  1. Would've put this in the Bryce Harper thread but it was locked... http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/8047918/washington-nationals-bryce-harper-clown-question-retort-takes-off
  2. Out of curiosity I noticed the Cubs TV deal expires in 2014 with WGN. Is that before or after the 2014 season? Aren't the Cubs aiming for their own Network ala Red Sox, Yankees, Angels, etc.?
  3. =D> Well played
  4. They will lose that argument to the lineup every time. Yeah the offense ranks in the bottome third of almost every category and has the 5th lowest OPS in the league. They are the #1 culprit for the hellish season we've had so far. Touche... I just know that LaHair, Castro, Barney, Soriano, and DeJesuis have all been performing admirably so it slipped my mind just how bad the others have been. I just knew that the bullpen has blown a whole lot of leads as well. Double whammy, I suppose. And not the good kind.
  5. I don't think those two statements really conflict, though. I don't either, I just think it's funny that it was "the easiest part" and the bullpen has been arguably the biggest reason for the tremendous failure this season. I also can't really remember the last time we had a lot of power arms since the days of Wood/Prior/etc. I'm excited about this approach.
  6. I find the bullpen situation slightly humorous because in Spring Training didn't Hoyer say something to the effect of "The bullpen is the easiest part of the team to put together"? Now we're looking for power arms everywhere we can. Not upset with that strategy, but I find it a little funny given his preseason quote.
  7. Hit Tracker hasn't updated yet, I'm very curious to see the true distance on that home run
  8. Didn't they already give 2014 to someone else? I thought I remember hearing that somewhere because of the Cubs' desire to get that year it popped up around here when it happened? EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2014_Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game Twins are TRYING to get it. I thought they had gotten it, but it's apparently still not a done deal, so maybe this rumor has some depth to it
  9. IIRC the rumors that were being reported said the Tigers did not want to include Turner in any deal, and supposedly Porcello was who the Tigers were trying to include instead, was it not? Either way, it never happened, and the rumors were just that, rumors, so it's completely irrelevant at this point to talk about a trade that never happened 4-5 months ago
  10. Koyie Hill will be giving up his 40 man spot very soon I would think. If only we could be so lucky, but Brett notes that they might just bounce Blake Lalli... and that oddly seems accurate, unfortunately.
  11. How so? He looks like he's doing just fine to me, if not a little better in some aspects of his game What aspects of Garza's game have been better this year? He's taken a step back from last year, but 2011 was a pretty glaring outlier. He's still performing very well though. Compared to last year? Obviously there's a difference in sample size, but his WHIP is lower, his H/9 is lower, his walk rate has remained the same, and his K/rate has gone down a bit to 8.4 (from 9.0). His HR rate is up to 1.2, which is on par with his career norms before last year. H'es shown a little bit of the pitcher we got last year and the pitcher we gave up a lot of prospects for the year before. On top of that, his bad numbers inflated from three bad starts. Every pitcher has bad outings so that's no excuse, but every other start he's had besides the three (where he gave up 7, 5, and 6 ER) he surrendered 2 or fewer runs. He's been pretty damn good in every start outside of those three. I don't know, I just don't see the concern. Those bad starts aren't 100% avoidable. Pitchers have bad outings, they're not perfect. And Garza has been a a great pitcher otherwise. I don't think his value has dropped much, if at all, because of those rough starts, nor do I think he's regressed considerably.
  12. How so? He looks like he's doing just fine to me, if not a little better in some aspects of his game
  13. It's Jim Bowden, so take it with a boulder of salt, but...
  14. Didn't a bunch of teams, Cubs included, just watch him in Florida last week? Ironically, that actually WAS Wesley Snipes.
  15. I agree with this and didn't mean my statement to come off as "I hope they all suck". Like others said, the players we want to continue to develop are developing just fine and the team is still on a piss poor pace to be one of the worst teams in baseball. If they're gonna stink, and they're gonna stink on a pace to be MLB's worst, then why waste time being upset that they're not gonna win 5-10 more games and still have a shitty record and instead accept the fact that they stink, and appreciate that the silver lining is they have the opportunity to not just take the best player in the draft, but the right one also?
  16. They should probably pick up Derrek Lee for the playoff push
  17. This. Whether they lose 100 games or 99, they still lose and come in last place more than likely. With a bigger talent pool in the draft next year, I'm quite alright with a 100 loss team. Actually, I kind of hope it happens just to make sure we get the best possible player available. They aren't going to the playoffs one way or the other, so at this point the more games they lose the better it will be for the future development of the team, as far as I'm concerned.
  18. I want to get a dog and call him Rizzo, but I'm pretty sure all my friends will think I'm naming him after this. Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk 2
  19. Dave Schoenfeld offers his thoughts, thinks the best fit is Detroit and the Cubs could aim for Turner, but settle on Crosby or Porcello... http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/id/25504/crystal-ball-dempster-lands-in-detroit Also offers 6 other possible destinations, all of which are baseless hypotheticals. EDIT: The ridiculousness of this article is absurd... Later... So Dempster won't return anything huge, but they could aim for a Top 25 prospect Detroit reportedly balked at including in a Garza deal who is held in higher regard than Wheeler? Well done, Schoenfeld. He also floats Dempster for Jose Igleseas.

  21. Right...we should only go after players that have a 100% success rate like.....FAs? 2016 Cubs: Free Agent, CF Free Agent, RF Castro, SS Free Agent, LF Free Agent, 1B Free Agent, 2B Free Agent, C Garza, SP Samardzija, SP Free Agent, SP Free Agent, SP Free Agent, SP Yay that was fun. That's a sexy lineup
  22. Step away for a couple hours and THIS happens?!?!? [expletive] yeah.
  23. I assume you are talking about soriano. you pay the cash to increase the talent that comes back in return. olney makes it sound like we wouldn't get much even if we paid. that's incredibly dumb. I agree, but that has pretty much been the general consensus for much longer than this year though, has it not? That we'd have to eat 90%+ just to get rid of him in any deal has been pretty common knowledge. But I completely agree that if we make it to where a team is paying way less than he's actually worth we should get at least one solid prospect in return.
