  1. Come to think if it, didn't he used to be decent at breaking news prior to joining MLB Network? Or did he always make broad assessments of rumors?
  2. He also never reports anything as definite until it's confirmed by another source. Nearly all of his updates are blanket statements that cover his ass if he ends up being wrong, to the effect of "Dempster to the Dodgers is a done deal, if the teams come to terms". He's the John Madden of baseball journalism
  3. If you're the Brewers, would you have preferred to ship Greinke to the Braves to try and get a better package than what we were going to get for Dempster, or is the package they got from the Angels better than what they would've likely got from the Braves? If we were able to swing a Dempster for Delgado deal, I imagine Greinke would've brought in much more than that
  4. Well, since he won't be playing in Los Angeles, I suspect he'll be fine. Touché.
  5. What is the appeal of Segura? Looking at his numbers and is correlating prospect rankings I assume he is primarily known for his speed and his defense?
  6. He's probably going to retire in a couple weeks because he can't handle the pressure of playing in Los Angeles.
  7. Marlins asking for a kings ransom for Josh Johnson... Good luck, Miami.
  8. I wonder if they'd be interested in one of the best defensive outfielders in the game, who's having a damn good year with the bat. http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/8/88459/1643120-tommyleejones_super.jpg

  10. He's hardly the first person to bring that up. If it took Phil Rogers this long to figure that out he's a doofus. (No surprise there)
  11. So I've been skipping over all this police officer/Carl Crawford stuff, but I read the latest and saw this... That's the defense the cop's lawyer is using in an effort to get the guy's job back after being fired for calling Crawford the N-word. That's a real airtight defense.
  12. Also, going by this standard, Fred Lynn doesn't belong on the list, because he played 15 games in '74
  13. I know just by eyeballing it this is true and glaringly obvious, but if we're going by WAR and OPS+, Fred Lynn and Williams are fairly equal Lynn - 162 OPS+, 7.1 bWAR, 7.3 fWAR Williams - 160 OPS+, 6.6 bWAR, 7.9 fWAR
  14. Before Pujols, I do believe Mike Piazza held the distinction of one of the greatest rookie seasons of all time, as well. playing catcher certainly helped that distinction 602 PA - .318/.370/.561/.932 152 OPS+, 35 HR, 112 RBI, 81 R, 24 2B, 6.8 bWAR, 7.6 fWAR McGuire also managed a 164 OPS+ his rookie year, but only compiled a 5.4 fWAR and a 4.8 bWAR
  15. Jesus Christ, either stop using paragraphs or double space them out. Are you typing on an Apple II?
  16. I think Trout is on pace to have the greatest rookie season ever. Maybe even one of the best MVP seasons ever (in the non-Bonds category) if he keeps it up. but when talking about greatest rookie seasons of all time, I know Lynn's OPS+ outranks Pujols' but Pujols' rookie year was pretty amazing... 676 PA - .329/.403/.610/1.013 157 OPS+, 37HR, 130 RBI, 112R, 47 2B, 6.3 bWAR, 7.7 fWAR
  17. They just brought up Starling Marte, they don't really need someone like Soriano just yet. If they go after him it'd be on waivers after Marte proves whether or not he can handle MLB pitching this year, and even then I doubt they'd target him
  18. My [expletive] brother just called me to ask how possible/awesome it would be for the Cubs to get Josh Johnson in exchange for Ryan Dempster. I cursed at him a lot and hung up.
  19. Contract or control? Fair enough, he's under control. They can still trade him this offseason, next trade deadline or even extend and keep him. The amount of concern over Garza possibly not being traded seems misplaced. I think the concern is they end this trading deadline with no new longterm assets brought into the team when the only thing we've been able to look forward to in this god awful season has been the seemingly inevitable acquisition of top prospects. Garza was always the guy who could get them the most while Dempster was the guy who had to go. Just when it looked like they could get more than expected for Dempster, clearing the way for a bigger market for Garza, it all went to hell. It's just just about Garza not being traded, but rather nobody of value being acquired - potentially. I think this is a perfectly justifiable concern, I'm just of the opinion that it's not as big of a deal as you're making it out to be, is all.
  20. It's a tricep cramp. Has no one ever experience a tricep cramp before? It goes away after a couple days, if that. Also "Hasn't pitched since his injury"? He pitched on July 21st when the injury happened. His next turn in the rotation would be tomorrow, with or without the injury, but he happens to be having a kid at the time so he can't make that. Not an injury, but a child, and he's slated to pitch when he comes back, a couple days off from his routinely scheduled appearance. You guys are chicken little-ing the [expletive] out of this.
  21. Yeah, he can be traded. But you'd be an idiot to offer up top notch prospects for him while he's injured in the middle of a down year. If the Cubs can't get top prospects for him they shouldn't trade him. It's not about whether or not they can move him, it's whether or not they can get top value in return. Short of top value there is no reason to move him. I understand that, but a month ago we were talking about trading him for guys like Castellanos and Turner, or Lee and Eovaldi, and other clubs top prospects, etc. The only thing that has changed since then is he was removed for a tricep cramp, his performance remained consistent with the rest of the year, and now he's untradeable for guys like that? I find that hard to believe.
  22. billy would have beat those [expletive] to death with the [expletive] face bat like the bear jew But would he cry out his own name or Cal's after he smashes him in the face?
  23. well I don't remember exactly, some sort of premenstrual thing in his arm A tricep cramp is probably nothing, and even Garza said it was weird but he'd be okay, and all the x-rays came back negative. You're acting like if he doesn't make ONE good start then no one will want to trade for one and a half years of his services. I think that's a little over the top. Teams can still trade for him based on his credentials and his performance history, and if there's an issue with his health, that's what physicals are for. I just don't see how there is a 0% chance we could trade Garza UNLESS he makes his next start and is healthy. If he were a half season rental I could see the concern, but teams would get him for one more year and are able to obtain a draft pick as compensation if they let him leave. I don't see how that doesn't still have value to teams. I'd hate for my GM to be such a risk taker that he trade top notch prospects for Matt Garza right now. And if the physical shows he's not healthy it gets voided. He currently has a non-injury, I think you're overreacting a bit. Trading Garza is still a very real possibility. Maybe not to the Braves, but he can still be moved. The extra year of control still holds value.
  24. Pffft. That's just reasonable fan concern. Nothing wrong with that! Who said the death threats came from Cubs fans? I know some Braves fans who are pissed that Dempster turned them down. I was under the impression it was from Atlanta fans. Why would he be turned off on going to Atlanta if Cubs fans were sending him death threats? "I got some really nasty death threats from some people in Chicago, so I'm going to stay here"? It had to have been from Atlanta fans. I don't think the garden variety meathead Chicago fan who would send a death thread would want to trade Dempster for Delgado, and I know a lot of Atlanta fans who didn't like Delgado
