  1. Cuban bought the Mavericks when they were the laughing stock of the NBA (pushing 70 losses if I remember correctly) and turned them into a perennial contender. He's by no means perfect, however. His most egregious decision, of course, was when he let Steve Nash go in order to spend the full boat on Eric Dampier. Still, there are few sports franchise owners with as much passion for winning as Cuban.

The exception that proves the rule? just sayin... It's already a good defensive team, so Wallace wouldn't need to shoulder the load. On the other hand, what the Bulls need is a big man who can score, and that's not wallace
  3. no, but setting record attendance #'s with a 70 win team isn't incentive to go out of their way to win either. Until the ticket money drys up, we get token effort I don't think they're naive enough to think that near-capacity attendance will continue. And, in fact, it hasn't this season. They're only averaging 95.4% of capacity so far. They've only been over 3 million for two seasons and will be again this year only because of the increased capacity. They didn't even break 2.7 in 2002. There isn't much of a reason to believe that attendance won't suffer if this keeps up. If that happens, the Cubs will be losing a significant amount of potential revenue. i hope they do

  5. wouldn't typing "tomorrow" have been easier? /joke thief
  6. I don't understand all the infatuation with Dubois. What was so great about him? Maybe it's my frustration, but with all of our failures, I'm not sure that our farm system is very good. But I've also lost all my confidence in MacPhail/Hendry, etc,... he had a pretty remarkable year production/power-wise in 2004 (AAA) and was consistent enough through his minor league career that people thought he could successfully transition to the majors
  7. There just seem to be a group of people who seem to resent sabermetrics, Moneyball, whatever you want to call it, and will go to lengths to somehow defy its logic or prove it wrong. Joe Morgan is the spokesman for this movement
  8. Read my stuff over the past few weeks. I constantly mention it and ask about it. How do you know nobody has asked about it? I ask about it every day and write about it more than anybody. This is an organization that clearly thumbs their noses at stats. fixed /woah, did I just "fix" Bruce? //runs Uh, I didn't write "thumbs their noses at stats." They don't. They just seem to value the wrong ones. i know, sorry. It's a thing we do here, editing each others posts. Didn't intend to misrepresent you. When I realized whose post I had edited I immediately went to fix but it was too late. It won't happen again.

playoffs, shmlayoffs. I'll take the risk on a multiple Defensive Player of the Year. Risk, shmisk, right? I'm sure he'll be every bit as dominant at 35, 36, 37 - just like Antonio Davis. how old was Rodman from 96-98?
  10. I'm curious who the cardinals are predicted to be taking in the mock drafts (as the Spikes roster will be almost entirely June draftees)

  14. Someone asked me to make this for them for their sig, but it turned out pretty well so I thought I'd post it. I don't know if it's funny or sad. http://www.simleaguebaseball.com/derwood/suckometer.jpg
  15. especially considering that firing Baker will in no way improve the team's performance on the field. It will get people to put the torches and pitchforks down, however.
  16. I'm pretty sure Steinbrenner has a blank check already signed for him
  17. They have to show SOMETHING between Barry Bonds at-bats and Duke Basketball!
  18. that DP was so predictable I could just puke
  19. The irony is that he lost Nomar by pursuing Furcal, but LA ended up with both.
  20. What a joy it would be to see Rothschild, Sarge, Clines and Baker get fired. He'll fire Dick Pole
  21. Thanks for the reminder -- I forgot to put Jeff Weaver on my list. he of the Rusch-esque 1-7, 7.30 ERA, 1.64 WHIP? What about him?
  22. So my friend is over (also a Cubs fan) and before we go out to eat we check the score online. 4-3 Cubs. I say "They'll lose by the time we get home". We come home, check ESPNews, Cubs lose 5-4. I start laughing. He is pissed. Apparently I've already conceded the season while my poor friend holds out hope.
  23. I recently witnessed a Clines hitting session. It went something like this: CLINES: Okay Matt, we need you to be agressive out there. I know you like taking pitches, but that only gets the pitcher's confidence up. So let's try this again. MURTON: CLINES: C'mon now! Why didn't you swing at that? MURTON: It was 2 feet out of the zone CLINES: Zone, Shmone. If you can reach it by stepping across the plate and diving, it's in the zone cracker! Not let's try this again. CLINES: MURTON: CLINES: Gawd almighty! You some kinda ginger kid? Swing at that! MURTON: You almost earholed me! CLINES: You need to change your panties now? Pull that bat back and tomahawk that ball! CLINES: MURTON: CLINES: That's my boy!
  24. ...with the suicide hotline? sorry, it was the first thing that popped into my head. Evil thoughts
