  1. You mean World Series MVP David Eckstein!?!?!?!?
  2. Sounds better than some of the other crap we've been linked to
  3. Please yes. If we're not getting Dunn, and we only get a one-year stop gap so the Cubs can go after someone like Fielder or Gonzalez, Pena is the best option in terms of short term signability and upside. He plays great defense, will draw 80+ walks, and will be a legit power bat in the middle of the lineup. His BABIP last year was .222 which was 57 points below his career norm, he won't hit under .200 again, especially not if he transfers to the elite pitching smorgasbord that is the NL Central.
  4. I'm not sure about his corner outfield defense, but IIRC Ellsbury's defense in center was laughable
  5. I hope they do sign Webb. He'll likely be affordable, and provides a substantial amount of upside over the other crap we've been rumored to look at. I'd rather go into the season using someone like Jay Jackson or Andrew Cashner as a starter over someone like Vincente Padilla or whatever other marginally average pitcher we're targeting. If you're going to waste your time and money on pitchers who can't help the team win, you might as well save your money and work on developing the young arms. In the meantime, you could invest in Brandon Webb and hope he regains his Cy Young form. If he doesn't, you end up spending about the same as it would cost for someone like Kevin Millwood and you end up spending the postseason on the couch either way
  6. If a lefty is picking up a grounder moving towards 2nd base and he needs to turn two, wouldn't that throw be akin to a right handed fielder moving towards 1st base an having to turn two? I don't think it matters. If you've made it to the major league level as a first baseman chances are you've had plenty of time to adapt to those concerns for it to be a non issue
  7. Appears Joey Votto has an understanding of the metrics...
  8. Tonight on MLB Network, Mitch Williams called him Jesse James and asked him if he brought a gun into the negotiations, and then congratulated him and said it would buy a lot of rally thongs. Mitch Williams is a real piece of [expletive] analyst
  9. Lance Berkman will not sign a 1-year "prove your worth" type deal. His down year he posted a 114 OPS+ and the year before he posted an OPS+ of 140. He's probably hoping for 4 years, is willing to accept 3, and will settle for no less than 2. Only way he does a 1-year deal is if he gets a player option for the 2nd year. I don't have faith in his ability to turn it around and put up another 140 OPS+ type of year again, but he's still an OBP machine. Someone will give him multiple years, and I pray that it isn't the Cubs. If we're looking for a 1-year stopgap that could provide high upside on a 1-year bounce-back deal, Carlos Pena is the guy we need. He should be able to get multiple years, too, but the fact that he was a smidge over league average this year at the plate while hitting under the Mendoza line would probably lend his services towards a 1-year deal moreso than Berkman. That being said I still want Dunn
  10. Yeah, if someone would get Harang fixed he can eat a bunch of innings... he was as good as Z at one point. And, like Z, he's also been Dusty'd. Yeah, cause Z's arm really deteriorated after Dusty left
  11. Andy LaRoche was supposed to be good.... but he isn't
  12. The stat guy/Sportscenter update dude on Mike and Mike in the Morning was ranting about this weeks ago. I'm sure he's fuming I forget who, but someone on mlb network was also doing this too. Sounds like Mitch Williams
  13. +1 Davis has some upside and would be an excellent buy low candidate, especially if it only costs the Cubs someone like Castillo or Chirinos. However, if the Cubs are going into 2011 expecting Davis to live up to his numbers in the minors as the starting 1B, we're going to be in for a rough year. If we were going to go the failed prospect route, Id prefer to go after Alex Gordon. However, if we could get Chris Davis for Castillo or Chirinos, Id be all about it, and Id certainly prefer him over someone like Overbay, especially if Dunn is off the table. I'd prefer Gordon as well, but I have a feeling the Royals still aren't giving up on him just yet, and as a result would demand more than one of our expendable catchers
  14. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=5821797
  15. How much can we expect Marmol to make in arbitration this year? Would signing him to an extension save us money or would we wind up spending more? Doesn't seem wise to spend what little money you have for new players on players you already have control over
  16. I would say he would be back with Rudy Jaramillo working on his swing, but Rudy was there in 08 when he was striking out and a record pace. That being said, I don't mind targeting him if all we're giving up is a backup catcher and as long as Hendry realizes that Davis should be a fallback plan/bench option and he still targets a legit first baseman
  17. Bud Black was handed Adrian Gonzalez and a bunch of other guys and he turned it into a contender. Same reason Girardi won it with the Marlins a few years back. If you're given a plate of [expletive] and you make it taste like a filet... you win
  18. If you don't count Nady and Colvin, or just about anybody who is capable of putting a glove on their hand and is taller than 5'8". Touché, but isn't Nady a FA?
  19. I know he's a terrible option as a starting 1B, and we're obviously targeting a first baseman this offseason, but wasn't he our only true 1B option in the entire system that's capable of playing at the MLB level?
  20. I wouldn't consider trading Soto in this situation, but I would imagine if the Cubs did trade Soto they would retain Koyie Hill instead of possibly non-tendering him this offseason, which means we'd be facing the decision of... Koyie Hill + Justin Upton vs. Geovany Soto + Tyler Colvin Or if they let Hill go it'd be Castillo + Upton. Just doesn't seem right. If you try and trade for Upton, you do so without including Soto or Castro at all costs. And in that situation the Cubs probably fall short of what it takes to get him. Or if you do trade Soto in a package deal, you request they send Miguel Montero with Upton so you have some semblance of an offensive threat behind the plate
