  1. So the redskins give up a 3rd and 4th for Brandon Lloyd a couple years ago and a 2nd and 7th for Jason Taylor this year. Hmmm is Snyder learning?
  2. I much rather Soriano get a game or two in the minors before being activated. I want Soriano back at 100%, not 85%. If Fonzie's at 85 I want him back. What I don't want is the utter disaster that he was when he came back in early May from his first injury. If Sori hits a homer or gets a couple hits in Mesa then you mine-as-well call him up because he is going to perform any better than that with an extra game or two.
  3. and Ferentz hasn't been shy about punishing them, even for minor drinking violations Then it's hard to blame him for their problems. If a coach disciplines the players when they screw up and they continue to cause problems, there's really nothing a coach can do. There's alot that goes not having players do stupid stuff. Discipline is one but so is gaining respect, teaching, and recruiting good kids. I don't put too much of the blame on a coach (at most it is 50% his fault and in most cases I would put it somewhere between 10-20%) but if a coach has repeated problems with players getting in trouble then there is quite a bit of blame on the coach. Note I said players not player. One player getting in trouble 5 times is not the same as 5 players getting in trouble once each. In Tiller's reign at Purdue he has had quite a few off field issues and he rarely does harsh punishment so it encourages it. He gets a lot of the blame in my eyes for it. A good example of Tiller's easiness is Kirsch. Kirsch got in trouble three times while at Purdue and one of them was him getting drunk at a fraternity that he didn't belong to. According to a player on the team who was there and is a good friend of my dad's Kirsch wanted a girl that was with one of the frat guys and when she refused he smacked her. The frat guys starting punching him and the football players there had to break it up and get kirsch out of there. They couldn't before the cops arrived. What did Tiller do to Kirsch. Nothing. That's the way it is with him. If he loves you and will never punish you but the moment you anger him he is looking for any excuse to punish/bench you. Ferentz isn't this type of coach yet he still has continued problems with players. That would make it one of two things to me. He's lost the repsect of some players or he is reeping what he has sewn from the type of players he recruited.
  4. Ankiel is included because he was a dominant pitcher for one season (was it even that) and then bombed as bad as anyone has seen only to resurface a few years later has a guy who might hit 40 home runs. Top my knowledge no one has ever done what he has done and the ridiculousness of it is very very high.
  5. That goes both ways. I really don't see how it is hard to understand that someone who produced in the minors, and produced in a late season call up and is now doing well is different than a guy who came out of nowhere to all of a sudden be very good or came back from the dead or has had his most injury free season ever in his life. Yes its true two years ago many people didn't expect a whole lot of Soto but that is way different from the others we have talked about in this thread. They are related but different. Think Eli/Peyton and then Cooper.

I wasn't really in need of an answer and I fail to see why all that matters. From the expectations people had of Soto coming into this season I would say he has been slightly worse than them (still great but like i said people expected at the least a high avg.), which is why he shouldn't be included in this conversation. You're missing the point. Look at Soto's minor league stats before 2007. Where do those stats do you see a guy, who when he gets to the majors, will have 20-25 HR power and a .874 OPS? It's not necessarily what Soto's done this year, but what he had done in his 6 minor league seasons before 2007. I don't know where he was ranked exactly but I'm sure somebody has some old prospect handbook, but I'm guessing that Soto wasn't ranked too highly before the 2007 season by anybody who evaluates prospects. I know that's your point but someone who was an MVP of AAA league prior to his first callup should never ever be lumped into the same catagory as the guys who have come out of no where to be very good dependable players at the major league level playing the same or better than they did in AAA. Soto doesn't belong in this conversation.
  7. They'll still beat Penn State. at least we have a QB and a ref with gambling issues on your side to steal a victory from the team that should have won

  9. I haven't kept track, but the number is way too high. Ferentz is in absolutely no danger of being let go and is still well liked. coaching has rarely ever been the issue, lately it's been injuries (see the RB situation in 2004) and suspensions that have left him with little to no depth. Well suspensions are partially a coach's fault. You recruit the players plus a good coach controls his players which can be done in many different ways. It could be Ferentz is like Tiller when it comes to off-field stuff. Back around Montrelle Lowe's time at Purdue I began to question Tiller because every year Lowe was here Tiller said he would start then he wouldn't until about mid season and would finish with 900+ yards. Tiller after each of his first three seasons publically said he was sorry and he would start from the beginning the next year. Then his senior year Lowe was voted team captain by his teammates only to have Tiller not start him and ontop of that refuse to even play him. He had something like 12 carries his senior year. Who started in his place? Joey Harris. The following year (his senior year) Harris got academically ineligible (the fan team shirts for that year had him on the back and because he was kicked his face had to be removed so the shirts that year had a faceless guy in a closeup of his face juking with a helmet on). What did Tiller have to say about Harris getting ineligible? "It's not my job to make them get their grades. My job is to win football games." Never supported him since. Maybe Ferentz has this type of attitude and because of it his players act up off the field.
  10. who's your uncle?
  11. The story I read on ESPN talked about their were seven bids in the first stage but it is now three in this stage. Maybe I misread (wasn't written all too well because it was rather confusing).
  12. I'm pretty torn because both Jack and Heath were really good and for my reasons I will have to use the spoiler since some stuff I mention could reveal some things about the new movie.
  13. ooo GeoThermal is good. Alludes to him being good and for those of you who have been doing it can be taken as him being hot in a non baseball way (still don't quite understand the people wo have sigs talking about his sexiness but thats just me).
  14. I'm going to go with the consensus pick Vikings Packers Bears Lions Not sure if the Packers grab a WC spot yet...but I'm leaning towards no. That's my irrational Packer hate speaking though probably. Name 5 teams in the NFC that are better than the Packers. You can't do it. name five teams that people thought would be worse than packers going into last year. You can't do it. Get my point? Exactly. Honestly as I mentioned before, I am letting my irrational hate of the Packers change my opinion. But to be honest, no one can really predict how the Packers do this year. They have a solid defense, but so did the Bears last year and even this year. If you would have told me the Bears would have finished under .500 last year I would have laughed in your face. The key is, they are replacing a stellar QB with an unproven one. Not many people can argue that the QB position is the most important in football, heck maybe even sports. As a Bears fan, I know how hard it is to find a good QB. So what if Rogers looked good for 3 quarters against Dallas last year. Rex Grossman owned the NFL for all of September of 06 and look where that got him. The Superbowl? ohh wait sorry I get you point. I actually hate Grossman (purdue fan and non/somewhat anti Bear fan)

  16. That would be like swatting a fly with a sledge hammer. or ban hammer
  17. Daric Barton. Congrats to Barton and the A's. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3496609
  18. He would probably fly away to never never return.
  19. I don't see how Soto and Theriot are anywhere close or why Soto is even in this discussion. He was MVP of AAA last year, and dominanted once called up last year. His expectations were ridiculous coming into the year and while he's been great I would say about half of the people on this board expected .320+ avg 30+ hr's. He's only batting .288 and is one pace for slightly below 30 hr's (not to mention barely 100 rbis and not even 70 runs). Most of those are a result of where he bats in the order but the fact still remains compared to the ungodly expectations he had coming in (most of them way over blown) he has performed right to them or below. He is actually right at what I expected. I thought he would hit about .290-.300 with high 20's hr's. I did expect his OBP to be about 15 points higher though. As for Theriot ... I've probably supported him more than anyone else on here (especially before the season) but I didn't expect him to be hitting .320. I expected him to hit about .290 and be our best option for a SS. I also expected his OBP to be around .365-.370 and not .395.
