1. Seriously... How can you accurately determine if a pitch is over the plate at that angle?
2. Vanover is literally calling balls and strikes from behind the left handed batters box.
3. All the horsefeathers strike calls aside, Klubers 2-seamer is pretty horsefeathering amazing.
4. I hope Chevy goes under just so I never have to watch another one of their horsefeathering commercials ever again.
5. He just wants a Kirk Gibson moment. He won't get it, Schwarber will beat him to the punch.
6. Well lookie what we have here, a World Series thread!
7. Jake pretty much dropped usage on both his slider and his curveball in favor of his sinker this year. Methinks he was trying to save his arm, if not for the postseason (which hasn't helped) then for next year when he's pitching for a pay day. But even then the amount of sliders he threw in 2015 was 28%. For reference the poster child for slider abuse, Tyson Ross, threw his slider 42% or more of the time. Other pitchers (besides Ross) who have thrown the slider more than 28% over the last few years: Michael Pineda Chris Archer Ervin Santana Jason Hammel Madison Bumgarner Ricky Nolasco Francisco Liriano Collin McHugh Colby Lewis Garret Richards Yovanni Gallardo Kyle Lohse Clayton Kershaw Wily Peralta There's a lot of cautionary tales on that list, but also a lot of talent, but of the top level talent on that list only Bumgarner has yet to show signs of decline or injury, though Kershaw's injury wasn't arm related, but Kershaw and Bumgarner are freaks of nature. Arrieta was 29% and 28.9% in 2014 and 2015 respectively according to Pitch F/X (FanGraphs proprietary pitch type values thinks he was throwing a cutter and not a slider iuf I'm intepreting it correctly). This year he dropped it to 18%. It was his most effective pitch (and the msot valuable pitch in MLB in 2015) so it makes no sense for him to drop it other than to save his arm for the future. If I'm reading the Brooks Baseball charts correctly, Jake has utilized his slider 32.2% of the time in the playoffs, so perhaps he was saving his arm for the postseason where he could unleash his most valuable pitch. North over at CubsRelated did a good post on Jake and his slider back when he had that dominant start a couples starts before the season ended here: http://www.cubsrelated.com/2016/09/jake-arrieta-is-trending-up-not-down.html All I know is there is obvious correlation between slider usage and injury, that much has been known for a while now. I can only guess Jake knows this as well and if he is throwing his slider 32% of the time right now in the playoffs, then maybe that was his plan all along. That and to unleash it next year so he gets a big payday in the offseason. Which in that scenario, I'd be fine letting him walk. And depending on who we acquire this offseason, maybe even trading him if his stock is high before the deadline if it's shown that we wouldn't need him to still win.
8. Yeah. The more I hear and read about it, the more it's becoming a hard pass on being around Wrigleyville during this series. If the experience will be standing around an insane crowd of people, not being able to buy any food or drink, nor having a feed to watch or listen to and just being by the stadium for 4-5 hours standing there, think I'll pass on that.
9. So can we expect that most restaurants and places of interest in the city during the day are going to be flooded as well? There are some restaurants I want to hit up for lunch but I'm wondering if it's gonna be a madhouse everywhere, all day, all weekend long?
10. Not many. I think Yellon is so inept that you could probably select a dozen or so posters off of this board who could do a better job. BCB is a joke. We should start a site where we write articles about the Cubs! Too bad there's not already an established site out there that will let us do it so we have a built in user base :( Wait a minute.... OH SHI
11. The whole, "there were almost no arrests, so nothing really happened!" narrative is pretty hilarious; basically the cops just couldn't even get to most of the horsefeathers going down: http://www.cwbchicago.com/2016/10/cubs-win-hampered-by-crowd-cops-only.html I can't even begin to imagine how boner inducing this world series would be if I were a pickpocket in Chicago.
12. After reading nearly 300,000 people stormed Wrigleyville for the NLCS game, I'm very unoptimistic about getting to a spot in Wrigleyville for any of the games unless I want to get there early afternoon, or even late morning. I would hope they would make a special exception for this. Or the city of Chicago would pony up the dough to make it happen elsewhere in the city. There are way too many parks in the city not to take advantage of that opportunity, especially to disperse the foot traffic across the city in this case. The amphitheater at Millennium Park comes to mind.
13. I thought that too. Why The MLB Tonight guys, Cliff Floyd in particular, debated who comes off the roster and the only three guys they thought were worth mentioning were Soler, Almora, or Heyward, as if because Schwarber plays LF that an outfielder needs to come off the roster, but not the guy who never played, or the reliever they never used. Nevermind the fact that they didn't consider the other LF'er, Coghlan. Here's what happens if they leave LaStella off the roster: Zobrist gets injured -> Soler, Almora, Coghlan, or Contreras fill in at LF Baez gets injured -> Zobrist to 2nd, Soler, Almora, Coghlan, or Contreras to LF Zobrist AND Baez get injured -> Soler, Almora, or Contreras to LF, Coghlan to 2nd (with crossed fingers) Bryant gets injured -> Baez to 3rd, Zobrist to 2nd, Soler, Almora, Coghlan, or Contreras to LF Bryant, Zobrist, AND Baez get injured -> Soler or Almora to LF, Contreras to 3B, Coghlan to 2B (with crossed fingers) In other words, LaStella only serves a good purpose to be on the roster if the Cubs experience catastrophic injuries at an unbelievable rate, and the only time you wish you had him is when you are forced to start Coghlan at 2B which requires extreme circumstances. And this doesn't even account for the even more extreme circumstance of the Cubs doing the unthinkable and putting Schwarber into LF (which they won't do). And even then, they still have Travis Wood for emergency left fielder. In other words, Tommy (NSFW Language):
14. Some useful, some self explanatory intel for us out of towners: http://wgntv.com/2016/10/24/heading-to-wrigleyville-for-the-world-series-here-are-9-things-you-need-to-know/
15. Seriously not having the money to get season tickets a few years ago when our number was called is really starting to chap my ass. I could buy all the filmmaking gear I need and/or want by selling tickets to one game.
16. Is that the face value price or the current rate amongst stub hub sellers?
17. Oh I understand, and I have the utmost respect for not selling, but as a broke ass freelancer for the past several years $20,000 would be a lot of money to ignore for me. But seriously I don't know how much SRO tickets are going for, but if they are substantially less than regular seats, I'd sell and then buy SRO seats and get the best of both worlds. Of course, StubHub is a mess so getting those tickets I imagine is easier said than done. Either way, having to make that choice is probably the best choice in the world right now.
18. What about Cashner as a replacement for Travis Wood?
19. Take me with you. He was rejected. And his anus is bleeding
20. 1) Sell all tickets for $20,000 2) Take $20,000 and buy the cheapest tickets you can find to still go to the game 3) Pocket the difference
