  1. On the other hand, IU is probably dedicating this season to Hep's memory and is motivated to do their best each week. IU wins.
  2. No we don't. We do know who Geovany Soto is, though.
  3. Has anybody seen any confirmation that Guzman needs TJS? As of this morning I still haven't seen any word about it on cubs.com, chicagosports.com, or espn.com.
  4. I'm surprised Andy hasn't chimed in on this yet, but Ball State beat Navy in an amazing game. I was able to watch it on CSTV. Ball State led 21-7 at one point, but Navy came back and took the lead. BSU then tied it, and blocked a Navy field goal attempt at the end of regulation to protect the tie and send the game into OT. Navy got the ball at the start of OT, but BSU recovered a fumble on the very first play, then a few plays later kicked a field goal to win 34-31. My three favorite college teams are Ball State, Indiana, and Kentucky, and they could all be bowl bound this year.
  5. I doubt Michigan will be ranked yet, but they'll probably get some votes. I don't think beating a winless Notre Dame team is enough to overcome two stinkers, regardless of how much the margin of victory is. It's a step in the road back though.
  6. Kentucky's definitely in the Top 25 next week, no question about it. An undefeated season to date with a win over a Top 10 team makes it a complete no-brainer. If the voters don't want to drop anyone other than Tennessee out they can always rank 26 teams by creating a tie for #25.
  7. You're right about that. Texeira would have likely been considered as well.
  8. I called the UK over Louisville upset today. Unfortunately I only gave it 1 confidence point.
  9. I think the antitrust exemption would allow for MLB to get the owner it wants, but that fiduciary duty is going to be a hell of a sticking point. I don't know if other teams have been sold under these circumstances before, but I'm willing to guess the antitrust exemption would not prevent MLB from getting slapped with a potentially successful lawsuit for interfering with that duty. As the article mentions, this is an unusual situation. I'd have to look into it more, though. To me this seems different that previous sales due to the Trib being a public corporation. Antitrust exemption or not, the Trib's stockholders certainly have a right to get the most possible from the sale of their stock. What seems to me like a logical solution would be that the owners can veto a sale, but they would then be liable to make up the difference between the high bid and what the team actually sells for. It would then be up to the owners to decide if they're so opposed to the high bidder that they're willing to make up the difference.
  10. I agree; Ward was a great signing. I believe they have an option on him for 2008; if so they BETTER exercise it.
  11. Apparently he can. Under what I thought were the rules he wouldn't have been (unless the Cubs transfer Pagan to the 60-day DL to allow a position player from the system replace him). However, other posters have mentioned that it is allowable, and posted a link to an article (I believe from a Boston paper) supporting that. The rules apparently changed as a result of the new CBA.
  12. The Cubs have now won 4 in a row, on the road no less. They could be starting another run like they had in June/July. It's certainly not definite yet, but they could win the division quite comfortably. I'd like to see them clinch it before the final weekend so they can rest key players and have the rotation set up for the playoffs. Anything can happen once they make the playoffs.
  13. I was too. I live close enough to Atlanta that I might have been able to get to one of the games if they played in Atlanta during the weekend.
  14. You're joking, right? I'll admit he made some good signings this past offseason, but that doesn't undo the damage he did in 2005 and 2006. The Cubs still are far behind where they were in 2003 and 2004; they just have the good fortune this year to be the least crappy in a crappy division. He doesn't deserve an extension simply for partially recovering from his past incompetence.
  15. Actually, the appropriate word is WHEN. :D
  16. I vote for Charlotte. And it has to be an NL team so the Cubs come every year. :D
  17. I don't fault Lou for using Dempster tonight. The game turned so suddenly, there might not have been enough time to warm up another reliever after the Cubs increased the lead from 1 to 4.
  18. This goes back several years, but I'd have to say Al Hrabosky and his Mad Hungarian ritual.
  19. I used to bring cub scouts to games all the time and you're right, most of the time they were running around and mostly focused on food.
  20. I think the 27th will be either a Marshall or Trachsel start. In a perfect world, the Cubs win 12-11 tonight and Trachsel is DFAed after the game. No. In a perfect world Trachsel trips on his way to the bullpen mound for pregame warmups, hurts himself, and can't even start the game today. Then Marshall is plugged in to replace him, pitches his best game of the year, and returns to the rotation for good. And then who starts the other game of the double header on Saturday? I'd forgotten about that. Fortunately Good Trachsel made an appearance and made it a moot point.

  22. Looks like the article is gone now.
  23. I'm a Bears fan, but I don't care about them nearly as much as I do about the Cubs, so I'm with you here. I would much rather discuss football here with other Cubs fans who have different football allegiances than sign up for a Bears-only board, so it'll still be a while before I show up on WCFB. It isn't a Bears only board, though. Even though it's primarily intended for Bears fans, fans of other teams are welcome there just as they are here. And there's a subforum set up specifically for discussions about other teams.
  24. I'm not sure if it's luck or what, but Ryan's better at the same philosophy. If the Cubs were a little better over Hendry's regime, they would have had more success. I think a little can go a long way. Of course, it would help if the Cubs could produce Mauer, Morneau, Santana, Garza, etc. Well the Cubs could've had Mauer instead of Prior...:P How? Uh..yeah nevermind...I was thinking the Cubs had passed on Mauer for Prior...it was the Twins passing on Prior for Mauer, wasn't it? Yes. The Twins had the first pick and the Cubs were second. The Twins chose Mauer over Prior because they thought they'd be more likely to be able to sign Mauer and because Mauer was local.
