in the way we meant it back home, that they literally smelled bad while playing) Secondly, the WNBA, Madonna, and gay friends... It's like a parody of an apology. And rabbit, my guess on the WNBA is that he's aware of how homosexual the fan base for it is. It actively markets to the homosexual community.
