  1. Mirallas to Everton confirmed - that makes another Belgian international on an EPL payroll, :D
  2. Not to mention the fact that two preliminary CL rounds were played during the Olympics, as well as pre-season preparations for almost every soccer league in Europe, To avoid a real disaster (like Barcelona winning a court case in 2008 for the right to withhold Messi from the Beijng tournament - he was allowed to play anyway) Fifa had to rule in March 2012 that teams would be obligated to release players for the Olympics, prompting the FA to assure clubs that players that played at Euro 2012 would not be selected for the Olympics. That made the pecking order in international soccer quite clear.
  3. Official news today: Lukaku to West Bromwich Albion for a season-long loan spell. Well at least he'll get playing time.
  4. Two dudes with oversized egos having a pissing match in the media; no big deal. Both want to remembered as "the best ever" (imho, that would be Owens, btw) and see the other as the main competitor.
  5. I guess they read NSBB - all three of them.
  6. I can see ManU doing this in a friendly.
  7. MLB's annual European Academy got underway last Wednesday in Italy; on average, about seven players a year (starting in 2005) get signed by MLB organizations, the Mariners' Alex Liddi being the first to make it to the majors. A kid who can't be signed for a while, but may be worth keeping an eye on, is 14yr old Dutch RHP pitcher Matz Schutte, fresh off winning pitching honors at the European U16 championship (former Cubs farmhand Ferenc Jongejan was the pitching coach on that team). He is by far the youngest player attending.
  8. Getting back to the fascinating sport of dressage: Hiroshi Hoketsu ended 40th today, at the age of 70 8-) Which is the same result he got at the Tokio Olympics in 1964 in the showjumping event.
  9. I don't think they'll be very patient with him; he'll probably spend 2013 in the Italian league.
  10. Kudos to whoever pulled that stunt.
  11.  I guess some people are too busy with important things to simply enjoy sports. Their theory that "atheist nations will underperform" is air tight. Just look at which country leads the medal count. OOOHHHHHH........ Their entry on the US women's soccer team is comical. The coach is lambasted in a footnote, but no mention of Megan Rapinoe. :-k
  12. Here's the official spin : Clint Dempsey left out of Fulham's Swiss training camp :pig:

  14. Iowa Cubs site has De La Cruz as the starter on their front page. probably because Coleman is starting in Chicago tonight That's what we're all hoping for.

  16. That's because the financial stakes (for FIFA) are much smaller in women's soccer.
  17. The men play their under 23 team in the Olympics, I think a few spots are open to older players who are on their way out of international soccer. There's speculation that this will be the direction the US goes in basketball after this Olympic team. The rules are: any U-23 player selected must be released by their club - a maximum of three players may be over 23, but their clubs are under no obligation to release them. Why do they have these rules for soccer? FIFA doesn't like competition for their World Cup; this is the agreement they and the IOC came up with to make the Olympic tournament more relevant and at the same time no threat to said WC.

  19. I think "God save the Queen" would have been the courageous choice as the Sex Pistols track. 8-)
  20. Why the [expletive] are the stadium announcements first in French and then followed by English?
  21. Having an 86 yr old woman jump out of a helicopter in to a stadium full of wires stretched between the stands from one side to the other not credible enough for you?
  22. Way to early for that. WTF LaHair???
  23. It's weird that they keep warning people off of their two best attacking players, all while being linked with transfer interest in other team's attacking players. Lukaku to Fulham on a loan deal for the 2012-2013 season, according to The Sun. That'd be a strange move for Chelsea. I think he's ready now. I was surprised to see this too. If anything, he should have been loaned last season, not this one. The imminent arrival at Chelsea of Brasil's Oscar (rumor has it he'll sign on Friday) may have a lot to do with it. Lukaku needs to play competitive games; Fulham (pairing him with fellow international Dembele) seems like a good fit.
