  1. No. I'm to honest and I don't respond well to personal criticism. "What do you plan to do about the crime in our city?" "The same thing that;s being done now" "That's not enough" "It will never be enough, crime will always exist. Putting more money into it would be careless." "You're a horrible candidate! The other candidate says he'll put a stop to crime!" "He's a liar, he can't do anything to stop crime. And you're a stupid douche bag if you believe him" I wouldn't last more than a week in the campaigns
  2. Ewww. Fontenot in CF would be godawful. You don't have to worry about that one. The Cubs aren't trading him and Marshall for Teahen, either. Good. I wouldn't be against a Teahen trade if we didn't give up anything that valuable, but either one of them for Teahen would be ridiculous
  3. It will become more impressive when you narrow your research to third basemen only. That's what I was inferring to, not overall. Regardless, I had no idea so few players had this accomplishment. I only knew of it for third basemen because a lot of the time when people would get whiny about Aramis not hitting well it was always a nice trump card to pull out and say "Go find another third basemen who has had 4 straight years of a .900 OPS or higher"... which was great, because it couldn't be done
  4. Wow. Are the Reds that down on Homer Bailey? Or is this Dusty Baker's doing?
  5. Do you know the tale of how cornmeal came to be? Neither did the miller when he left his house that morning. Oooooohhhhhhh... ugh. Yeah, so this article doesn't have much info on the Peavy trade, at least nothing we don't knowalready, but I figured it would be a good article to post in this thread since it deals with the Padres and their financial troubles. It's currently the front page article on ESPN's MLB page, and it's basically Kevin Towers talking about how crappy their team is now. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/hotstove08/columns/story?columnist=rogers_phil&id=3725229 That's all there is regarding the Peavy to Cubs situation.
  6. Lou Piniella is really starting to be more of a buzzkill than Buzz Killington

  8. Tigers need a shortstop now that Renteria is leaving. Greene is available. Do they have any arms the Padres might be after to help us get Peavy?
  9. I can't wait for this thread to get locked a 2nd time for going off topic
  10. He also makes it sound as if they're going to trade Theriot if they're going ot give him shots at SS. That and the "what we do or don't do" line kind of makes it painfully obvious what they might be seeking out to do
  11. Intriguing gamble, but it has officially opened the MLB market to India now, so despite it being a risk it is probably the first step in making big contributions to the baseball foreign market http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3724303
  12. Just trade him to us so we can start gloating about having the best rotation in baseball (assuming Dempster does well). If we got Peavy, we'd have the best rotation in baseball even if Dempster doesn't do well
  13. Here's the table of contents... I'll just put it up here and if anyone wants to see a specific section, throw up a request and I'll try and scan it when I get some time http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/1032/contents1ql0.th.jpg http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/920/contents2cy8.th.jpg http://img123.imageshack.us/img123/7892/contents3ro8.th.jpg
  14. Gabby Hartnett's account of the Homer in the Gloaming http://img241.imageshack.us/img241/2352/gloaming12yq1.th.jpg http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/9477/gloaming22tt2.th.jpg
  15. So I'm home visiting the parents for Thanksgiving, and my father is now venturing into the world of bookselling, and he has this nifty barcode scanner and all that useless info... Anyways, I'm messing with the scanner downstairs with a bunch of his old books and I find this gem in the shelf called "The Baseball Reader: Favorites from The Fireside Books of Baseball" It's a quirky fact and info book all about baseball that was first published in 1980 I believe (this one was redone in 1989 I think. Regardless of all that there's some awesome sections in here that are really really intriguing and interesting. It's a compilation of stuff written by all sorts of folks. There's a section in here called "How I Throw The Slider" written by Bob Feller. There's a part by Gabby Hartnett talking about the homer in the gloaming, Carl Hubbell talking about his experience in the 1934 all-star game, a report by Vin Scully about Koufax's no hitter vs. the Cubs, as well as a bunch of fictional stories by various writers. Lots of really great stuff. I'll try and scan a lot of the pages and stories tonight and I'll work on getting them up here.
  16. of consecutive .900 OPS seasons ended this year. 2 points shy at .898 I always liked using that stat to argue against people who don't like Aramis. Oh well. Still a remarkable feat, all things considered.
  17. I would laugh if this turns into a full scale fued that started because of the Cubs. Rappers can fued over whatever personal things they fued over... Rockers will fued over the Cubs
  18. I'll take him in the later rounds and DL that mother. Besides, according to Tim Kurkjan, he's made of fire, brimstone, titanium alloy, sex appeal, and cheese flavored grits. He'll be back in 2 weeks
  19. I'm 0-0 with 2 walks and an OBP of 1.000
  20. Man, he's got a schnoz made for Vaudeville.
  21. I'd grab & rehab Hampton for the league minimum. Little risk, possible reward. What possible reward though? Are people hoping he'll become the 1999 Mike Hampton, 10 years ago? He's gonna be 36 next year, and he hasn't had an above average year since 2003, and that year wasn't anything terribly special. His WHIP is horrendous, his ERA capability is 5th starter/long reliever at best, and he hasn't played a full season since 2004, which was cut short due to injury. Why on earth would anyone want this guy? Career 4.01 ERA and 1.43 WHIP and chronic injury problems? 4.85ERA in his comeback 1/2 a year? Yeah. Let's get that. Let's get a a frail version of Jason Marquis. I want that on my favorite team. No I don't. If we're gonna toss league minimum money at a reclamation project who hasn't pitched hardly at all in 3 years and is injury prone, I'd rather throw it at Mark Prior. At least we know that if we get a good return on him it will actually be worthy of at least a middle rotation spot, that and he'll be 10 years younger than Hampton. Hampton is a joke. I'd rather take a flyer on Hidalgo. Blech to Mike Hampton
  22. Factoring modern day competition, Pujols is better. oh now you've done it Is this the part where we call Ty Cobb a racist? Ty Cobb is a sensationalist hack
  23. That's bonkers. It'd be awesome if there was pint size slugger in the MLB today
  24. Don't make me come back here and talk about 56 at-bats again
  25. How in the F did he generate enough power to hit 56HR? Short walls back in the day? That picture should inspire short ballplayers everywhere. Also, who won the MVP in 1930? How could he have not gotten any consideration? .356/.454/.723 56HR 191RBI (still a MLB record) And no votes for MVP? WTF?
