  1. Players that get to the level of Kerry Wood, don't do so solely for financial gain. Yeah he's set financially, but if you've every played a sport, you know there is a competetive fire/desire innate within. I'm sure he wants to play and win a WS. As merely a very good high school athlete, all I wanted to do was win. Downtime between seasons sucked. You do get some athletes that only care about money, but Woody has never struck me that way. I was a successful high school and college athlete (golf) so I understand the competitive drive. If you read my post again, I never said that Wood is a mooch or greedy, I said that he successfully played and beat the system. I am sure he wants to win as much as anyone. But you also said he doesn't care about his future. I seriously doubt that's true.
  2. I hadn't heard that Bud was stepping down this year, but I have seen MacPhail mentioned as a candidate several times in the past.
  3. Baker. Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but I'm starting to think that the lack of an extension to this point means that Hendry is having second thoughts about Dusty being the right manager for the Cubs.
  4. I thought you were just here for the Bud Light.

  6. Again, what you're not grasping is that all that matters is that the trade would help the Cubs. As long as a trade would help the Cubs, it does NOT matter if it would also help the Sox. Hendry's job is to improve the Cubs, period, not to avoid improving the Sox.
  7. Interestingly, every Cub affiliate is playing at home. I don't keep track of such things, but I doubt that happens often (especially during the part of the year that the short-season teams are playing too).
  8. My understanding is that, if Blanco were injured, Nevin would move behind the plate for the rest of that game and Soto or Reyes would be called up for the next game.
  9. Blanco was my pick today in the mlb.com Beat the Streak contest. And he didn't let me down.
  10. All 4 of these guys are bums. And what support do you have for that strong accusation?
  11. Actually, that's not true. He did have one stint on the DL, in his rookie season (2002) due to an elbow injury. I remember at the time there was concern that he might have needed TJS, but it turned out to be just a strain.
  12. No he isn't. He's currently on the 15-day DL, and when he returns he will almost certainly be in the bullpen after his last disastrous start. He himself acknowledged as much after that start.
  13. I'd like to see the Cubs bring him up and commit to giving him at least five starts so he doesn't feel the pressure to pitch great the first time out. If he struggles again this time, maybe it will be time to start really wondering about his major league potential.
  14. I reserved Everett and replaced him with Murton since Everett isn't starting in the games played in NL parks. I also reserved Meche and replaced him with Burnett, who is coming off the DL tomorrow. Hopefully this time he'll stay healthy, but I'm not holding my breath for that.
  15. I'm now back up to six games, and I have Henry Blanco to thank for that. :D
  16. And former Cub Dave Clark (primarily a pinch hitter) is one of the World Team coaches. I like the Futures Game better than the AAA All-Star game because the Futures Game just includes prospects, while the AAA All-Star Game can include players who are having good seasons in the minors but are basically AAAA players with no real major league future.
  17. I'm not positive, but I believe the maximum 20% cut only applies to players who are not yet eligible for free agency. That would prevent a team from severely cutting a player's salary when the player can't go elsewhere. When a player is a free agent, however, I don't think there is a maximum cut, since the player could choose to go elsewhere if he isn't willing to accept the cut. I could be wrong, but that's how I think it works.
  18. He was on my team last year, and I finished 2nd (out of 16 teams) in the playoffs. Hmm.....
  19. When I lived farther east in North Carolina than I do now (from 1994 through 2000) I was a fan of the Kinston Indians (high-A Carolina League) because I lived about a half hour away. I went to a few of their games each year. I did root for their former players when they reached the major leagues (some of their players I watched include Bartolo Colon, Jaret Wright, Danny Graves, Richie Sexton, Russell Branyan, Enrique Wilson :pukel: , and Damian Jackson :pukel: ). However, I didn't become a fan of the Cleveland Indians. Now I'm a little over an hour away from the Durham Bulls and root for them, but I'm not a Devil Rays fan. (I also live about an hour from the Carolina Mudcats, but I can't root for them because they're a divisional rival of the Djaxx).
  20. You're confusing Cubs fans' attitude with Sox fans. It's Sox fans who care more about seeing the other team fail than seeing their team succeed (or at least that's the stereotype many people on this board have). Cub fans, however, care about one thing: Ending a nearly century old drought and winning a World Series. That means Cub fans would be in favor of any trade that would bring the Cubs closer to the promised land. If that trade also benefits the other team, so be it. Cub fans would NOT be in favor of a trade that's less likely to help them reach the World Series just to stick it to the Sox.
  21. Jeesh, you actually expect me to be reading clearly after 2:00 A.M.?
  22. Only if we'd get better (or at least equal) value from another team as compared to what we'd get from the Sox.NO!! I would be willling to get a little less in return from another team as long as the players would make a good impact, than help out the White Sox and get some players who are only a little better. It's the principles. Sorry, but the principle is that you get the best value for YOUR team; you don't worry about how it will impact another team (with the possible exception of teams within your division). Improving the White Sox will not make the Cubs weaker, so if the best value you can get comes from the Sox that's who you trade with, period, case closed.
  23. Why? So we can trade him? How long is his contract for, and how many starts do you think he'll take away from Marshall? I don't think it would be a bad thing if Miller did take some starts away from Marshall. Marshall was injured most of last year, so it would be good to somewhat limit his pitching this year (much like they did with Prior in 2002 when they shut him down for about the last month). Miller is signed for just this season. Unlike similar situations in previous years (Dempster, Williamson) the Cubs don't have an option on Miller for next year.
  24. Only if we'd get better (or at least equal) value from another team as compared to what we'd get from the Sox.
  25. Exactly, and in the past baseball has looked the other way in certain circumstances (usually similar to Sammy's, where a player has first-round talent but drops due to signability or similar issues). And as you imply, even if there were no special circumstances the guidelines are recommendations, not enforceable rules. Therefore $elig could get as angry as he wants to, but he can't penalize the Cubs in any way because they're not breaking any rules. If baseball wants enforceable rules about maximum bonuses, that would have to be negotiated with the union as part of the CBA. Interesting that we can now talk about "Sammy" and be referring to somebody other than Sosa. How times have changed. :D
