  1. No boy, but how about a man?
  2. I'm glad those days are over for the Colts. Here's to finishing second to the Bears in the Super Bowl. Fixed. :D
  3. How many catchers are above avg. hitters? If you wait for that, you'll be spending a ton in FA, trading a large % of your farm, or still waiting. If he does well defensively, can hit in the .260-.280 range with some pop with a good eye at the plate, he'll be fine there and better than what they've had since the 93' season w/Wilkins and before that Davis. He's had a nice year this year indeed. Has it been that much of a spike over the rest of his career? Is it possible he's had help and that's why the Cubs didn't call him up before Hill? Are you talking about the type of "help" Rick Ankiel may have had? I'd like to think not, but these days I don't think you can rule out that possibility for anyone.
  4. Yes; he was signed to a two-year contract this past offseason. Bad move by Hendry. I'm sure he would have agreed to a one-year deal, and if he wouldn't they could have found someone else who would have to fill the same role.
  5. The Smokies finished third for the second half of the season, but were second in the division for the entire season. Except for AAA, the full-season levels in the minor leagues are divided into two halves. I think this is largely because, with the draft in mid-season and frequent mid-season promotions, the makeup of a team in the second half may be substantially different than in the first half, possibly enough so as to make it virtually a different team. A perfect example of that is Mississippi, in the same league but opposite division as the Smokies. Mississippi finished first in the division for the first half, but because they had a lot of players promoted to AAA, they finished dead last the second half. As far as the playoffs are concerned, it works differently for different leagues. In the Southern League two teams qualify from each division. If a different team wins each half (as in the South Division that year) those two teams make the playoffs. If the same team wins both halves (as Huntsville did in the North Division) then the other playoff team is the team with the second best record for the entire year, not the second half. And even though Chattanooga finished a game ahead of the Smokies in the second half Tennessee finished 8 games ahead of Chattanooga in the first half. Therefore when you put it together to determine the second playoff team the Smokies were 7 games ahead.
  6. One of the best sports soundbites ever.
  7. And I believe that has to be the 60-day DL, not 15. If the Cubs were to transfer Pagan to the 60-day then Soto could replace him.
  8. Fortunately for me, I tend to not care what Lou Holtz thinks Does anybody not named Lou Holtz care what Lou Holtz thinks? :D
  9. New President/DEO coming in. Gives him the clean slate to hire his own man. That's what I was thinking. The dirty work is done so the new President doesn't have to yield the axe.
  10. Southern League Radio Broadcaster of the Year.
  11. Ray gives new meaning to the term Burger King. Imagine all the cheeseburgers sold in Milwaukee when King and Quevedo were on the team at the same time. :D
  12. Fixed. Double fixed Get Igor from Young Frankenstein to instruct them: "Walk this way." :D
  13. Wait a sec - We didn't come in last place last year! :-# Cubs fans know that. :D
  14. Last year someone else started an NSBB league for this contest. Several people joined, but by the end of the season only 2 or 3 were still participating.
  15. Someone needs to instruct Patterson on how to get to the park on time.
  16. I'm not sure about all the details, but I think it's mainly just a procedural move. When a player isn't on the 40-man roster his contract is actually owned by the minor league team. Therefore when the major league team wants to call him up they actually need to purchase his contract from the minor league team in order to have his rights (the term "selected" is also sometimes used). Conversely, if a player is on the 40-man roster but has been optioned to the minor leagues, the major league does own his contract, so if he's called up the term "recalled" is used.
  17. No need to be criticizing posters for where they start a thread. If the mods think a thread is better suited for another forum we'll move it.
  18. Dempster's human. The very best relievers have a horrible outing now and then. This game sucked, because the Cubs don't have the cushion to be able to afford blowing a game like this. However, Dempster has been good on the whole, and he's been very good lately until today. Last year he had a bad season. This year he's had a good season with an occasional stinker here and there.
  19. A couple of other possibilities might be Herb Score and Tony Conigliaro if they hadn't suffered injuries. Neither of them had records comparable to the players included in the poll because they were injured when they were still young, but they had very careers going at the time of their injuries.
  20. Alan Dunn was minor league pitching coordinator (much like Dave Keller is minor league hitting coordinator). However, he was recently hired by another team as bullpen coach at the major league level (I believe by the Orioles, but I'm not positive). I'm not sure if he's been replaced in the Cubs' system yet or if it was close enough to the end of the minor league season that they're waiting until the offseason.
  21. Just be glad it didn't also give you Corey Hart, singer. :D
  22. huh? Is that possible? That stat is the number of runs a team would score if they had a lineup made up entirely of that player. In this case, a lineup made up of 9 Geovany Soto's in AAA would score 10.46 runs per game. Of course, that doesn't say how many runs a team of 9 Soto's would give up. A Soto pitching, another Soto playing CF, etc. might be quite an adventure. :D
  23. Not within the past 25 years, but Bill Mazeroski. One World Series HR does not a Hall of Famer make.
  24. And, naturally, the Cubs had to sign him AFTER injuries ruined him.
