  1. Doesn't surprise me at all. If the Cubs were at full strength they could afford to go a day or so without a player in order to avoid putting him on the DL. With Lee serving his suspension, however, they've already lost that flexibility. If Ward and/or Floyd have to miss any time (even if just a day or two) they need to go on the DL so the spot can be filled. You can't play with what in effect is a 23-man roster, especially with 12 pitchers.
  2. If I understand my rules, the PTBNL cannot be Nady. Hmm why is that? Link. That rule must actually have been instituted long after the Chiti incident, because in the 1980s the Cubs traded Dickie Noles to the Tigers for Dickie Noles. Same scenerio; Noles was traded for a PTBNL, and then Noles was returned to the Cubs as the PTBNL.
  3. Haha, poor cardinals. I would almost feel bad for them if this wasn't just so hilarious. Walt Jocketty mortgaged the future to win the World Series. I wish Hendry would do the same. The trouble comes when you mortgage the future and miss the championship. No he didn't. He mortgaged the future because he's not that great of a GM. Yet, they manage to win the division every year. Until this year. :D
  4. Kroeger is not a good option for a few days, because he's not on the 40-man roster. The best choice for a few days would be someone who's already on the 40-man roster and who has already used this as an option year.
  5. I thought it was shoulder surgery (maybe labrum).
  6. It will be ineteresting to see if any players are held out of Iowa's lineup tonight. That may be a clue as to who will be called up in the event Floyd and/or Ward go on the DL.
  7. Since this is a minor league question I moved it to the Minor Leagues forum. One of the minor league announcers may know this. My guess is that players on rehab assignments don't count against minor league rosters, since they're on the major league DL at the time and may be with the minor league team for a few days. It would make things hard on a minor league team to have a pitcher who may only pitch one inning count against the roster.
  8. Come on, quit exaggerating. He can't be a day over 75.
  9. Ryan Dempster in the rotation... And accompaning that, Guzman as closer.
  10. With the roster already short due to Lee's suspension, they simply can't afford to carry players who are "day-to-day" (unless they're at least able to pinch hit). You hate to put a player on the 15-day DL if they'll be unable to play for 2 or 3 days, but the Cubs may simply have no choice (especially if Ward and Floyd are both in that situation). If it's just one day they may be able to make do by bringing up a player just for tomorrow, delaying Dempster's return by one day, and living with an 11 man staff for a day, but beyond that I think they'd have to put at least one of them on the DL. Lee's dropping of the appeal and serving his suspension, which I thought made perfect sense at the time, now doesn't look so good in hindsight (especially since the reports that Lee would have missed 2 or 3 games anyway have since been refuted).
  11. Cubs won't win the division anyway. Wildcard is more likely. I like San Diego's ability to stay on top less than the Brewers, Dbacks will fade. Braves will be there, but with help, the Cubs are a better team. With Sheets out you don't think the Cubs can make up 3 games? I've managed to finally start thinking positive about this team... Considering how much the Cubs have made up on the Brewers recently even before Sheets' injury I certainly think they can make up the remainder with over two months remaining in the season.
  12. I smell false alarm. Even if the trade wasn't going to be finalized until after the game, I doubt the Brewers would play Gwynn today to protect against the possibility of his getting injured and having the trade blow up.
  13. Second stipulation: The returning PTBNL must not be Izturis. Good point; we don't want this to be Dickie Noles for Dickie Noles Part 2. :D
  14. Not for long. New CEO coming in in the fall. I expect (pray for?) wholesale changes. If I recall, in fact, it was during the recent Cubs' series at Pittsburgh (right before the break) that he announced he was stepping down.
  15. Maybe they are considering that, if they're trying to trade Jack Wilson. which is hilarious, since izturis is more or less a hispanic version of jack wilson I agree, but apparently Pittsburgh sees something in him.
  16. Maybe they are considering that, if they're trying to trade Jack Wilson.
  17. And I believe we later got Brown back again. as well as hill Hill's deal was voided shortly after that because of injury, though. That's why I didn't mention him.
  18. Yeah, I think they chose Fox because he's the best option of people that could handle 1B, and then send him back when Dempster comes off the DL. It's more likely they'll send Gallagher down tomorrow when Dempster is activated' otherwise they'd have 13 pitchers. I think a more likely scenerio is that Fox stays up this weekend while Lee is serving his suspension, then when Lee returns next Tuesday Fox goes back down and Cedeno comes up.
  19. Once again we deal with Hendry's favorite trading partner. :D
  20. True; I'd mentioned in an earlier post in this thread that I thought they might transfer Blanco to the 60-day DL to make room on the 40-man. Of course, if an Izturis trade is completed before game time, that might make room on the 40-man (depending on what the Cubs get back in return). If there's any fire behind this Izturis smoke, then they may just DFA him even if a trade has not been completed (as with Bowen). Very good point, but there's a difference I believe. Bowen wasn't the point of that trade, it was to acquire Kendall, so to speak. The point of this proposed deal would appear to be to trade away Izturis. If you DFA him then I'd think the chances of that type of deal happening would go down. Not if the basics of the trade have already been worked out and they're just hammering out details.

That wouldn't surprise me, and if so I think that would take care of the 40-man issue (I don't think players who have been DFA'd count against the 40-man, but I'm not sure about that).
  22. Except simply sending Gallagher down doesn't open a spot for Fox on the 40-man. They're going to need to create openings on both the 40- and the 25-man rosters.
