  1. They're usually the smart thing to do with a contract like this and a team that's under somewhat of a budget crunch. This is hardly unique to Hendry and is very common around MLB with most GM's. Plus. in his case, he's maximizing everything he can do and won't be here to see the ramifications of his work, in all likelihood. He's just putting the best(in his mind) on the roster, which in turn, will be someone else's mess to clean up, assuming the longterm deals that are backloaded inevitably don't work out. Still, like was just said, it's a common practice...... A common practice. And we'll have an average to below average 34-year-old outfielder making $6.5 million.
  2. Jon Lieber's 2001 was pretty good.
  3. Not bad, not great. I was hoping two years at the most. At least it's only $5 mil per.
  4. Saw this coming
  5. I'd be a bigger fan of Ellsbury if he wasn't an average-driven OBP guy. He's a good defender with great speed, but if he hits only .280, then his OBP is only gonna be .330, maybe. We could do better than a .330 OBP guy at the top of the order.
  6. I definitely wouldn't mind DeJesus, but I the Royals would probably ask for more than he's worth.
  7. I thought it would be fun to look this up on Bay's Baseball cube page: Jul 31, 2002 - Traded by Mets with Josh Reynolds and Bobby Jones to Padres for Jason Middlebrook and Steve Reed. Great trade
  8. Decent move for the Giants. He'll man third and allow Kung Fu Panda to play first base.
  9. Interesting. They have a good lineup now if everyone is healthy.
  10. I feel like he's just rehashing info we already have heard. It's nice to know JH is at least exploring the trade market.
  11. Yeah, he had one bad year on the club and two good ones. I guess the bad one left a sour taste. He's a decent reliever, nothing special but not horrible.
  12. Me too, but I'd imagine Calero could be had on a one-year deal worth maybe $2 mil. That's not bad, but then again, this is Jim Hendry.
  13. I'd be fine with Calero.
  14. Looks like the Yanks are now looking to deal two former Cubs
  15. I don't see anything wrong with that list. All good defenders. I'm pretty surprised they didn't include Jeter. Now that would've made it stupid. Someone with a brain and common sense must've created that poll.
  16. This is a meh trade for both teams. The Braves sold high on a guy clearly coming off his best year, but they didn't really get anything that will help. The Yankees are getting a guy who clearly pitches better in the NL then the AL. So again, a "meh" trade for both teams. But from the Yankees perspective, he's only going to be the No. 4 or 5 starter on their staff. So if his productions slips (which, yeah, it will) they also have Burnett, Sabathia, Petitte and Chamberlain/Hughes.
  17. Management overrates him and loves him. If they try to trade him, they'll ask for more than he's worth and no team will bite. And even if we do trade him for something realistic, that return won't be great. I'm fine with keeping him. We don't have any great in house options to replace him, and I'd personally rather keep Castro in the minors one more year, rather than rush him. He's barely played above A ball and people are calling for him to start on the big club. Let's let him start at AA next year, see what he can do there and at AAA and go from there. He's a special talent, I'd rather not rush him. And Theriot isn't horrible. He's not anything special but he can get the job done. Keep him for one more year and shift him to second next year or explore other options.
