  1. Thanks, Raisin. Nice digging. 8-)
  2. Odd, I only count six so far: Blyleven (duh!), Remmerswaal (Red Sox), Eenhoorn (Yankees), Faneyte (Giants), Milliard (Marlins), van den Hurk (Marlins)
  3. There's no such thing as a "foreign player slot" in the Belgian league (a team can field 11 foreigners if they like; a couple of seasons ago, some team actually did). I should think it could facilitate a move to a bigger European club - as a national of an EU country, he has "freedom of movement" within the EU and he cannot be refused a work permit to play in say Italy or the UK. 8-) If so, smart move on his part.
  4. Oguchi Onyewu officially obtained the Belgian nationality last friday and is currently training again with Standard Liège. Obviously, as he's played for the U.S., he cannot be selected for any national squad here; I'm not sure what it means for his status as a U.S. international though.
  5. I would like to voice my support for this idea. Random speculation (as much fun as it may be on an internet forum) won't do him any good.
  6. Getting shammier every day. 8-)
  7. Missed this move earlier in the week. A bit puzzling since he didn't really play regularly at Mesa - and from what I've read he may need to work on his defense. Still, good to see the young Dutchman moving up.
  8. What did Von Joshua do to get ejected?
  9. MiLB's unintentionally funny at times. From Mesa's box score:
  10. 18 yr old Thomas De Wolf became the first Belgian national to sign a pro contract by signing with the Mets organization yesterday. He plays outfield for the Hoboken Pioneers (that's Hoboken near Antwerp, FYI), and with the national youth squad. No bonus figure was mentioned, but I heard him on the local radio on the way to work this morning, and he sounds like a level-headed kid. Fun trivia fact: he lives in Wilrijk (another Antwerp suburb), which is also Laurens' birthplace. 8-)
  11. Local sources have Fulham and ... FC Köln as possible options for him. His contract with Standard Liège runs through the next season though, so there will be a fee...
  12. MiLB corrected Hill's line to 3 ER (probably a mercy call to get his ERA below 100)
  13. Holy smoke. The AZL Cubs won 18-1 against the AZL Royals today. box Some dude named Pie played CF and had 5 RBI's; maybe we should keep an eye on that one. Nice to see Dwayne Kemp get his first professional hits today.
  14. Well deserved win by Spain. And worthy European Champions they are.
  15. Sure seems like it. If that was his only "bad spell" of the season, the Cubs are set. 8-)
  16. They are in the same group as Belgium, so they should have no trouble in qualifying
  17. Dude, it ain't about numbers, just like ... (insert obscure fishing reference).
  18. If you could pick a "grudge" matchup in Europe, that would be the one. Orange madness will reach unprecedented heights if that were to happen. To me, a possible The Netherlands vs Spain semi would be the match of the tournament 8-)
  19. I did. Now I have a quiet evening at least. Opinions were divided among my Dutch colleagues: some preferred Sweden, some Russia. Personally, I don't think it matters; Spain and The Netherlands seem to be head and shoulders above the rest...
  20. IIRC you stille have an exam tomorrow - get back to studying.
  21. Tell me about it. I'm in a hotel in Breda giving a seminar for a bunch of Dutch colleagues; as soccer madness has struck here, I'll be forced to cut the evening session short because of the soccer games on TV (they want to find out who will play them in the quarter finals).
  22. There was never any mention of visa restrictions on Dutch sites, so I assume that could just have been a rumour. To my knowledge, young Dutch players turning pro (and there have been several in the last few years) have never had any visa problems.
  23. In Italy? Unlikely. 8-)
  24. Any bets as to who will be the first signing?
