  1. They both did last year. Meph made a rational argument why there's still hope for Fukudome to turn it around, but his post was also laced with emotional lanuage because personal bickering seems to have replaced rational argumentation far too often on this board. The updated member guidelines intend to fix this problem - may I suggest everyone reads them and posts accordingly. Threads like this one can only gain in quality by doing so.
  2. :banghead: Can someone just deny to Lou he's even on the team?
  3. We can blame Dusty for this one too. Andy Pratt was quite a haul too.
  4. I doubt the Cubs will risk Guzman's health by letting him try his hand at starting in 2009. They'll probably be quite happy if he can stay healthy and contribute from the pen this season. But if things go well and if he is still interested, they may be tempted to let him follow the Depmster route back to starting at some point in the future (providing there will be a window of opportunity for a rotation spot)
  5. - Baseball America Transactions I think he's more than roster filler/spring training help. I think he has a good chance of playing for Peoria or Daytona. That guy sounds like a gamble worth taking - a useful catcher is welcome in just about any organization, I guess. But let's not get our hopes up.
  6. I made Mexican fans who had the temerity to sit in the US supporter sections leave. It was an unbelievably awesome game experience. The US fans were loud and great... singing all the time and mocking where appropriate. I don't know if you guys saw on tv, but after the game, the entire team came over to the supporter area. They were riling us up, thanking us and they threw their shirts into the stands... awesome. Glad to read this - it's what attending a home game should be like. :D
  7. Solid job by Bruce summing up what to look out for in ST. Thanks.
  8. It worked. He'll pitch for the Netherlands in the WBC.
  9. ... to the exit door. Banning as a nice addition to grounding. :D
  10. The US men's U-20 team is preparing for the Concacaf Championship in March. I was intrigued to read that four of those youngsters were playing professionally in Europe: Bryan Arguez (Hertha Berlin), Kyle Davies (Southampton FC), Jared Jeffrey (Club Brugge, obviously the guy I was interested in) and Guiseppe Nazzani (Bologna FC). All of those sound like good places to start your pro career as a youngster.

  12. If you disregard the Dusty factor, these seem like two no-risk signings for the Reds. I think quite a lot of teams will have a couple of MLB vets as NRI's in spring training; it seems to be part of everyone's annual "you never know..." routine.
  13. How do you know this is the case? Or is it educated guesswork on the basis of media reports, which may or may not be reliable?
  14. True, and I'm sure that's part of it. But there have been offseasons before and it's never gotten this bad. Perhaps, but consecutive division titles mean some fans are now acting like spoiled brats, especially when discussing the relative merits (or lack thereof) of the moves Hendry has made in the offseason.
  15. The Cubs would have to feel confident that Hill would be able to be consistent for the entire season for that to work - positive signs in ST wouldn't be enough. I guess if anything trading him indicated they had lost all confidence in his ability to remain consistent over an entire season.
  16. Is there any other way to survive for Cubs fans?
  17. Everybody here seems to be 100% sure that Bradley will get injured at some point during the season. Call me naive, but I have a feeling he'll stay healthy.
  18. I thought that was obvious even before last season. It'll be interesting to see where he starts the season, and how well he does.
  19. That's probably what awaits Dwayne Kemp - he hasn't played for the Dutch international squad before (only on the junior level); I'd be surprised if he makes it now. Well he did show up for the start of preparations of the Dutch team this week: http://www.honkbalsite.com/nieuws/2009/training_nederland2401.html (scroll down - bottom right hand pic is Kemp). In related news, the Dutch announced that Sidney Ponson would play for them in the WBC.
  20. BBB' reasoning makes sense to me, but as far as the Peavy trade is concerned: I'll believe it when it happens.

  22. A BA over .300 and 5 dingers. 8-)
  23. I like Gattuso as a player, but I agree with you on this.
  24. Good work there, Bruce. Not sure what Hendry is expecting in return for Pie in a trade, but it can't be much. Somehow, I fear he'll be exposed and someone will pick him up for free.
  25. Huh? Did he have a contract clause guaranteeing lifelong ST invitations or something?
