It's refreshing because it means we have a bunch of shitty contracts coming off the books and, unlike the rest of those teams, we have an assload of money to spend on GOOD long term contracts before then. It doesn't take into account Castro, Rizzo, Jackson, et al., it means we're not gonna be hampered by ridiculous contracts that were given out last decade anymore (finally), and we can spend the money wisely and where it counts because our front office isn't stupid. By 2015 I fully expect to have several key players still under team control, with several others locked up to contracts. We've got a farm system that keeps getting better and terrible salaries coming off the books giving the Cubs a clean slate to go bonkers bat [expletive] crazy in the FA market if they wanted to whenever a marquee name becomes available. THAT is refreshing.

I never thought I'd ever ask this question, but considering their recent salary dumping efforts and attempts to not go over the luxury tax limit... do the Yankees have enough money in their budget to afford Soler?

I might be wrong here and I haven't really looked it up.. but I think it is spelled Solar If it is Solar, then all of the baseball people, and news people for that matter, are spelling it wrong. I just did a search for Jorge Solar and got nothing baseball related. Got a ton when I spelled it Soler. WHOOSH!

First off, he's a pitcher and nearly 30. Not to be nitpicky, but Cain is only 27, and doesn't turn 28 until after the 2012 season is over. He's still really young, he's just been in the league since 2005 when he was 20 years old so it seems like he's an older pitcher. I agree with all your points though in that entire post

I forgot, they also traded for Colin Cowgill and are going to sign Manny Ramirez. All of this while already having Michael Taylor, Chris Carter, Daric Barton, and Kila K'ahasldauslhdg in their organization, and having virtually no chance at competing this season. You're forgetting Jarrod Parker, Ryan Cook, Derek Norris, A.J. Cole, Tom Millone, and Brad Peacock (the other guys who they got for Gio Gonzalez and Trevor Cahill, and most of whom are actually pretty nice players)

I'm getting more and more confident that the Cubs can pull this off. Like someone said the Marlins talked a big game on Pujols and lowballed him, and they're doing the same here. Should've seen that coming, I was actually concerned they were going to make a ridiculous offer that wasn't worth topping.

That should not be difficult to top whatsoever. Obviously they're making the first move, but I kind of expected their offer to be much more aggressive than that considering the things they've said publicly in the past about him. Also this update from MLBTR:
